Game developers like to blame the Switch hardware for releasing broken or serious flawed games. Hogwarts Legacy proves them wrong. With more than double the units sold of Playstation and Xbox, Developers shot themselves in the foot by failing to make an effort to create quality games for Switch.

Frankly speaking, the game looks like a high res GameCube game on the switch and if you're selling your game without the Harry Potter license backing it, that can be detrimental.

They're not so much squeezing the hardware as shaving off layers of visuals until it just barely works like most Switch ports from more powerful platforms. The question is, just because you CAN get something barely working on the hardware, does that mean you should? If it's so pared back it loses a lot of the visual identity, what's the point? Look at the recent port of Mortal Kombat 1...prime case of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should".

⁠​⁠@@yellowblanka6058 You are factually wrong. It’s complete bs that most Switch ports barely work. MK1 is shit, but HL looks good and keeps the fps target of 30. The loading screens are a bother but not a deal breaker. MK11 already ran bad, so that’s more on the dev’s side and not on the hardware. You do know that back on the day it was completely normal that devs had to port their console games for gb/c/a, ds and 3dS right? And that could mean the development of a completely different port with different graphics and so on. This port reminds of that and it does a good job. If you have the option, of course you won’t but this port. But for kids and for people who want the Switch portable experience, this is a good game. Hell, it’s better than the last Pokémon game. It all comes down to optimization graphically and performance wise.

Beyond that the game is no longer open world with loading screens everywhere. Ports like this are really no different than Wii ports that modified games so they could work within the limitations of the hardware.

I honestly expected a disastrous version of the game that was nothing like the current gen release. I'm honestly impressed. Can't give this studio and devs enough props for taking a popular IP and making a passion project that respects the IP and doesn't milk you out of every dime you have. Very much hope to see future Hogwarts games from these guys and maybe a shot at some other popular IP down the road.

It doesn’t look anywhere near as bad as I was thinking it would. I already went with PS5 version which was obviously much nicer but it’s still pretty impressive for the switch. The loss of the open world and loading into places in Hogsmeade is a huge shame too as I loved going round all the shops in Hogsmeade.

I really do have to disagree with you. I watched the first 30 seconds of this video and the visual downgrade is very present and terrible looking. Unless you have your ps5 hooked up to a 1080p display I can’t believe you don’t notice the difference. It looks like ps3/xbox 360 quality at best.

So cool that they were able to get it running at all, really excited to see what this would look like on a Switch 2 in the future.

If you look closely at the statue in the distance, it appears to be the resolution of the screen-space ambient occlusion (SSAO) that takes a hit at that range - not so much the statue itself. But as the SSAO surrounds the statue, it appears to give it a pixelated silhouette.

The game looks and runs better than I was expecting, given the multiple delays. The loading screens when entering a new area/town are forgivable, but having to endure those when entering buildings/shops is rough. But hey, at least this saw the light of day! I'm still sad about the Marvel Midnight Suns Switch release getting cancelled.

Looks pretty impressive for what the Switch is capable of. Also, the load times reminded me of how older games used to handle things before big open worlds became common. So I wouldn't even be upset by that if I was restricted to just the Switch for gaming.

Always nice to see a colorblind mode added. It may not seem like a lot to the average person but as a person who's colorblind it helps me enjoy the game so much more.

Overall an amazing port, and even more amazing they promising a port and actually going through with it, instead of cancelling after a few months. This bodes really well for PortKey Games!

This is wayyyyyyyy better than I was expecting (I played it originally on PS5). I was expecting the switch port to be essentially unplayable. Is it perfect absolutely not, but it looks like they did a great job getting this actually playable on a handheld device. There's of course going to be some hardware limitations and all things considered I don't think this the switch is the first place I'd go to play this, but if I really wanted to play it on the go I'm pretty impressed with the port

I got one copy of Hogwarts Legacy and I can play the same $60 copy (or any other game) either on the desktop OR the Steam Deck, and seamlessly pick up where l left off on the same save games between either desktop and Steam Deck via cloud saves... and for many other games too. I don't get people paying double for the same game title between two different platforms when you can get the same, and more (shared cloud save games) with PC. 😊❤

Whoa, finally footage of the game on Switch. I've never played this on any other system and I think it looks pretty good! Even with its weird looking technological workarounds to make it work, still looks incredible. They should be proud to show off the Switch footage. Not being fully open world isn't too huge a deal to me. Definitely will get this on a sale and maybe when I'm done with TotK.

I honestly never thought we'd see this day. It takes soooo many hoops to play this on my steam deck and even then I still experience eventual stuttering and unplayability. And this is on the top model. While the graphics aren't hyper-realistic like the next gen console versions, this graphic style is reminiscent of old school games, I personally think it adds a new depth of charm. The framerate hit, however, will always hurt

This must have taken a lot of hard work, major respect to the team optimizing this. I love how mobile platforms push developers to optimize games, basically working in reverse and deciding what to keep instead of what to add.

Dang, I must admit the glowup on Switch looks really great and clean compared to the PC version. It's great to see PortKey Games working hard on optimizing this game onto a portable system for the switch in a really great way. It looks so nice n clean. I sure hope we see more great ports like this down the road come to switch.

@@Talon18136I mean, he's not wrong, it's a minor technical feat that they modified this game enough to work on Switch, but looking at this footage, everything looks blurry and barren compared to other versions, as I said in an earlier post it really looks kind of like a PS2/Early PS3 gen game. They had to cull back so much detail and add loading times to get it working on the Switch that it almost looks like a different game. If the screen and texture resolution is so blurry you can't really resolve anything, why bother? I'd rather play a reasonably clean, sharp game MADE FOR THE HARDWARE, than something like this where it's a "square peg" pounded into the "round hole" that is the Switch hardware. Whenever someone says a port like this "looks good" I can't help but think "compared to what?"....I mean most of these people commenting have high-resolution phones, ipads, 4K televisions etc.

A for effort hogwarts developers. If only something like this would of been done for Kingdom hearts.

Exactly what angers me is the fact that kh1,kh2,birth by sleep,dream drop distance,decoded would run smoothly on switch no problem but square didn’t even care

The fact that it plays so much better than the cloud games is amazing, there’s no way that I would compare it to the other major consoles. They did an amazing job bravo

I am impressed and happy it exists - but also surprised and shocked at so many changes and the new loading instances x.x I wish you would had shown or talked about how broom flying in the open world is; but I understand it takes a while before that's even an option and you most likely haven't made it there yet ;o;

I have to say, this is really impressive considering the hardware. It's obvious developers did a really custom version of the game to create a good experience.

I think it's fitting that the most work you've ever put into a performance review is also for a game that has seemingly put the most amount of work into optimization for switch that I've ever seen. As someone who played this on Low settings on Steam Deck, I can see the targeted areas that got boosted and reduced so that the experience was still overall enjoyable. It isn't beautiful much of the time, but it looks like they've at least gotten the bigger picture experience into hands of Switch players in a good state. Happy for everyone able to play this for the first time!

I only have the switch as a platform for playing so I am excited to play it over the holidays. 😊

The fact that you can play on the go this massive game is amazing, the teams working behind switch ports are some of the most talented in tech related stuff.

Really excellent in depth technical review. I definitely appreciate all the work that went into this. It's a brilliant game, and the caveats mentioned are very appreciated, because the loading screens into the shops might stay my hand from double dipping from the Xbox X/S version I've been playing. Hoping to see this in an "All Patched Up" video in the near future. 😉

Awesome review. Just picked up the game. 🔥🔥🔥 My ROG Ally looks miles ahead but having this kind of a game on the Switch is really mind blowing.

I love to see this. I'm always a fan of AAA titles from other platforms being successfully ported over to Switch. For this game in particular, it still runs awfully on the Steam Deck. If I could push a button to activate the instanced world of the Switch version as opposed to the full open world for a significant performance boost on PC I would. I'll probably pick this up if only to beat this game on a handheld like I originally intended to.

Great Review as always! Gamewise, the switch version feels like it has its own aesthetic and mood because of the graphics. I personally find it good looking visually, it has some mid 2000s vibe to it. Anyways, enjoying a game (for me at least) does not come down only to visuals, so I am buying this.

That would be around the last tume I played a harry potter game so I def agree that it has its own charme

Great job on the video! The game looks pretty decent when judged on its own merits. The biggest issue for me in terms of playability would probably be the added loading screens. They're understandable, but unfortunate.

Same here. The loading screens are part of the reasons I dropped Starfield. But here it's understandable because the Switch is countless times weaker than a new Xbox or PC.

My wife and I bought it last night and it’s been great. It doesn’t take away from the game at all in my opinion. Same for the Witcher when it came out for switch.

I'm still always amazed whenever they can get a game like this to work on switch, let alone run well! I'm always glad to see it.

Technical masterpiece by whatever devs actually ported this. I'm going to buy it just out of support for how well they did, I might even play it.

It's a miracle seeing this run natively on switch I was expecting a cloud version but this is amazing keeping in mind hardware limitations

The fact that it even runs on what is essentially mobile hardware is very impressive. Definitely not the best place to play it - but if Switch is your only option then I’m sure it’ll be enjoyable. For a lot of younger players, they are unlikely to be worried about lower resolutions

So I patiently waited and prayed for the Nintendo version. And I'm so happy with the results! Those people who say that other platforms are better and they won't play Switch version don't understand that a lot of people don't have anything but Nintendo so it's a blessing to have any big games like this on Switch. I’m one of those people who only play on switch and mobile. I can only play handheld as with 13 medical conditions I’m stuck in bed 24/7. I can’t even sit up for very long. The steam deck isn’t even available for ordering in my country. Granted though I’m looking forward to an upgraded Nintendo system

@@RachelXKnight666 That's what I'm talking about! Even without money issue there are a lot of reasons not everyone can afford play big consoles let's call them like this. For example, I have veeeery bad eyesight so it's physically painful to sit at PC as I'm practically glued to the screen. But I can easily put Switch right before my eyes and calmly play even without glasses. It's such a blessing really.

I have a PC yet I always choose to play on my switch because of its portability and it brings nostalgia playing games in handheld just like the old days

​​@@fatedzero1039I have a PC and never owned any consoles, I only had to buy Hogwarts Legacy ONCE, and already played it on my superior-performing Steam Deck on the plane, train, bus, taxi, and the mall on a trip overseas ❤ SAME save games from my desktop, automatically transferred by cloud save, no hassle! Pick up where I left off any time! By the way, I am able to play ALL the handheld games on it too, from the old days...

Thanks for the review! Pretty amazing to see such a massive game running on Switch at all. For a handheld version, I don't even think the trade offs listed here are all that bad.

Wow, what a feat to port this game onto the Switch. I almost expected a cloud game since that’s the route some developers have taken just to “get their game on the Switch” (looking at you Square Enix, KH on Switch is a joke), the amount of time & care Portkey put into this is incredible & respectable.

… I mean… ouch.. It’s a miracle they got it working but the compromises are heartbreaking 😬

This is definitely the Switch's technical limits pushed to the absolute max. This is to Switch what DK Country is to SNES.

After a few hours playing it on my switch, I’m so impressed! For it being a massive game on a 6 year old console it looks and feels good. Aside from a bit of lag sometimes, it’s very playable and I’m really enjoying it so far!

I'd love to see some broomstick gameplay, how does flying around the open world hold up on switch?

It's actually fine - surprisingly so !

I kept trying to find where it would say that this was a cloud game, and am thoroughly impressed that it isn't. It doesn't look the greatest, but honestly being able to take Hogwarts on the go with me is amazing and I imagine they will continue to add improvements as time goes on.

I recently picked this title up for my Nintendo Switch, and honestly? I’m loving it! I figured that since my old Xbox One probably won’t be able to play a game that’s optimised for the latest gen very well that having it on the Switch wouldn’t affect the performance in a terrible way, but by far the biggest draw was the convenience of portable play, being able to lounge anywhere I want & play Hogwarts Legacy has been an absolute game changer, I’m definitely addicted!

Honestly, it’s as I expected if not a bit better. The thing that makes the game, ie gameplay, remains then the visual downgrade doesn’t really bother me. It still looks gorgeous and like Doom before it, I think I’m really going to enjoy it 🎉

This is some Capcom-level game optimization. Very impressive. Gamefreak should take notes!

playing this on my PC, I expected the Switch version to look like cubes running around a large castle made up cubes. kudos to the team on their excellent work here!

It goes to show you can cut out loads of graphical niceties, but still maintain a game's core visual identity. Great work by the devs. As a side-note, your created character is a dead ringer for Jimmy Hopkins from Bully 😁

Thanks for doing this Mark. I have been waiting for this and you did an incredible job. Not sure it's made the decision easier as played a bit on my father-in-laws PC. I have a Mac for work and no way it will run it. I think this version will do. Can't believe they managed to do it tbh as a big game. One for family play as my wife and daughter are big HP fans. Looking forward to some family play. My biggest gripe is the beard. Although I never had a beard at school no matter how hard I tried :)

From the last Switch releases I'd say that delaying launching is always the best decision. It runs very decently. I hope they keep improving the game thus. Also I'm curious if loadings are different from physical cartridge, and running from SD or internal memory

This is exactly what I expected, and I will still probably buy it for the switch over my pc. I tend to value portability over graphics, so long as the game itself isn't compromised

These devs have really showed out, and receiving zero nominations in the GOTY awards is pretty unfortunate. Not saying they should be nominated for GOTY, but not receiving a nomination for the entire show feels unjust.

In all honesty.. I was expecting something FAR worse, they did a pretty good job with this scale of a game considering the hardware.

No one should buy objectively bad looking versions of games on switch because Nintendo wants to keep milking a underpowered piece of tech. If you want to play games portability just buy a steam deck which would give you a better experience.

Great breakdown guys! I knew they wouldn't let this version release in a super terrible state. The Hogsmeade loading sections is a smart way to manage Switch's hardware and loading capabilities. I wonder if the PS4 and XB1 versions also play like this?

I have the ps4 version and it's basically runs like the ps5 but with slightly downgraded graphics and is capped at 30fps. And the open world is seamless on ps4

Great review guys! Honestly if I hadn’t played it already on ps5 I would get it on switch. Well done to portkey games for doing what most studios don’t do. Going above and beyond for the gamers bravo!

Reminds me of the old days, when the game was made and optimized for a certain hardware, and in some sense it was a slightly different game. It's interesting that the visual takes me back to the days of PS3/Xbox360. There is some kind of nostalgia.

@@austinmull8515 Not referring to game content or quality of port. I am referring to delivering a physical version that is not a physical version. A physical/digital hybrid..... again. Just like on PS4 and PS5. They don't need to keep doing this. It's poor from all concerned. Same with the last Star Wars game on PS5 ( and it will likely be the same when they finish the announced PS4 port ). It's almost as bad as code in a box rubbish ( maybe worse )
