Inexpensive beginner drone that is really quick, light (213g) GPS, 4K Camera with 20 minute flight time!
This is a pretty dandy little drone and flies fairly well. Quieter than I thought it would be and lot's of features for around $150. Wish there would be some type of Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) in lieu of a 3 axis gimbal, but it was a stretch, I know. I've had pretty good luck with the brand so far and crossing my fingers that it has some type of EIS.
-- I did have intermittent GPS issues and lost the FPV feed very early and it would not automatically reconnect. Hopefully my sample of one is not representative of a larger issue with the quality control with Holy Stone in general.

Thanks! I'm not ready for another drone yet, but this was pretty good for what it has, and the price range. Without the gimbal stabilization features it will not produce the best possible video, but then that's what video editors are for - cutting, and scrapping. Meanwhile the color was in fact pretty good! Thanks for good posts, all the time. I mainly look forward to you know as my FAA authority, but I try to watch everything you post. Take care!

I enjoy working with the FAA to try and get the ever changing rules figured out but it can be a bit depressing only doing rules, laws and regulations so flying different drones and trying out different tech reminds me to have fun too! I have the 175D and have given it a few good tests to date. It has performed incredibly well. There have been two times in questionable weather conditions that the GPS has dropped out but no problem, I simply flew the drone back and landed it without GPS. I have reached the stage where I trust the drones controllability and now would only wish for a slightly better camera. This want makes me look towards the Mini SE, however I see a continuous raft of complaints with the SE and Mini 2 concerning loss of control and connectivity.

Thank you for watching and the kind words! Glad the information is useful to you, I do enjoy trying new products to see what the industry has to offer and for the price Holy Stone has been a fairly decent performer of the manufacturers I've tried so far. This did work fairly well for the price though it did have some quirks so I'd just keep it in the open and away from the trees! I just received the newest release HS710 yesterday to review which advertises some upgrades and weighs 249g, so I'm looking forward to see what they've improved, but of course the price is a bit higher too... I'm also working on a couple new manufacturers that I'm so excited to share with you guys so fingers crossed you'll see these soon! Good Flying! 🙏

Of all my drones this was the first and so far, the only one that had a fly away. Lost it in a soybean field. Found it about a week later. After a tractor ran it over that is. The HS700E and HS600 are the most reliable Holy Stone drones. Haven't been flying my Holy Stone machines lately. Been using my DJI Mini 2, Autel Evo and my Parrot Anafi. Much less concerned about loosing control of these.

Indeed, not too bad for a smaller inexpensive drone. I've gotten spoiled with stabilized video (either a gimbal or EIS) becoming so common, even on FPVs, that it is still fun to fly but the video isn't really useful for much. Pictures turn out pretty decent though so maybe in a dicey area it would be a good choice in case a tree jumps in front of me... 😎

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Indeed, without some stabilization, video isn't the strong suit of this one but the pictures are pretty fair. I wasn't impressed with the signal strength, needs to be kept pretty close. In my testing only about 150m camera transmission, 400m for remote signal distance... It does depend a bit on the local geography so you could get better or worse than I did. Good Flying! 😎

10:18 Well the problem (for Holystone) is that there are drones with a 2- or 3-axis gimbal, and sometimes with EIS also, in this price range. I'm waiting for one under 250 gram with EIS that you can easily carry in your pocket without damaging the gimbal. Must say the camera on this HS175D is decent and no jello. And your review is not bad. But I would like to see the special features. I'm always interested in the follow-me function. So perhaps put all drones on the same test track to see how useful the video is?

  • @AlienDrones

    @AlienDrones

    2 жыл бұрын

Thanks for watching and the comments! Indeed I just walked in from testing a new drone and I did test the follow-me and orbit functions just to see if they worked, and they did a decent job. I asked in the video (future publication) for viewers to comment if they actually use these functions or if I'd be wasting their time to show them (I do the majority of my flights manually), so perfect timing! Agreed with the stabilization, the price range is in the area where some EIS would be reasonable, though I expect Holy Stone knows this or is finding that out. That will probably be the next _standard_ just like now GPS and 4k cameras are becoming fairly common. Good Flying!

@@AlienDrones Many people want a drone to film their activities. But nobody has build a follow-me drone yet as it could and should be. Imagine a bike or skateboard or whatever. You want a drone that sticks to you. The video doesn't have to be super stable 4k blah blah. Small, safe, prop guards, crash resistant, silent, audio signals to the controller to hear where, how far how high, it is flying, controller with GPS (like the Fimi A3 which is really accurate!), return-to-controller, compass follow-me mode ( so it stays in position relative to you like Fimi A3 or for example the L109 Pro), couple of other thing. Of course EIS. No gimbal that can break. And no you do not need obstacle avoidance sensors!!! In fact, rather not! Better people look where they are flying! Yes there si the Skydio 2. But it's too big and too expensive. Yes some DJI drones are ....reasonable with optical active-track. But a 150-200 special purpose follow-me drone? Nope. They could easily make one! Everything is already there on existing cheap drones. So you may not use follow-me yourself, but just look at how many are disappointed that the DJI MIni is crippled by not having either GPS follow-me or active track. How silly for a mini 'backpackers' drone!!

Analog controller with built-in screen and GPS. Unfortunately it's kinda intimidating for people around. Not exactly stealth. Anyhow, plenty people buy a drone for exactly that; To film themselves. If reviewers don't test the follow-me feature the review is not complete in my opinion. But I do like your presentation. Keep up the good work.

Kieth . . . I have a HS720e, what I would describe at the next step up from the HS175D. Could you do an evaluation of the APP? I find the Ophelia GO app to be buggy, buggy to the point I'm afraid to fly. There is no documentation available. Even if the drone itself is good, it's no better than the flyer interface. (As a side note, the HS720e I have now is a replacement. The first would fly great with just the controller but would not function when under Ophelia GO control.)

@@AlienDrones To the best of my knowledge, the Ophelia GO app is the current app intended for use with Holy Stone GPS drones and I assumed it was the app you were using in your review of the HS175D. Ophelia GO appears to have evolved from Ophelia GPS which appeared to have evolved from Bugs GO. There is an App Operation Guide for the Ophelia GPS app (HS700 drone). I have had my HS720e for roughly 60 days. Out of the box, the first drone flew great with the controller alone. With phone & app connected, the drone flew great until it was 20-30 yards away. At that point, it would just make a run for freedom in an expanding spiral climb until it attacked a tree. I had no control at all. There are a number of pilots that report the same drone behavior in the various forums. I repeated this process three times in different venues with the same result. Holy Stone sent me a replacement HS720e and it appears to be flying under full control. There are a couple drone features listed in the drone manual that I can't find in the Ophelia GO app. I did discover a form of flight log that I didn't know existed but found it purely by accident. I find it annoying that you can't explore the app without the drone and controller powered up and ready for flight. BTW, I really do enjoy your channel. PS: I believe the 720 and the 720e are the same drone except the 720e has an image stabilized 4K camera vs the 1080P non-stabilized camera in the base 720 model.

Beginner here (just got a Holy Stone HS175D). Curious, do you mainly fly the drone by looking at it directly (line of sight), or fly it by looking at the app on your phone, as if you're actually a pilot on the drone? I was wondering how pilots control the drone when it's far away / temporarily out of sight. I assume they just look at the app on their phones. Thanks

  • @AlienDrones

You should fly mainly with visual line of site with the drone, not looking at the display as it will give you better situational awareness and it this is the FAA rule as well. One time where it does make sense to watch the display a little more is when you are trying to get a specific cinematic shot as small adjustments in the controls will probably be needed to keep the camera where you want it. I purchased one of these. From the get go (out the box) it had "issues" with flight control. Pairing was hit and miss. Even once paired the unit would wantonly "unpair" itself and then go full on tonto flying at its own will. The "Go to home" function appeared to want to send the drone towards the International Space Station - then shut its motor off and land - well I say "land" - its more like pile itself into the ground at a million miles an hour. Drone sent back for full refund. I can't recommend the Holy Stone range - their customer support is rubbish and on my experience of their product its not far behind utter crap.

Fly aways are the worst. I did struggle with the GPS on this one as well, hoped it was only the one I had. You are very lucky that you were able to get them back after 3 fly aways. I just flew the newest HS360 though and it was the most stable ones I've flown from HS. Hopefully they have learned what the problem was and addressed it.

I got this drone and on 2nd day, when it is flying around 16mtrs height, suddenly, GPS mode is lost (I've been flying in the middle of the city) , a lil bit of gust came from the other side and the drone flew off without control and fell into the lake 500mtrs away. Auto return home function when out of range or 'return to home' button didn't work at all. I had a very shitty experience and NO DRONE NOW. I'd recommend not to buy these unreliable products. Better save up and get a DJI.

As mentioned in this video, I had GPS issues with this drone as well. DJI has fly aways too, but they are pretty good, for sure...

Is it a piece of crap? Yes, it's a cheap piece of crap just like most drones are in this price range. Save your money and buy a little bit better one like a DJI Mini 2.

That's why I bring these products for you guys to view, you can make your determination on something other than what is on the manufacturers web page. _Piece of crap_ might be a harsh opinion but of course it's yours to have based on your needs. I'm sure it may have value for some based on the features and cost, regardless it was fun to fly, but wasn't perfect for sure... It makes a different seeing someone honestly flying these products rather than a produced advertisement for sure. I believe it also helps manufacturers when the see comments and expectations and they don't align with the features of their product, hopefully they guide them in line with what the industry wants and we end up with better products in the end! Good Flying!

@@AlienDrones That's why I like to watch people like you make these types of videos that expose them for what they are to potential customers, to keep them from wasting their money purchasing drones of this caliber. Also, the same applies to the comments I make about how lousy they are made. There is one advertisement on the internet flaunting a several thousand dollar drone that a guy has left the company for making he has brought to market that is just as bad as the drone you are using before us here that is a huge lie.
