Holland Baroque - Hildegard von Bingen/ Karitas Antphon

Музыка

Holland Baroque performs Karitas Antphon (Coupure), composed by Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179).
Dorothee Mields - soprano, Marco Ambrosini - nyckelharpa, Tineke Steenbrink - haprsichord/ organ, Judith Steenbrink - violin, Filip Rekieć - violin, Lambert Colson - cornetto, Adam Woolf - trombone, Tomasz Pokrzywinski - cello, Michał Bąk - double bass, Christoph Sommer - theorbe, Emma Huijsser - harp, Matteo Rabolini - percussion.
Holland baroque loves to share the stage with free spirits in order to create a paradise for curious people.
The Italian Marco Ambrosini is such a curious person. He plays the ‘nyckelharpa’, a Swedish instrument with keys and strings which is mostly used in folk music. This versatile performer, with his feathery sound and picturesque improvisations, is the perfect musical dancing partner to the enchanting star soprano Dorothee Mields.

This is incredible. Does any one know, where the nuns of that time vocally proficient to sing these hymns? It’s mind blowing how technically intricate her compositions were.

It is interesting to watch an ensemble which otherwise would perform in the historically informed way playing a medieval tune so totally ahistorically.

Karitas Habundant In Omnia is the name of the original composition, and it’s about 900 years old. The lyrics are widely available if you’re interested, it’s just Latin stuff about God’s love and such. It’s mostly sung as a hymn in church.

The composition itself is from the 1100s, so more Medieval. They’re also using some instruments popularized during the Renaissance so “Baroque” is maybe less apt. But most of what that group plays is more Baroque and Classical.
