Holding Hands During the Our Father

Ойын-сауық

Are you supposed to hold hands in Mass during the Our Father? Fr. George Elliott explains how this practice started in the protestant churches and came about with Catholics. For protestants, it is a way to express their union as a community. As Catholics, we do not have to hold hands because we have the source of our communion right in front of us.
Watch for some practicals on what to do during the Our Father!

I was away from mass for so long, when I came back I was shocked at how it turned into some weird protestant or charismatic service. People were actually gathering into a circle in the pews to say the our father. I stayed in the back. Thank God covid fixed all that, no one does that at my church anymore. Now if they could just keep their hands down 😂

Just like the priest facing the laity, getting rid of the communion rail, receiving the Eucharist in the hand, getting rid of Latin, holding hands during the Our Father was never approved with Vatican II.

I grew up on the East Coast and moved to the West in the 1980's where the hand holding was just getting started. I was never comfortable with it. But no matter what we said, no priest - ever - would say anything to stop it. They didn't want to get involved, since it didn't affect them on the altar. Now of course Covid has ended it, but I still wonder why priests would never - ever - speak their mind on this topic.

I’m about to tell my group that I will not be holding hands for prayer next time, I think it makes people feel awkward especially when there’s a couple in there, I will give whoever my fists next time. Let’s realize that simple gestures as these will cause people to flee, which is a reality.

After all the logical explanation by the priest on the principle of why holding hand during the Our Father is not appropriate, the community still does not hear it. Theologically the sign of unity is the Eucharist itself, we don't need any more symbolism, all eyes should focus on the Lord. Liturgically, for the sake of the Unity in worship, we should do what everywhere in the world people do, i.e., no holding hands. Practically, health-wise, it is a good idea not to hold hands with stranger.

Our immediate family do hold hands during the Our Father as a sign of our unity as a family to God. It is a comforting and uplifting sign of devotion and worship and affirmation of our faith as we pray the LORD’s Prayer together. It is not a distraction from the prayer, nor does it take away any significance.

There is no wrong way to worship The Lord. Holding the hands is not wrong and is meant for the family that’s there together and if you look at how early Christians pray they used to open their arms like a cross to show there love while praying.

Why are you not declaring that Jesus is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament? The Faithful have been confused because it was Priests who permitted and encouraged the holding of hands during the Our Father. No laity ever just started doing it with their hands, they were instructed to do it. As for your declaration of the reality of physical awkwardness, quite pathetic, it’s the exact same as offering the sign of peace. True Catechises is required, starting with the clergy! The whole New Mass was an attempt to placate Protestants. Pope Benedict, Declared the validity of the Tridentine Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo Mass, as both being equal and valid. Pope Francis has effectively banned the Traditional Latin Mass, instead preferring One World Order and One World Religion, not Catholic in any way. Please explain that if you can?

After, all due respect, the communities I've been in for 50 years have held hands, until COVID-19 as a beautiful & love sign of brother/sisterhood. Please don't say " we as Catholics don't hold hands:" that may e true in your practice but there is no Canon forbidding it.

  • @larrymelman

There is no canon forbidding you from flapping your arms and quacking like a duck either. I have heard it said that the Roman Missal lists what we are supposed to do, and we are not supposed to do anything more. I don't object to families who hold hands, but I always found it creepy that a total stranger would reach down and grab my hand when I clearly wasn't interested. (But actually talk to me after mass? Don't be silly.) As I said above, I always found it odd that priests refuse to make announcments about this. Some will tell you one-on-one that they don't like it, for exactly the reason given in this video, but nothing more.

@@larrymelman I can appreciate your feelings & point of view, but that's you. Strangers reaching out when I'm in a worship space, is as it should be & was when Jesus reached out to the stranger, the marginalized, tax collectors, whores, sinners, the infirmed, all of whom are our brothers & sisters. I'm good with it, cuz Jesus was good with it. When in doubt, I've got my trusty hand sanitizer in my bag. Don't get so hung up on what is written in the norms. Remember, those were usually written for other ages & times. If you don't want to hold hands, you don't have to; fold your hand reverently-that sends the message. God bless you, friend. 😇

@@patvonfeldt3826 The whole mass is a prayer. The whole order of the mass has merit and is biblical. Their are liturgical abuses and some come from the parishioners themselves. My many years of being a Catholic the Oran’s Prans nor holding hands is not in the rubrics for parishioners of the Catholic Church. The whole mass is to show reverence toward God. It’s never, never about how “we”want to worship. Your mocking the priest if your holding up your hands in the Oran’s Prans part. This is his duty not ours. The holding of hands during the Our Father is not for us to show worship either. Again, reverence isn’t about centering how we want to reverence God it’s how we should.

I don't think really honestly. God would care if we held hands or we didn't hold hands. So this is an opinion of human beings, not of God. So I would say to people who do whatever makes you feel comfortable and don't listen to what the pope has to say because he is not infallible

I would feel comfortable wearing pajamas to mass and laying down on the pew with my head on a pillow and my eyes closed. Yes, most of the mass is pretty much the opinion of human beings (i.e. the Church) and should be uniform throughout the world (definition of "catholic"). In 95% of the Catholic churches I have been to mass in (I travel for a living), they do not hold hands.
