The whole point is that - while it takes place in 1940s Hollywood - it has 0 reason to be. Straight gigolos not wanting to have gay sex, and gays wanting to have gay sex, are concepts that could easily take place anywhere in almost any setting. It’s a show meant to be woke BS for writers who hate writing in a timeline that has internet or cell phones to poke holes in their lame plots, and give their fellow gay friends in costume design a job.

@@MrFuggleGuggle To be fair, there are a lot of topics that are relevant at pretty much every point in history. I'm not watching the show, but if it aimed to describe the specific experience of being gay, or of being forced to be a prostitute in the 40's (which would be pretty different back then, especially the former), then I could see that being the reasoning for the use of the time period. No clue if it actually focuses on that, though.
I'm 110% convinced that the only reason "Hollywood" was made was so that Nick could say, without irony, that "it's just gay sex".

The problem with period films(especially set in the 40s and 50s) is that everything looks too polished and clean. Everyone is wearing the same clothes the year it's set in (which they wouldn't have been) and all drive the same car the year it was produced(which hardly anyone could afford at the time).
@memzyreloaded8761

That's because they're all made by "I was born in the wrong generation" people. People who have never stayed in a bad place long enough to view it as no more than an exotic location. Their vacation outlook expands across time, where they want to see everything without dealing with the gritty shit.

Back to the Future did the period thing better, take Biff’s car for example he drove a 1946 Ford Coupe in 1955, the Delorean was from 1981, the only new contemporary vehicle was the 1986 (by October 1985, the next year’s model would’ve been out) Toyota 4x4.
The theater kid thing is spot on. One of the biggest problems with all these dime a dozen Netflix shows
