I'm not arguing for an unhappy ending or anything but it always kinda bugged me that the Skeksis' negative traits seemed to just disappear. They didn't come out of nowhere, they were split apart as the opposite half of the Mystics. The restored being admits their arrogance and rashness caused the dark age. Yet after being "made whole," their evil halves seem curiously absent, they're all light and wisdom and healing.

I think it is more that the Skeksis were total evil -- not OK. And the Mystics were total good -- also not OK. When combined together, they are "whole". Absolute good is just as "bad" as absolute evil -- just a very different kind of bad. For example, the Mystics were too good aligned to do anything about the 1000 years of chaos and had to rely on a neutral race, the Gelflings, to get everyone out of this situation.

Agreed. I might've liked to have seen the mystics in the middle of the film. Jen could've been been raised by podlings and left to seek out the mystics for help against the skeksis. For a couple of scenes he gets the story on how they came to be separated...but he only receives cryptic encouragement through riddles...and in the end they are of no help because everything is relative to them and they are neutral in all affairs of the universe. So Jen musters the courage to save Thra and the gelfling race. It is in his courage that this is done, and of course in cooperation with the prophecy. (In fact, some wise men of India have criticized the stereotypical "guru" or "mystic" for their isolation in caves ,mountain tops and far away places as loners... and for the denial of their bodies and their earthly existence. In their minds, denying their human place among their own race is the folly of the mystic.) By the end of the show, the two creatures should've been made Whole into a creature that was wholly rational, powerful, but highly emotional and present as one would expect of a creature joining its selfish and shortsighted self with its eternal and wise self. The United being should've shed tears for what it did to the planet and the extermination of the gelfling race. And perhaps the tears might've healed Kira. Could you imagine how heart wrenching that would've been to see? But all in all I feel that the esoteric message of the film still comes across decently. NStill a masterpiece in its own right. Here's hoping that season 2 of the DC series gets made eventually! 🥂

@forestsmith1892 I appreciate your comments. The UrSkeks who came to (were exiled to) Thra failed in their initial test to become more pure and failed again in breaking the crystal. A whole bunch of them had no chance to learn having their existence end before rejoining. The remaining Mystics continued to strive for purity and maybe achieved it away from the crystal...but the final test would be facing their corrupted selves that remained in rejoining. Apparently they transcended back to being UrSkeks And were acceptable enough to return to their race.

I dont think the skeksis themselves were meant to be inherently evil, that's just how they turned out. We see that with the heretic in age of resistance. I think they were the culmination of traits that we need to survive but can turn destructive if not properly guided. Pride, ego, fear, pleasure, etc. None of these are inherently bad, but can turn ugly. Compared to the mystics, who are compassion, self, sorrow, flow, etc. These are true emotions, but they lack the will of survival and drive to take them to places to better resonate. The reunion into urskeks is like the reunion of mind and heart. Now, they can properly survive and continue to resonate in a more active way. These straights that made the skeksis become so cruel will always be there. Yet this is something humans have as well. We must properly guide our survival tendencies, less they drive us to destruction
