In this video, I'll be reading and reacting to different negative reviews I've found of my favorite game, Hollow Knight. The question is... who will be saltier: me, the fan reading the reviews, or the reviewers after they get stuck and ragequit out of Forgotten Crossroads?
This time, the reviews are from Steam and thus aren't using the star rating system, but I'm rating them 0 stars because they mostly make no sense.

I spent my first 2 hours of play walking around forgotten crossroads, having somehow missed false knight, quit the game and told the friend who recommended it that it was bad since there was only 1 accessible area. I mean funny as that is, I actually do feel like that. I probably have 200h on elden ring between like 5 characters and am now starting to hate it. The first run was brilliant and there's content everywhere. Then second run was brilliant and I read up on guides and scooped up everything important I missed. After that it felt like most things aren't really worth scoping up in the first place and enemies are almost never worth fighting, so I just end up running around for like 10 minutes at a time. Also bosses were never truly satisfying looking back. Either I had summon/range/op damage/high stagger and steamrolled them, or I traded hits and somehow won, or spent most of my time running away. In the last case it never felt like the sort of dance with the boss people like to describe either but rather that I ran away while the boss did his 15 hit combo, ran in for 1-2 hits, then ran away again. Some bosses in sekiro or hollow knight gave me that "what a fight, would like to do it again right now!" feeling. Never got that in eldenring; always either generic dumb fun or relief that it's over. Not saying hollow knight is such a game, but there are legit reasons to start hating a game after a while.

Yeah, like, personally I just wanted to find every nook and cranny in the Kingdom. Whenever I got a new ability, I backtracked to old areas where I knew I could use it to get places. The desire of filling out the entire map was good enough to keep me going, even when I got the locations of the Dreamers I just wanted to try and find everything else too. Hell, the only reason I did the Hollow Knight ending before going to the White Palace was because I was told the first ending would be locked if I got too far into the game, not because I was done playing it. Even if there was "nothing else", I wanted to see all of it. By contrast, a friend of mine told me back then he had started the game a while ago but never got back into it. He showed me the parts of the map he had uncovered and I could almost see the straight line from Dirthmouth to the City of Tears. Both me and another friend joked, independently, that he was trying to speedrun it. He also mentioned how he had no idea where to go next, lol. Everywhere, obviously you should go everywhere! He eventually kept playing and beat it though, and unlike these guys he doesn't think it's a bad game at all. But it honestly amazes me how some people lack this curiosity, maybe because it's such a natural thing to me. xD

Yeah most players pick up on this, which is probably why the game is correctly considered good. Most stream VODs I've watched have people getting disappointed when Elderbug no longer subtly guides the player halfway through the game. What they don't know is that Elderbug has a character arc and requires a fragile flower to self-actualize. I'm pretty sure that the only characters without an actual or implied character arc are Little Fool, Relic Seeker Lemm, Willoh, Confessor Jiji, Gorb, Bardoon, and Charm Lover Salubra, but they all have such dynamic and compelling characterization.

Honestly, these reviews make me laugh. I was *definitely* one of those people who died a hundred times in Forgotten Crossroads because I couldn’t jump from platform to platform and kept falling into spikes. But I knew that this game is actually fantastic at teaching you how to play itself, so I refused to progress to Greenpath until I have finished everything I could in the first area. So I spent, like, an hour beating my head against that Husk Guard trying to save the grub because I knew it was possible, I just had an enormous disadvantage because I’ve never played video games due to a lack of personal computer. And now? I’ve done everything except the Pantheons. And I almost finished P4 on my first try. Got about halfway through Pure Vessel. But once I get used to it, it shouldn’t be a problem. So when I hear complaints about it being “too hard”, it’s just... wow, people. Learn to judge your own abilities first, *then* judge the game.

I love how people see difficult gameplay and environmental storytelling and immediately go "oh, so it's just like dark souls". Yet they don't consider the other factors, like the fact that the two games are entirely different genres: Action - RPG vs 2d sidescroller/metroidvania. It's a game that fans of the souls series are likely to enjoy, that does not mean it is a soulslike. Edit: I also bet the guy that said he beat all the souls games didn't beat them with his own skill, but was carried by 3 overlevelled phantoms and then thought he was skilled.

  • @Zynet_Eseled

    @Zynet_Eseled

I'd say that dark souls style environmental storytelling could be considered valid depending on how it's done. Particularly through things like item descriptions, key pieces of character design, effects of actions and an unwavering commitment to mindfuckery and headache inducing theory crafting. But does that therefore have a soulslike made? No. It just means it takes cues from the souls style of environmental storytelling. A true souls like would be an over the shoulder game, with a stamina, mana and health bar, with long attack windup animations, a location to stop at to rest, which respawns enemies, dropping ALL your experience/currency upon death, and an atmosphere of absolute oppression. This isnt that. At most it has cryptic storytelling, and a potentially oppressive atmosphere. That's it. Not the core traits of the style 1 to 1.

One minor gripe I have with the game is that the Wayward Compass is an excellent quality of life charm to have on a first playthrough, but the combat is already pretty hard for new players when they're actually using all their charm slots for things that help them in combat. Setting aside the memes, it's basically useless for experienced players, so I really don't think its effect needs to have an associated charm notch cost. Having to constantly switch it on and off every time I encountered a boss I couldn't beat first try was kind of annoying, and so was trying to navigate the map without it while I was still learning the layout, particularly in areas like City of Tears and Deepnest. Obviously, though, it's not something that I would consider a dealbreaker in any way.

And while I do agree it does sound like it’s referring to the dream bosses/warriors, there’s some confusing parts. First of all, like you said they were playing for 7 hours. While it’s possible to get to resting grounds in that time through intended means, how do you get stuck thinking essence is your only option? Clearly you have more things to explore, especially with the map telling you about the dreamers. Secondly, the reviewer listed frustration that the devs "patched" the "tougher enemies" from respawning even when transitioning between rooms. Why would anyone think any dream warriors/bosses respawn?

I think the core message of this somewhat oddly worded statement, is the following: "The game does not really guide you by giving you directions, therefore It's easy to get lost." This statement wouldn't be incorrect, and would avoid the weird paradoxical language that they actually used. I still don't think it's good criticism. The game gives you a map, gives you plenty of hints that there is a map-maker that you can pay for a map, gives you items to update said map, and has a charm that pinpoints your position, making getting lost a non-issue from then on. Sure, it may take a while for the player to figure those things out. But a few strolls in and out of dirtmouth solves that immediately. And it's not like it isn't obvious that there are shops opening up there... The only remaining issue, is exploring an area in which you haven't found the map-maker yet. To be fair, there are a few areas like that, that can be a bit confusing first time around, with how similar the backgrounds can be for some areas. But that's the whole point of a metroidvania anyway, to explore and figure things out on your own.

Oh boy. To be fair, I had REALLY mixed feelings throughout my first playthrough. I remember posting on reddit how the game had 'held me hostage' for several weeks: I was too invested to quit, but I was having a Bad Time during most of the bossfights. It started with me needing 30min to beat Hornet in Greenpath and ended with me finally getting 112%... 150 hours in. Several bossfights took me 2-4 hours to clear. It was pretty miserable at times. Especially since I've prided myself in being Good At Games and this one was stonewalling me hard, emphasising the opposite. That said, I've been enjoying the subsequent playthroughs a lot more. There's a special kind of joy in getting 112% in 8 hours when it used to take you 150. And since I no longer feel like I'm bad at the game, I'm enjoying it a lot more. Somewhere along the way, I gained the patience to suck it up and enjoy being stuck on a boss for several hours. Definitely has come in handy during my HOG grinding... Zote's smug ass took 3 hours to radiant clear. Knowing now that the bosses are meant to be hard, it's easier to rejoice when I clear a hard challenge in less time than I had expected. Absrad ascended clear still eludes me. Help. I've already spent 15 hours on it in total, tho I must've lost a lot of my muscle memory whenever I take a couple month break from grinding her battle and do speedruns / challenges instead

I was fine for most of the game and breezing past every boss in five tries or less, until failed champion, soul tyrant and especially NKG just kind of hit me in the face. Afterwards, when I hit another brick wall at pantheon 3, I learned from my past experiences and took a break by doing a second playthrought. When I came back, I did it like three tries. I continued to apply this method for every challenge afterwards, althought sometimes I waited too long before doing so; ascended absolute radiance was the worst case, where I spent like 15 hours grinding across like a week, before finally recognizing that it was a terrible idea to frustrate myself like that, and that it would certainly not improve my already shaky mental health at the time lol. Still, in the end, I got every single journal entry in the game with far less frustration and rage than it would have costed me if I played the game a couple years ago when I was even worse at controlling my impulses. And now, I only have the all bindings at the same time challenge remaining for pantheon 3, 4 and 5. I don't plan to tackle this ever, but who knows, maybe in a couple years I'll suddendly think this is a great idea. For the moment, however, I'm happy just occasionnally doing a randomizer playthrought of this game, which often gives me the occasion to challenge myself in unexpected and wacky ways. For example, I recently did ascended Hornet 2 with the old nail, vengeful spirit and only one side of the dash. That took forever, despite the fact that I only died three times.

I know the point of these is to dunk on people who find the game "too hard," but I'd like to gently push back on a specific point of Review #9. We all know Hollow Knight's aesthetic is fantastic, but due to the lack of contrast between backgrounds and platforms in some areas (Greenpath and City of Tears come to mind), it can indeed be difficult to tell the difference, particularly for players with low vision or other disabilities. It's an accessibility problem and that doesn't make it the game's fault, but as somebody that's legally blind and a fan of your content, I hope you're willing to be considerate and not immediately chalk it up to simple ineptitude. That only hurts players with physical barriers and contributes to the idea that gaming isn't for everyone.

I think it's not worth not recommending a game over, but the real issue at hand here is content communication which is something art always struggles with. Think trigger warnings for literature, it's hard to know how far things can extend and count as triggers. The list gets crazy. A game like hollow knight has bright lights, requires decent execution and reflex and more on top of the occasional background detail that can be confused. None of this is explicitedly communicated but these are all things that may prevent someone from beating the game. The largest amount of people are filtered by the skill requirement (ignoring the motivation to play at all), so people often take that as default response to seeing someone complain.

I will say, for that one long one that wasn't read in the video, I do kind of get their point--namely in regards to the mushrooms. Fungal Waste is my very least favorite area in the game simply because of how long it took for me to figure out that you had to downslash the mushrooms in order to progress--I also was under the impression that you needed some other movement ability to use them. I do wish that there was some clue or hint that indicated what you were supposed to do with the mushrooms. (That said, it was not SO annoying that I felt the need to write an entire wall of text about it.) As for their other gripes with the game, I feel like that is very much more an issue with their own memory and not having the patience for a game with as much going on as Hollow Knight. there are not a lot of "links in the chain" as it were--and even many of the ones that exist are optional if you're clever enough with it (such as wings). I feel like most of their gripes are legitimate misunderstandings of how the game is supposed to work.

I mean tbf, most of the time when you see a new thing the devs expect your first instinct to be to hit it. It's your main way to interact with the enviroment. Upon hitting them you can see you get knocked back, it then follows that hitting down would knock you back (up). I wouldn't say it's an issue really but I can see how someone would miss it

@@JakeFish5058 You're right. I think the real issue with the mushrooms is getting to learn how to use them properly, which requires learning proper timing, learning not to spam the downwards slash, and just going for it, learning as you play. It took me a little while to get it under control but now it's like second nature. The mushrooms really are just an obstacle you get past through skill, patience and experience. Nothing more to it. And afterwards you'll hit yourself for how long it took you to learn it.

Honestly, I think a great way to tutorialize that would be another hornet appearance. You see her in a room but she runs off to the side and down slashes a mushroom, sending her into the air some and off screen. I was also stuck in fungal wastes for a while trying to find a new ability, and when I figured it out it was less of an "Oh!" moment and more of an "oh.". I really enjoy interacting with negative takes on things I like cause of this, it helps you see little things that remind you nothing is entirely perfect.

It’s fair to call it an oversight when it’s technically the first time the game *requires* the player to nail bounce as a movement mechanic to progress. It’s really not a game breaker, but could easily be solved by making a small area impossible to leave without using the bounce mushrooms. For example they could remove the ability to simply jump out of the room cornifer is in, so when you drop down you have to bounce out either way. It really shouldn’t be hard from there to figure out what to do with some very basic thinking.

I love these review of reviews videos! I'm not super experienced with video games, but HK was recommended to me last year and I gave it a go. Super intriguing that people find backtracking exploration (i.e. when you gain new movement ability and can enter new sections of old maps) to be tedious. I thought it was one of the best parts! I always got giddy when I realized that I could go back to the places I'd marked and explore them anew. Lots of these reviewers seem to desire instant gratification, but at least for me, HK's relative lack of guidance actually makes finding upgrades/bosses/new sections super rewarding.

This is really sad to me, to see that most of these bad reviews are from people who have so much time in the game that the bad review doesn't seem to make sense, or from people with less than 10 hours in the game, who have a complete lack of understanding of the game's fundamentals. "Farming essence" "pay for fast travel." I'm not sure what led people to these misunderstandings, but it's sad to see. The feature that led me, and thousands of others to love the game so much was the sense of exploration and constantly feeling lost, only to wander into a place where you can finally feel relief, and get your bearings once more. This very feature brought about so many misunderstandings, and led people to drop the game without ever being able to experience the true Hollow Knight.
