Why are the G chords using 2,3,4 rather than 1, 2, 3? I try to avoid the use of the pinky with beginners (especially since many are only 11-12 years old).

I think I did it that way just because that's the graphic i had on hand. I almost recommend 1, 2, 3 and generally use that in my newer charts. There might be an argument that switching from G to C is easier? But yeah I agree with you on this, especially with younger students.
