My late father used to use surgical instruments to hold parts for painting. I still have his collection. He bought them at O Gauge model train shows. They are high quality and have a ratchet device to keep them gripping.

Paint 'em all on the sprue - only have to touch up a few spots instead of just snipping and throwing the sprues out. Also can use the old sprues for detailing & streching over a flame for wires, cables etc. Love your channel.

Great tips for beginners on holding your bits. I promise I won’t go where my train of thought was taking me when I saw the title of this video, lol, family channel and all. I love those alligator clamps, I also have some hemostats of various sizes, straight and curved I use also. Cheers and take care and oh not to mention old paint brush handles that have lost there usefulness as brushes.

Great video Nigel. I picked up quite a few tips here, nicely grouped together. Kentucky Fried Chicken corn sticks? All we get here is fluorescent green coleslaw.

Hi Nigel, I started modelling back in the 60's & 70's in Australia and have come back to modelling in retirement last year. It has been a huge learning curve, in the old days painting was brush and Humbrol enamel, teaching myself air brushing with Vallejo Acrylic has proven a big hurdle, not mention expensive in initial outlay. I use the bamboo kebab sticks and the inside/outside clamps on sticks and find the styrene packing from appliance packaging fantastic for holding the sticks, I have lots of pieces in various shapes and sizes and the sticks easily push into the styrene. I am enjoying your posts, nothing beats experience. Trust me I've found some absolute drongos doing modelling channels, keep up the good work mate.

Excellent idea for a video, sensible tips indeed for all of us. Whilst we have probably evolved our preferred methods over the years, it never does any harm to consider other suggestions 👍

Hi Nigel, Nice video, lots of useful tips in this one. Before I ever remove a part from the sprue, I am thinking about weather it's going to be part of a sub assembly that will be painted as a unit, or if I need to paint the parts individually and just how it needs to be held. Preplanning is the key for sure. Have a great day. Jeff

Nice one Nigel! What about a video on ideas for clamping stuff down when bonding items with difficult shapes! I am really getting problems with the Trumpeter Titanic stern curves!!!!

Though some of the clips and pointy rods are a little pricey but often help when the free options just don't work. The balsa and pin tip though is great, can see that being occasionally useful when blutack isn't appropriate.

Or if you can't get the balsa, try a bit of expanded polystyrene packaging.

Found your channel last night, I'm really enjoying it and learning a lot. I know you covered creating wood effects in one of your WW1 ambulance videos but I wonder could you make a specific tutorial video for how to do the different types of wood effects because I found that really helpful and probably the best version of wood effect I've seen and it'd be nice if it was it's own video so that I could save it then find it easily and follow it whenever I need to create some wood effects (most of my models are ww1 so a lot of wood to be done).

Hi. I have made many videos with the wood effect. The latest is the K2 Ambulance, The Yamato and Bismarck Turrets, the Lancaster bomber tables and also a video on painting ship decks.

Nice tips there Nigel, I would like to know how you hold completed models while applying clear coat? You aircraft for example, do you do the top and hold underneath then a few days later clear coat underneath? Sorry for the newbie question :)

As you say Peter, what ever it is, I coat one side and then the other, but normally in a few hours rather than a few days.
