Hogsback. Eastern Cape, another "Ironvan" Adventures episode

The village of Hogsback spreads across the crown of the plateau with the mountain peaks high above and the Tyumie river, with its many waterfalls from the Amatola (uMathule) mountains, flowing through the deep, indigenous forests. The name Hogs Back was referred to by Thomas Baines, the famous painter, on his travels in the interior in 1848. The name is a term for a geographical feature, although some think it was named after Captain Hogg, commander of Fort Michel near Tor Doone or even after the hog’s (pig’s) shape of the three peaks. The mystery of the name forms part of the romance of this beautiful place of mist-wreathed forests and fantasy.
The area is known for indigenous forests, waterfalls and trout fishing. The large gardens in the surrounding area also include exotic plants from all parts of the world, and it is a destination and tourist attraction among both international and South African tourists. Apart from 'the Hogsback', the tallest peak in the area is the 1 954 m Gaika's Kop.

Recognize where your lead vehicle got stuck. Recognize the tracks through too. Mine. Made a week before. Extremely gnarly as I was solo. Had to turn around and drive back but below the road. What an epic drive.

Used to live in a tiny dorp in the early 60’s called Seymour. We used to go to Hogsback regularly via Mitchell’s Pass which as a child was fine but I would find it scary now! We inevitably got stuck behind a ‘log’ lorry

I've been blessed to have spent many years in the Eastern Cape. Being from America, it's hard to explain my love for Africa, which runs very deep. So many friends there that have become family. Beautiful job Dirk, once again. Stunning.

How's it. Awesome video. Hogsback isn't to far away from me. I can't wait to kit out my 4x4 with some of those Ironman goodies. Would love the 4x4 bumper with a hitch and winch for launching my boat on the beach. Keep it up I really enjoyed the video.

My family and I have always made effort every year to go there. What a wonderful place for memories to be made. Next time your there, you need to discover the 'Secret Waterfall'. Drone footage will reveal its one of the tallest waterfalls in the area. Then of course for sunset, very close by is the tower. From this vantage point you get a fantastic sunset.

Hogsback is such a uniquely different SA town, have had 2 memorable stays there about 30 years apart, Hogsback Inn the 1st time and Swallowtail campsite the 2nd time, even considered settling there on 2nd visit.

I took my family to Hogsback the weekend after you posted this video. We were at Never Daunted this time. Awesome weather and we visited Away with the Fairies bon fire the Saturday evening and we ate fantastic Pizzas. Enjoyed a fire show too. Definitely one of my favorite places to go visit. Been there about 15 times now. I am from Port Elizabeth.
