Holbein Watercolors (Set of 18) | First Impressions Review & Vegan Paint Discussion

Hey team! Many of you have been asking about the Holbein watercolors, and luckily I was able to acquire some samples from the 18 color set (minus white and black) from subscriber and patron Tiffany. Today we're taking a look at them in comparison with other artist grade watercolors, doing a demo, and talking about the vegan aspect of these paints.
I have a real time tutorial of a king vulture using these watercolors on Bee Creative paper as well over on my Patreon! / inliquidcolor

I just bought a what Holbein is calling a Palm Box with pans instead of tubes.. I have never used Holbein paints before, but after the frustration of unwrapping the paints (which was not easy) and swatching them on the rocks and mushrooms (copied onto watercolor paper), they were beautiful, and handled really well. Love them, but not the box they came in which I switched out for a regular palm 12 pan tin.

Hi Denise! Thanks so much for doing this. I didn't know about the vegan properties of Holbein, that was quite interesting to find out. Personally, I'm a big fan of Holbein and they have a few colors that are hard to live without. Aside from some of their earth tones, I really like Perylene Maroon and Verditer Blue. I can't live without them. I was also wondering about the glazes you do on your swatch cards. Do you use a more diluted mix of the color or are you closer to the mid-tone of the paint?

I'm glad it was helpful! On my swatches, the first layer is a graded wash from as dark as I can make it to as light as I can. The second layer stripe is a fairly strong concentration. Enough water to make it flow comfortable, but as strong as I can make it in that situation.

Holbein's Rose Madder, issues aside, is one of my favorite colors. I think there's an emotional component in this unconditional love, but anyway... It seems we are on the same wavelength again (with the video topics!), which I think is pretty funny and awesome ;) Love your demo piece! ♥

They are very good looking colours, and a variety they make is nice too. I didn't like the pre-made sets, I found the colour choices weird. But as brands of paints tend to fall heavily in a personal preference category, they must be good for artists, who don't like to spend time mixing and like to use a lot of glazes - which is normal. But I would definitely buy them open stock because of colour combinations in sets. Or just a huge set if you like them.

  • @renmuffett

Yes, they do seem to put the cheapest least lightfast pigments in sets. But they do have some very excellent light fast pigments if you look for and buy the paint in individual tubes. I do love Holbein paint but I would never buy a set because I know whats in those tubes. For instance their Imidazolone Yellows are all very good lightfast pigments. One is PY154, another PY154 and another PY110 all single pigments. They have some good pigments but you just have to look for them. I do not use black paint either but its good to know that animals are not killed for their bones. Bones are the by product of an animal that is already expired that would otherwise lay waste if not used. I know PR83 is a Real Alizarin Crimson and Winser & Newton lists its light fastness as moderately durable. Not totally fugitive. However Real Rose Madder Genuine is listed as fugitive. What they did is attempt a Rose Madder using the moderately durable PR83 and using more fillers and less pigment to lighten the shade. I suppose it would then be considered more lightfast than Rose Madder Genuine. But its still far from being a good pigment just like you said.

I had a relatively easy time finding the pigment info, and its also labeled on the tubes itself so hopefully you didn't have that much of an issue. I like them a lot, although I do mostly graphic design work/commercial art so multiple pigments aren't at all an issue for me since everything gets scanned!

  • @InLiquidColor

Checking each color individually was a bit of a pain and very time consuming, although doable as you mentioned, but it doesn't make sense to me not to include it on the basic color chart from the company since they have so much other info available as well. It's on the tubes, but in my particular instance, I don't own the tubes and didn't have access to them after the fact to double check or cross reference. Also, for those researching the sets online who also don't have access to the physical tubes, so that can be an issue as well. Of course it's personal preference though on whether or not an artists cares about that to begin with :)

I don't own any Holbein, but from watching some online stuff, gleaned that they seemed to be mostly multi pigment, plus it was hard to get the pigment info. I actually wrote them, and they sent me a chart organized by paint name. I dislike that, for example their Perylene Green is called Shadow Green, so you have to browse the entire chart looking for PBk31 to see if they make one. I just can't understand the thinking there.

You just saved me $30.99 since I found this review. I've been toying with the idea of buying a Holbein set of 18--5ml tube set, but wondered why they were relatively (ahem) inexpensive. I was heading to the Holbein website to check out the pigment number for each tube in this set, but I stopped here first. For me, I prefer buying single pigment paints, because they make a cleaner mix, one I can depend on, etc, but too many here are multiple pigments. Now I know why they are reasonably (repeat ahem) priced. On the down side, now I have to wonder whether or not I should go back to the Amazon listing for this set to let people know these are not single pigments.....sigh. Thanks so much for your review!

After the Swatch with me I did, I don't dislike them, but they're outrageously expensive here in California and not worth the cost compared to others in my opinion.
