The reason for the double grind is for strength in really hard use. Both Bob Loveless and myself independently came up with this design originally. His called the Pro Sportsman. H liked to grind his blade ultra thin for effortless skinning in the field. Issue was that many less knowledgeable sportsmen would force the edge thru the bone joints which could crack the edge. Mine was called the Compound edge. ( I owned an Archery Shop at the time and it just seemed to fit). Glad to see my old friend Allen E. bringing it back again! :

Love my Deka (clip point, blue scales). I was told by Hogue that "We are trying to achieve an HRC level that falls between 61 and 63 so there is a possibility that your blade falls closer to 63." So take that as you will. I've had no problems whatsoever in cutting/sharpening it (though I have not put it through its paces like you have Jerad. When I asked about future Hogue models in magnacut I was told that they want to do more models in such, but for now are concentrating on smaller EDC models. I was pointed to a collab between Ritter and Hogue (a 3.5 inch bladed folder), but I'm not too crazy over that model, so I passed when I had a chance to get it. Great review. Thanks.

Awesome video. One thing I would recommend is push cutting a section of the edge, as that will dull it faster (since you’re using a smaller portion of the edge) and save time and cardboard. If you push cut a tapes off portion on all tests you can still see how each steel/heat treat compares with the same or better accuracy but less physical labor

I used to tape off with all tests to and used to use the 1inch standard but my God on some knives I have a hard time making the full 12 inch cut without running up the tape. I started sectioning off 1.5 inches in the place of the blades that fit my cut style. I wish I would do it with just a 1 inch section I just can't without running up on the tape but I can with 1.5. Thar deff increase my numbers and deff increase my work in the tests. Hell I wish I could keep it to a half inch section lol I just can't. I also use exactly the same card board (can't control the lot# but it is at least always the same make and size of card board.) I try to keep the variables as close from one knife to the next as I possibly can. I take it as close from knife to knife off the stones as possible and 2 passes per side off the stone on the strop. I will never get it totally scientific but it's as close as I possibly can. I also will not post results if I can't repeat within 3% of two tests and I never test a knife until it's on edge 4 then I repeat the test on edge 5 and if I'm within 3% I post results if not I put another edge and test again until I have two tests repeat. It really makes me sick when I have a repeat that is 4 or 5% and I gotta cut all that again lol.

The lightness makes it my daily carry. It feels like it isn't even in the pocket, and the polymer doesn't scratch anything else in the pocket... something I didn't think about ahead of time. It does feel cheap because of that and the flex is worrying, but in use, loving it. Seeing how well it cut after all those boxes is making me a real Magnacut believer...

I have the SMKW Arctic carbon fiber magnacut and I hated it for about a week. After I broke it in and properly finished the scales, I’ve used it everyday since. I’ve stropped it a couple times but have yet needed to sharpen it so I can’t speak to the hardness but it came with a great edge out of the box and still going strong after 4 or 5 months of typical use. I’m still a fan of the bugout but the Deka MC is now my dedicated summer edc going forward unless Hogue releases the mini RSK in MC.

My theory of the double grind: The far end is for slicing cardboard and food, while the near end is for pushing down for feathering wood and heavier work. Also, the coating may have come off because you were pushing down too hard through the cardboard. The edge at the tip is just like a box cutter, but with Magnacut steel. Super slicey, and it lasts ten times longer than a regular steel box cutter blade.

About to get one of these. Memorial Day weekend finally scored one right before knife show 👍with OG scales equipped from brother Doody . Wonder if it will skid across or be softer? I wanted to say this is the first day I tried a diamond paste on the strop and so far I m impressed . I was using green and white polishing bars and the edge would be glassy but super sharp but with paste .5-1.0 micron the edge is sticky 😮which is what I want . You guys been saying it’s the way to get the edge super sharp . Sometimes I just like a toothy edge with no strop . I dull a lot of blades at work so this is why I’m into it . Haven’t used a utility knife for months now

Don't mind FRN if it's thick enough so there is no flex otherwise I'd prefer G10 or micarta. The knife itself is definatly a winner in design nice and lightweight, strong lock, and great for EDC. Happy to hear that you are satisfied with the Magnacut, yes it could be better but it isn't horrible either, hitting that solid middle ground. Burnt edges are a sorry but true fact of the modern knife production industry would love to see knife companies fix this one issue straight across the board. The Deka is probably the only knife ive regretted buying. The more I use it, the less I like it. I got the same blade shape as this one, thinking im mostly doing utility stuff and whatnot, but that chonky part in the middle of the blade is really weird when slicing through stuff, it kinda gives you this weird resistance in the middle of the blade that doesnt inspire much confidence and makes it feel really inconsistent. Ended up grinding out both the chonky part as well as putting a regular belly on it. Also like you said, feels flimsy and quite frankly much cheaper than it actually is. The worst thing ive found with it is that its very prone to open itself inside a pocket, which ive never seen on other pocket knives before. Im aware that you can reverse the pocket clip and keep the blade "locked" against the wall of the pocket and all that... But I didnt expect this as its never been an issue before, and this knife took a chunk off my ring finger before I learned it. If you are using pocket knives on a daily basis, alot of us will just stick it in whatever pocket is available at the time. Having to undo the pocket clip, confine it to a single pocket, or otherwise babysit a tool, just seems unreasonable to me.

Ok thank God I’m not the only one who thinks it’s strange to have a thinner grind towards the tip. I always want the inverse, when I see this- I like a thiiiin slicer where I’m slicing and push cutting, and I want a thicker tip to avoid breaking a delicate tip in a drop or a little bit of rough housing or light prying (don’t judge me I know, I know). I understand having to have a more brunt tip when the grind is crazy thin, but the opposite makes no sense to me, aside from showing off the machining skills that could have been applied inversely. I’m probably missing something though. and I keep trying to figure out where the desire for a thinner profile at the tip. And the channels you mentioned are my go-to channels for over 4 years for steel-testing info.

I honestly think they should've went all out with this Deka! Maybe at least two options. Option 1. G10 or Carbon Fiber option 2. Titanium everything!! If this knife was full titanium, titanium hardware, with magnacut steel it would of sold like hot cakes!! FRN scales are just absolutely horrible on a knife like this. If you're going to use a fantastic super steel like magnacut use fantastic materials to complement it!! Really like how you did this video!! I gotta wonder just how much cheaper FRN is to utilize than G10 on these. I got the Acta Non Verba A100 in Magnacut, and they used really squishy FRN with half liners as well. When using a lot of force, it felt like it was biting into me just as much as it was the material I was cutting. Ended up donning some gloves to help with that. FRN/GRN isn't terrible if it's fully lined like Spyderco did with the Delica/Endura 4s, but it doesn't seem like many other companies want to do that due to the extra weight.

I said it as soon as I got my two Subzero Dekas they feel great on the stones but they are without a doubt softer then my Mule team. I felt a slight difference between edge 1 and 2 in hardness but that's it was in good steel on edge two. The sharpens good, edge retention is respectable but it's clearly on the soft side AND my two subzero dekas feel softer then the later MC dekas I sharpened for a couple customers. I have tested it at F400, F800, F1200 and F1500 and to have that good aggression I like it at F400 and F800, it's going slick F1200 and F1500 glassy as hell. It pulls up a nice fine burr easily and deburrs on demand on the stone. I would really love it if it was a point to 1.5hrc harder

I had that exact same model of the Deka, lost it yesterday and I'm not too upset. The plastic scales are about as cheap feeling as a $20 knife and the clip is weak (hence it now being lost). No idea why they opted to use this cheap handle on the magnacut version but I was not happy with the knife at all. If they release the Magnacut version with better scales I would re-buy it.

Can't what to get my deka magnacut with the wharncliff blade, I also ordered the og goat aftermarket aluminum scales, they have titanium ones too that really transforms the deka into a truly premium knife and gives that magnacut steel a real home worthy of its pedigree, might get the clip point too, idk yet

i dont know about easier because this really wasnt difficult, with the clip point you still have to raise to hit the belly and tip. i this case you have a direct line when to raise. so its just slightly different. but some people might find it a tad easier

I don't see how marking your finger and the blade helps you keep your angle. You can still change angles by way of pitch or yaw while keeping your finger on the same spot. I would like you to help me understand though, seems like a good trick to have.

I think Hogue was smart for using FRN on the *Magnacut* model, to keep the cost down around the 20CV version in G-10. You do a quick blade swap.. You'll have no handle play at all. I swapped the 20CV on a Magnacut & then traded off the FRN/ 20CV version.

An interesting comparison would be Spyderco’s run of the mill S30V vs another manufacturer’s super premium steel like M390/20CV or Magnacut on a similar edge geometry knife. I think you’ve proven that the OEM’s heat treat makes more difference than the steel.

It’s still a great knife. It’s as comfortable reverse grip as forward. I wish they’d bring that handle back. I’m considering a Spyderco Manix 2 S30 G10 though given it seems to be the most customizable
