As a personal aside, I genuinely try not to skew the conversation in favor of the children. Often, seeing my own parents' situation, I truly understand that they also face many internal struggles. I also feel that if I were in the same situation, I might not handle it any better than they did. All I can say is that everyone is facing their own battles.
The current ending is what I use when I don't know what to put.

Ah yes, the idea of some where they'd raise their child/children to be an investment for when they get older instead of actually raising them to be more independent

Perhaps the effort spent guilting your child into supporting you would be better spent by giving them a reason to care for you when they’re old enough to choose to stay or leave

Octavio once said that his parents were very supportive of him. They even listened to his streams to fall asleep and watched every single one of them.

Yeah there's this sad perception that parents raise and educate their children so they grow up to have better jobs and eventually pay them back. Some even (jokingly but still leaves a bad taste in my mouth) call it "investment".

You reminded me that sometimes parents project their own experiences-including successes, unfulfilled dreams, hopes, and regrets-onto their children. I believe it's okay to share personal experiences, both positive and negative, with children as examples. However, this can sometimes lead to parents confusing their experiences with their children's personal lives. Perhaps because parents do not want their children to have regrets like they did, or because they hope their children will follow similar paths, they ended up "investing" various hopes in their children. This is understandable because it's really difficult. Edit: I felt that I hadn't covered some parts adequately, so I rewrote it.

Yeah, this hits too hard since my parents expect me and my siblings to be always be able to support them through their poor financial decisions and act as a safety net when it inevitably goes to shit. It's also a common reason why the population is absurdly high in the PH. Many parents believe that their kids will be able to become successful and pull them out of poverty, so they keep breeding and breeding as a form of investment... Gratitude should be willingly offered, not demanded, otherwise it loses all its meaning. Thanks for the clip. Glad he got to talk about such a topic. Being raised as "emergency funds" is not a kind of fate I could wish on anyone, not even to my worst enemy www.

Also thank you for watching my clip and for leaving a comment 🫶 After reading, what comes to mind is that it seems every country is in one of two extreme states. One is viewing children as an investment and having a high birth rate, while the other is facing declining birth rates and an aging society. However, I'm not sure if this can be considered a problem; it feels like the development of the latter is precisely because of the former.

It's good to give back when you can but treating it like a transaction where you would be owed something back doesn't make sense. That's especially true in a parent and child context because the child didn't agree to enter into some kind of contract and a parent has greater obligation to their children than the child has to their parent.

Perhaps to some extent, parents should consider this standard and situation before deciding if they are ready to raise children.

I feel strongly about this. It's a good thing to give back to your givers, but it's suffocating if it hinders your life choices.

In worst case, it called Sandwich Generation. Where a child need to give some of their income for parents but also need to spend it for his/her own family and child. Utang na loob happen almost in all region in SEA. Cuz parents usually live under same house with their children even after they got married and have children, so the parents hoping that their child will take care of them when they're become grandma/grandpa
