@@redadmiralofvalyria867 Yes, Franz II ditched the Holy Roman Empire as Napoleon came along but wanted to keep the title of Emperor so he renamed himself into Franz I, Emperor of Austria in 1805. He had to marry one of his daughters to Napoleon to achieve peace (that was the standard Habsburg procedure, they lost almost every war but marrying good was their specialty).

I like how he would have "believed" he was going to hell. After what he did to that nun he's getting a one way ticket

Was it The Saxon Marriage or God's Maidservant by Anna Chant? The first is about the youth and early reign of Otto the Great and his first wife Edith of Wessex and the second Otto's later life and marriage to Adelaide of Italy. I have a degree in medieval history and a particular interest in Carolingian and Ottonian history.The books were well written and from what I remember historically accurate allowing for odd artistic license. They remind me of the work of authors like Jean Plaidy or Anne O'Brien and provide a good a good fictional overview of the period.

What else would it be called? It was a title given out by the pope in Rome in direct continuation of the Roman Empire of old. The fact that the title was held by German kings wasn't anything special. It was generally assumed that it could shift around, being held by various peoples beforehand.

Otto III did not expanded Christianity to Poland. That happened in 966 through today's Czechia 30 before he became Holy Roman Emperor. Otto III put his emperors diadem on Boleslaw I the Brave's head at Congress of Gniezno in year 1000 symbolically crowning him the first king of Poland. He did it out of gratitude for retrieving body of Adalbert of Prague from Prussia.

Fun fact for everyone: the name holy Roman empire or sacrum Imperium Romanum was firstly used in the 12th century. Before it was called regnum francorum orientalium or east-frankish kingdom/empire.

Those were different entities actually. The HRE (first complete documented use of the phrase was in the 13th century) theoretically encompassed all of Western Christianity. By the later middle ages it was generally used for the areas the emperors controlled directly as kings (Germany (the former East Francia), Italy and Burgundy).

I love your history videos! May I add something? This "Holy Roman Empire" was called "Holy Roman Empire of German Nations" in Germany. And Cunigunde was pronounced with a K. The "modern" version of the name is spelled with a K and pronounced with a k in Germany. It is a well-known name to this day, but very old-fashioned. And nobody today would give their child this name, as the first syllable sounds like "Kuh" - the German word for cow.

it was sometimes officially called "...of the German Nation" starting in the 15th century. Under Ottonian rule that wasn't the case.

"This "Holy Roman Empire" was called "Holy Roman Empire of German Nations" in Germany." It actually wasn't. "of German nation" was just a phrase used during the16th and 17th century to refer to the German speaking areas. Sometimes it appeared right next to the emperor's title leading 19th century scholars to the misinterpretation that it actually was the full title of the empire.

@@Siegbert85 The HRE wasn't only called 'of the German nation' in several official documents, it was also colloquially referred to as Germany in english, Allemagne in french, Alemania in spanish and Deutschland in german. Just check some old maps or written sources. The term Germany could comprise the German speaking areas as well as the whole empire. It was actually so German despite its official universal claim that emperor candidates like later Charles V or french King Francis I tried to prove their 'Germanness'. It was so German that even the non-ethnical German but Bohemian kings were considered German princes as their role of electors was connected to German identity.

I'm arguing against the alleged official renaming into "Holy Roman Empire of German Nation" which didn't happen. As I said: at some time in the late 15th century the expression "of German nation"/"deutscher Nation" came into use und would be used quite often in various official documents, often in phrases like "our beloved fatherland of German nation" or "for the honor of the holy empire, Christianity and German nation". So, sometimes those two phrases would appear right next to each other, depending on the context. That doesn't make it the official title though which can easily be seen as the phrase dropped out of use during the 1700s while the actual official title "Sacrum Romanum Imperium" was always used in the signum of imperial diplomata. "It was so German that even the non-ethnical German but Bohemian kings were considered German princes as their role of electors was connected to German identity." Funny you should mention it, because the 13th century Sachsenspiegel specifically argues for taking the electoral role from the king of Bohemia precisely because he was not German. Later, with the Luxembourgs and Habsburgs they actually were though.

@@Siegbert85 I never stated that the addition "of the german nation" to the title would have been a continuing or even sole official title, but that it was used in official documents not just in some flowerish phrases but also explicitly as "hre of the german nation". it will be hard to distinguish between unofficial, semi-official or official...and it's pretty irrelevant. Well, the authors of the Sachsenspiegel obviously critcise a perspective, namely the role of the Bohemian as 'German' elector, which was not the common or exclusive one at that time. Scholar Len Scales deals exactly with this question in his book: 'The shaping of German identity' and takes the position that the Bohemian king was seen as a 'German elector'.

Curious to know if Andorra, San Marino and Monaco were ever part of the Holy Roman Empire? Other micronations are mentioned in the introduction, so just wondering if these three were ever part of the Empire or were soared for any other reasons.

The areas that later became Andorra and Monaco may have been part of the Frankish empire but when the later principalities were created they never part of the HRE not sure about San Marino though

San Marino is proud to be the oldest republic still in existence and without interruptions (since ca. 300 AD), it was never part of anything big but always had nice contracts to ensure its privileges. It is still not part of anything (not even EU), but has a monetary union with Italy for quite a long time, to make it a bit easier between them. And of course Italian is the official language. Otherwise, it has its own authorities, laws, everything. (Head of state are always two elected officials, election is every 6 months, it must be crazy with the roughly 30 thousand people living there.) It's nice though, especially the old city center on Monte Titano, well worth a daily trip if you are in the area for some time :D

Knowing that missionaries were sent to Poland by Otto II, it sure makes me proud to have German blood in my veins!

On the issue on where to begin the HRE I think Charlemagne would win the race simply because he was the one to start that specific tradition of Germanic kings being crowned Roman emperors by the pope. Otto I did nothing new in that regard. The "Roman Empire" those guys were supposedly emperors of was a theoretical construct arguably including all of Christianity but in essence the Catholic sphere of influence. All future German kings/emperors would count Charlemagne as their first. There wasn't even a discussion. Otto and his Saxon dynasty became more interesting during the 19th century because their power base was in Northern Germany, same as Prussia's was.

Typically it changes if a woman is in charge, as her children will always* be born of their father's dynasty *The only exception that immediately comes to mind is that when Queen Elizabeth II passes on the British Royal family will stay as the house of Windsor

The American newscasters have switched to “Keev”, but I heard a native speaker say it was more like “Kreev” with a hard roll on the “r” sound. Almost to rhyme with “grief”.

There were no 7 prince electors in the 10th century. That was a way later development. In Henry I's time there wasn't even an electoral procedure nor a monarchy to speak of. He basically had to convince the leaders of the various German tribes to accept him as a king in order to deal with the Magyar threat.
