    Love the spirit of this video. Question everything! I'd also be curious if there's a behavioral or cognitive measure which may serve to work in conjunction with the EEG results. Something like response time or a simple cognitive assay that would provide an ability to comment on if the wakefulness from the light actually translates into something meaningful or if it's just your brain responding to the light in a reflexive way without downstream effects like improved attention and so on.     Honestly he tends to do theoretical science more than proven science, but I prefer that because there's a lot of interesting things that may or may not be true, but he may be onto something with it. For example, staring at a far distance actually helps with overthinking and it's a valid point that looking close distance at your phone causes anxiety

    @@CodyRallMD I wonder what your thoughts are for best tools for a recovery lounge. I am currently using the Neorhythm while clients are getting a normatec compression session. My idea is to track clients from sessions to session. They come in, I test what state of frequency they are in and then add a Neorhythm to being the brain back into focus. I am thinking of introducing this to corporates in a wellness session but would like to know your opinion on which devices you recommend for this.

    Hi Cody. I would prefer to see this interview. It's interesting how vulnerable while being central to homeostasis the hypothalamus is. I had a forensic anatomy TA who would touch his soft palate with his tongue so he could run to class and sweat less giving a few minutes more of lab time. If you like meditation as a tool consider sometime air flow and temperature on the hypothalamus and not just light. Simple things aren't so obvious always. I am interested in the lights for lucid dreams. I was in the military as well but as a helicopter guy, then medical now research and maths. Good to see that. Be well.

    Really cool to see you put the protocol to practise and share the result - Thanks! The Click bait title is a bit lame though, and although the KZread algorithm favours it, I really don't think such a video needed it - Making it sound implicitly like Huberman needed to be help accountable for some wrong doing... Personally I feel automatically put off channels that use click bait points - So much of the time it overshadows the good work people do to me. All the best Cody.

    Doesn't Huberman always harp on the importance of using outside light? May be an interesting future video to see what the difference between artificial light and sunlight is on yourself.

    Good point Anthony. I did ask Dr. Zietzer about using the SAD light for this experiment and he said it would be okay.

    All cells with mitochondria likely have the capacity to produce melatonin. Some studies in melatonin research suggest that this production stops immediately when the body / mind are exposed to light. Most melatonin is produced in our cells, and only 5% is produced by our pineal gland. As we age, this production of melatonin in cells decreases. i’m just trying to suggest a correlation.

    Would’ve liked to see you use natural light as it is multiple times more lumens, and what Huberman constantly states.

    Interesting John. Yes, but the natural light would have been more difficult to control. AND I did ask Dr. Zietzer about that and he said that the seasonal affective disorder light should have the same wavelengths and similar effect.

    I don't remember him saying you needed to look up into a light source...he just said to look up.

    You need more subjects to get credible experiments and most trusted results... single data points in one single individual does not say a lot.

    I'm broke but I'm on the verge of splurging and getting a muse in order to quantitatively work on my meditations. Ideally I'd like to work with an integration of quest3 +muse. I'm not sure if it exists but I'd like to have an BWE device that integrated with a EEG so as to it responding to your real time brainwaves to a target level , instead of just playing a canned set of tones light flashes. I don't see that ability in any product nor do I see that being affordable. So I'm looking for a binaural beat generator that can quickly easily be fine tuned on the fly manually while using the mind monitor app

    were you trying to prove that looking up into light would make you feel more awake or being exposed to light would make you feel more awake? Why not also have a case where you did not look up into the light, but just had the eyes open with the light source in the background and one where you looked up with no light just to make sure the effect you were seeing were not from the action of looking up alone. It is no surprise light energizes you. If you are in the dark it is usually easy to get sleepy, unless you have a lot in your mind.

    When I first got onto Huberman I loved his content but the more I watched his videos I became uninterested...I'm more into meditation practices and Huberman doesn't seem to be very knowledgeable in that area...to his credit he admitted that...

    I just want to say thanks for calling Huberman out. I started off as a massive fan of Andrew but gradually realized that while there is a lot of good content, there is also an incredible amount of speculation and cherry picking. I think of him more like a decent hypothesis generator of rather than a truth teller.

    Overall I think he does a great job. I can understand how a little showmanship goes into making scientific data interesting. It is important to dig deeper and not accept things as dogma from thought leaders though. Myself included. Thanks for watching Haemp!

    ​@@CodyRallMD It's more than just "showmanship" when you have an audience of a million people you have to be a bit more nuanced. What he often does is identify a real biological mechanism and extrapolates it way beyond any scientifically validated conclusion. I'd be fine if he'd then add some nuance around the counter evidence but he very rarely does. One example out of many is his scaremongering around Melatonin where he extrapolates from its role in puberty suppression and then warns his audience without even hinting to wider literature and how it directly contradicts his claims. I do agree he is better than 95% of other health influencers though. Love your channel, keep up the great work!

    Huberman its a guy who saved peoples life’s. Can you say that about yourself? Just because it didn’t work for some it doesn’t mean it didn’t work for many.

    @@natashat6541 I’d not heard of him saving lives. I enjoy listening to him in small doses but find he exaggerates his claims. Also, he’s said many things I simply disagree with. Even if he has saved lives, it doesn’t excuse him from misrepresenting findings or not doing his due diligence to understand something before he presents it.

    Sorry to put it bluntly, but it would really help your credibility if you didn't sport print t-shirts and the hairdo of a cartoon character, spoke with the tenor of an adult and professional instead of the phrenetic nasal tone of a kid, and tried first acknowledging the weight of the individual and institution in question, then replicating and testing the experiment that led to this conclusion as a point of departure, instead of the gratuitous and somewhat petty questioning of his entertainment value and the number of his youtube channel membership, then improvising and reinventing the wheel in a home experiment. (I mean, you were testing this in your bathroom at home?! How would this produce "conclusive results.") Dr. Huberman has Pew and McKnight awards for his work in this specialty area at Stanford, so it is not like testing a sixth grade science experiment or kitchen recipe for the youtube clicks. Whatever the intention may be here, the whole tone of this video seems to be trivializing top level science and scripting a drama for an untrained audience, not scientific peers who should be part of the audience of such a cross experiment, if at all serious. So there are disconnects out the gate. The audience is unclear, this seems to appeal to a dumbed down imaginary. "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king." Individuals not academically trained will watch this much like a History Channel-style sensation clip or the Hollywood gossip column of pop sci. It makes one wonder within the first couple of minutes who is this guy questioning a Stanford professor and with what superior qualications? And in the absence of a reply to that, plus the above-mentioned impressions, is it really going to be worth watching this video all the way through? Our time is precious. Got about 4 minutes of my time, which was double after the first instinct to click away, to give you the benefit of the doubt, which never came.

You freely chose to watch this, which means you can also choose to leave and watch something else.
