Because the more players that get involved in a confrontation, even as "peacemakers," the more likely the officials decide to send a few to the showers. 1 or 2 teammates of 1 player trying to settle things down may be tolerated, but having 3 or 4 players from both teams getting into the fray exponentially increases the chances of the officials handing out multiple technicals & ejections.

Ii think Hollingshed should probably been tossed, because she initiated and would not stop (she even fouled Hull) and then the two Colorado players rushing on Brink was also a problem. Brink shouldn’t have retaliated, but what was her other option, especially when the other two players rushed her, it could have ended much worse. Hollingshed should have been tossed and perhaps have been banned from the next game. This was a physical attack to the face/head of another player. Brink did nothing to deserve such an attack. @@rkylebritt They don't measure how egregious the incidents are. The fact is they both did something. A personal foul is a basketball play. It's something that happens during the play. Any action taken place after the whistle has been blown will be at least a technical foul. Throwing the basketball at someone is not a basketball play neither is a shove in the face. That's why it's a double tech. To think otherwise is someone that doesn't know much about basketball. They took a stand by following the NCAA rule book.

@@e-man5654 You’re right on the distinction between PF, TF, and F1/2. I misspoke on that. I know plenty about basketball. Played for 20 years, been coaching for 15. Officials can and HAVE used the egregiousness of an action to assess the level of penalty. Let me rephrase to a more accurate penalty: yes, they are both “technical fouls.” The shove to the face should’ve received a double technical and ejection while the retaliation should’ve been assessed with a single technical foul. I’ve had players of mine in similar situations. Had a player (against me) fall to the ground in a scrum for the ball. One of my players grabbed his ankle and twisted it (quite intentionally, we have it on video and had to submit it for review from our conference). When this happened, the opposing player kind of kicked to get my player off. Our opponent (the “kicker”) was assessed a single technical for the kick and the “twister” (my guy) was assessed a double tech and ejection. The officials were right on top of it and explained why the fouls were similar, but different. We shot 2 technical free throws for the kick, they shot 4 for the double tech. Was it “by the book”? Guess not. Was it the right thing in my eyes? You bet. My player also sat a few games after this.

ALso I think Hollinshed pulled out a shank from her shorts and was about to stick Brink in her ribs, possibly causing substantial injury and even death. I therefore think Brink was TOTALLY justified in throwing the basketball at Hollinshed - a basketball never seriously harmed anyone - while defending herself against serious harm and even possible loss of life. I think most people - not just players, but human beings - would react similarly to someone else trying to possible end their life. It's a natural defense mechanism - the self-preservation of life.
