Holmes 750 Split Boom Wrecker In Action

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, Shane and I were sent to recover a rolloff that had gotten stuck in someones front yard. We were told we didn't have a lot of room to work. We responded with our 1985 Freightliner with a Holmes 750 bed on it. AKA(The Gopher) We used the split boom to stabilize the drivers side, while we winched off the passenger side. Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching, don’t forget to LIKE, COMMENT, SUBSCRIBE, and SHARE this video!

Only one thing better than a Holmes 750.....that's two Holmes 750s...did a lot of work with an old 750 on the back of a 1976 KW back in the day! Now every job is a ROTATOR JOB!!

We still have an old 74 White cabover with an old Holmes split boom not sure what model but we use it on a regular basis to pull stuck farm tractors and equipment everyone around us run those huge tri axle rotator trucks and many of them won't touch stuck farm tractors and equipment because the are usually no place near a road or hard surface and they are afraid to go out in fields with their trucks. We take our old White out where others won't go, we also have and old 5 ton military tank recovery unit for when we get the old White stuck.

Im so glad you posted this video. I have been trying to find one of a 750 in action. I have a 1982 on a Ford L9000. We are cleaning it up and getting it ready for the road. I am originally from Atlanta and Spider Wrecker had a fleet of 750s. My dad always said they were the best. In about 1980, we bought 2 from the Navy in CA, they were on junk International chassis. We drove my 1979 GMC Astro out to get them, it was summer and there was no working AC. We never re-chassised them and I guess he sold them to an operator somewhere. fast forward 10 years and we bought one from the bankruptcy of Eastern Airlines, we re-chassied that one to a GMC Brigadier and ran it all over the southeast. Fast forward to today, at 60 I am on my third career in Aberdeen WA, putting together a heavy truck towing operation with an old 750. the adventure continues. Maybe I should post videos too.

Mr Hal this one reason why I like your channel so much better. The other wrecker channels all have painted chains that look like they’ve never been used, brand new straps and 3/4 million dollar rotators they are scared to get dirty...meanwhile your snatching them out with an old rusty Freightshaker and a piece of rusty floor grate and talking about the old days. If it keeps on raining down here y’all are gonna be mighty busy the next few weeks. Be safe and make that money!

Love watching an old rig still in use. That old 750 is stronger than some of the trucks today if you know how to rig them. My great grandfather had a dump truck from the 1800s. It had solid steel wheels with paddles, no tires. To dump the bed you had a handle crank. Two giant gears between the bed and the cab. You had to crank the handle to raise and lower the bed.

I split the booms and picked a full-size car out of a stone wall drain ditch it had flown into. I picked the car up on one side and the front of our small wrecker counter balancing the other side and drove away from the ditch without even a scratch. I really enjoy watching you and your crew you guys are the best and really down to earth crew I’ve found, God Bless you all and stay safe

What he’s calling a “landing mat” got its name from a WW2 invention, the Marston Mat, which were invented as a way to build landing strips for military aircraft on soft ground in a matter of hours instead of weeks. The originals were steel mats slightly narrower and twice as long as what’s shown here that were made to interlock to each other and were of a different construction, originals being made of solid steel sheets that had holes punched into them to save weight and aid in them settling on soft ground and ribs stamped in to add stability. Army units found in addition to being good for their intended purpose they also made great traction aids for wheeled vehicles on soft ground, you could lay them out in the nastiest of swampy mud or soft sand and drive trucks, trailers and jeeps right over them. After the war there was such a huge surplus Americans bought them and used them for everything from fencing to walkways to what you see these fellas doing with them. They were so popular the name “landing mat” stuck and is still used today to describe steel mats used for building roads and recovering vehicles over and on soft ground.

My old man had a bunch of 750s and 600s. I'm only 42 but grew up in businesses and I remember in early 2000s the old man sold a couple wreckers real quick and didn't have replacements but we still had the old 86 W900 with 750 on it and I ran that for a few months and did alot of shit with that old trk that just sat and sat for probly 10 yrs with minimal attention paid to her but when it came time to go, she fired and dragged whatever you wanted. Loaded log trks, loaded tri axles, tractor trailers and on and on. Just a little more work with bumpers and stuff but she did the job. Love to have another cuz I hated when the old man sold that old wrecker. Also like the brake pedal holder haha!! We always cut off a piece of pvc and jam in between bottom of dash but whatever works how bout it. Thanks for the post.

Another great job with the original rotarer. There were several in my part of the country in the 70s and 80s. Had a propane has truck sink in a gravel road 1 hook on the truck and other swung around tied 2 a tree wrecker was completely off the ground swinging like a hamick walked me right out. Loved the comments about your dad.Mine got a heck of a education some were when I was between 14 and 22 at that time I didn't think he knowed anything.

Roll off driver here. Here's a good trick to keep in the back of your mind when dealing with a stuck roll off. When the bed is raised, the end of the rails and the tail roller will hit the ground and lift the back of the truck. If you can find something to put on the ground as a base, you can jack up the back of the truck by raising the bed. You can change drive tires without a jack, or in this case, lift the drives out of the hole. When I get stuck I usually do that, and fill the hole in with lumber scraps or masonry scrap. As often as not, I just drive out.

Mr. Hal I'm glad you videoed this recovery so people can see the equipment that was the main front line wreckers of the old day's. Several company's still use the 750, 800 and the 1801 as their front line equipment. I still say the 750 was extremly under rated at only 25 Ton. People don't realize having a 750 is just money in the bank. Nice recovery guy's, be safe and always remember your safety is the most important factor on any tow or recovery.

We had a flipper toggle air valve on the back of my 750 Kenworth 1975 coe, it was a duel Function nutral, and air on top of the-spring to push harder on the spring cans slack adjusters s cams, you know if you needed the brakes locked , and the other position would free up the brakes , I use that function way more to move the truck in to position when hooked up with under reach Zack, it was mounted on the drivers side at the bottom of the back of the tow bed, below the two manual winch controls , I had to some times let my booms down to get them to lock back easier, oh yes it all pays the same , loll, nice job 👍 thanks BigAl California.
