i cought the same hogna species out side and shes very sweet and big and fully matured and there eyes have always made not so scary and just makes them really cute

I find wolf spiders to be very adorable and super docile in my area, I've had a Schizocosa Mccoki female once and she loved to snuggle into a crevice in my hand and never bolted when I held her or got her out in general. Herrah was a super sweet girl and I think all lycosids should be appreciated and not be frowned upon. Their parental care is absolutely amazing too, good luck with the breeding!

I freaking love wolf spiders. Dont really know why tho. I think maybe because it's common where I live and it's one of the bigger spider species we get. That and they are so fast. This was another great video Dave.

What a beauty! I don't get to see them that big often because I live up north and it gets pretty cold in winter here in the US. Love your videos!

I posted this on another of his videos, but it's actually more appropriate here. If you dig wolf spiders and live where they do (I'm on the east coast of USA, and they're everywhere), go out just after dark, before the grass gets a bunch of dew on it, and shine a light around your yard. Best is to use a headlamp, but any light will work, but it needs to be up near your eyes. Reason being, their eyes will catch the light and reflect it back to your eyes, and you should easily see thousands of them. Their eyes have a greenish tint. If you're lucky, you'll spot a reflection that looks like many little twinkles coming from the same spot, which is a mother carrying babies on her back! One night I found 4 in about 5 minutes. I found a blade of grass and touched her back, and all these little flickers started to spread out, being the babies running away. I'm creeped out by spiders, but seeing them out in the yard like that is pretty fascinating!

Haha I used to do this as a kid in rural Texas, on a nice summer night there would be hundreds in my back yard.

They love hiding out in old cars🤣 I’ve had them jump onto my face a few times while lying underneath the car/truck. I’ve referred to them by several bad words instead of their scientific name lol!!

I don't know if you saw my previous comment, but I suggested spraying the car with the air hose before working on it so you wouldn't be having face to face meetings with your unwelcome guests. Good way to get them out of your garage as well.

@@edithsavoy7156 I sadly didn’t see your previous comment. When those spiders jump out from underneath those old cars, the old cars are normally out in a field or in old tobacco barns. Normally all four tires are flat and it’s hard to even get a jack under them. It’s just one of the perks of the job kind of things 😆 I’ll definitely take your suggestion and apply it when applicable 👍🏻👍🏻

Love your video I just captured a wolf spider 🕷️ in Michigan. And plan to keep it. If I do get it used to me I'll keep it for it's life. I'm a beginner with spiders! And have rescued them lately 🙂! I love them so much ❤️

Really good this mate, i have two species that are far from adulthood yet. A Hogna schmitzi and a Lycosa Poliostoma. Will be taking tips from this video though. The little touches are great, the gravel adds that extra bit of a naturalistic look for these, more arid type of spiders. You can imagine encountering one of these, or the European equivalents on a dusty mountain trail, or the scrubland of Crete (where i have found large Lycosa species).

Wolf spiders are so common where I live which is in the southwest U.S. desert. They do come out at night and hang around porches that have the lights on just catching bugs that are attracted to lights. Tarantulas do the same as well. They are smart enough to know that when the porch lights are on, that's where they need to be. Its fascinating to watch as long as you are still. You can watch as the food chain take place, right in front of your face. The wolf spider digs a perfect circular hole into the ground and spins the most accurately perfect circular web around the entrance. It's amazing to watch. I also seen wolf spiders who are not in their nest but out and about chasing down prey. The only time I have seen them is at night and a few in the day time, but it's usually because people find them in their houses. There are also camel spiders here to. But we dont call them camel spiders, we call them nina de la tierra. Child of the earth. Now those are the most disturbing looking creation of a bug or spider that is on this earth. They are everywhere, they could be under your bed or in bed with you. It's happened to me....twice in one night!

Living in Colorado on the western slope of the Rockies e have a lot of wolf spiders. I've live here 17 years and only seen 2 male tarantula. Lots of orb spiders and of course black widows.

I am simply in love with your channel Dave, I have a couple of P.vittata that I dote on and a giant Asian mantis and I get inspired by your channel in the nicest of ways.

I was able to watch my t.albopilosum drink this morning, so cute. Yep! I love my two little spiders. I have to ask, in good faith, what is about wolf spiders that makes them so interesting? There are quite literally thousands of larger spiders that in my opinion are far more interesting. And yet here I see a spider that lives everywhere in my location, has no special attributes, doesn't get very large, being kept as a beloved pet, I'm at a genuine loss. For US true spider pet I could easily see Dolomedes tenebrosus in a collection, a very impressive true spider for the US at least. Still in glad a us native species is making someone happy, keep up the great work. :)

I've seen female wolf spiders in Manchester, Pa that are HUGE! I mean the last one I saw was down by the Conowago Creek in York County, Pa trying to cross the road and it was sitting on the yellow line in the middle and some bird was trying to lift it off the line and it was to heavy. I stopped the car and this things leg span was three inches and it was more body than leg. Would fit nicely on a hamburger roll that's how big it was. I helped it off of the road so it wouldn't get squashed. I'm not the only one to see these either but no publication will admit that we have them here this big.

i have fallen deeply in love with Wolf spiders over the years because i have lived among them for some time now. its my dream to be able to keep a female hogna carolinensis for that is my favorite type. i love everything about them and i hope to be able to fulfill this dream some time soon when i feel that i am ready. I love your channel! I have such a passion for Spiders and its always great to see others that also share this passion.

Had a WC local Hogna sp. I had for a few months. She unfortunately passed, not sure what the cause was , possible a bad molt. She was a real beauty though, saved her from a tarantula hawk trying to make a meal.

Is a 20x20x20 terrestrial terrarium sufficient ?

We have alot of wolf spiders where I live and they get huge and are super fast! Scary! U see the babies on their backs walking around

Excellent video Dave! I just ordered 2 and was happy to find such a good video on them. The ones I have coming in are about 1-1.5 inches (2.5-3.5cm i believe). How big was this one and how big do they get? Trying to decide if I should house it in something smaller for a bit or jump straight to the 20x20x20

Wolf spiders are everywhere in Georgia US especially during summer those things can be very big and creepy looking

Fantastic video Dave, thank you. I’m in Australia & have.a Tasmanicosa Giberta Wolf Spider. I feel after watching your video that I need a bigger enclosure for her, she’s about 1 1/2 inches long & hasn’t eaten since I got her, almost two weeks now. I contacted the breeder who told me not to worry, that she would probably like bigger prey about 2/3 of her body length, not sure about that. Also the enclosure they supplied was tiny, not what she came in but so small about 10cm across ! . I moved her after 2 days to a 20cm x 10 x 10 & added a water bowl & bark, something they did not suggest to do, she seemed so cramped. Maybe she needs more space again? She’s very sweet & I wouldn’t like to see her die.

They look a lot like wandering spiders.. is there any relation to these and wandering spiders? I know wolf spiders don't have the venom toxicity of wandering spider but are they at all related?

So glad I found this, thank you! I spent my whole life being afraid of all kinds of crawlies, but recently got a wolf spider. I have a good amount of dry substrate, and even made her a cave out of bark. She ended up pulling leaves and moss to make a tunnel going UP, instead of burrowing. Is that normal? I'm wanting to redo her enclosure and maybe give her more substrate and moss. EDIT: If it helps, she's a Hogna carolinensis.

Great video mate. I've had a bit of a weird one with those wolf slings. Some left mum but have seemed to die off while the the majority of them are still with her. Any ideas mate?

They will disperse when ready , has she fed yet you could try her with a small cricket and see what happens , as soon as they leave her pot them up into sling pots with a sprig of damp moss and they will be fine dont let it dry out and feed fruit flies .👍

Pretty sure I found one of these that same size on my sliding glass door when I opened it. I quickly grabbed a small container to put it in until I could make sure of what it was. Made a small terrarium after seeing you make yours and it is in it now. How can you tell a female from a male?

Every week I have to catch and release at least one wolf spider that I find in my house

Dave, do you have any experience with removing a wolf spider egg sac? Is it similar to a "T" removal? I rescued a wolf spider from being killed by a neighbor appx. 6-8 wks ago & SHE gave me quite a rare surprise by laying an egg sac about 7 days ago. Unfortunately, where I live is turning cold & the ground will be freezing shortly. I am nervous about releasing her now.

If you keep her you will have to take care of her until the spring now if winter is coming where you are ? just leave the sack with her she will carry it until it hatches 👍

@@daveslittlebeasties I live in Western Pennsylvania, USA. I've consulted 2 entomologists and a wolf spider enthusiast and the opinions are varied. One opinion is that the sac may be sterile. *Im leaning that way, as there is NO progress on it as of this morning. Another opinion is that my late autumn captivity caused her to be confused and lay a sac out of sync with her natural timetable, but if that were true, I would think it would confirm my earlier suspicion, wouldn't you agree? The enthusiast offered to pay for the babies to be shipped to him in Florida, USA, where he could release them. I'm not sure how I feel about that or if that is even legal, so I would have to do some serious research first. I cant say I would be excited to "host" 100 or so of these babies until spring, especially since I wasn't prepared mentally or physically for breeding at this point, but I will adapt- as I always do! I truly am so grateful for any input/knowlege you might take time to share!

Hey Dave, my H miami burrowed away about a month ago, I've left feeders in overnight just in case it's coming out to hunt late at night...but no activity. Should I just continue to leave it be? Wasn't sure on length of premolt/molting times since I've only ever kept tarantulas and P regius. Thanks

Some will hide away like this , if its an adult female it may have an egg case as many wild caught are gravid when they come in just keep an eye on the enclosure you may be in for a surprise 👍

@@daveslittlebeasties I gently opened its little trapdoor and was happy to see it's doing fine. I dropped a cricket next to the hole and it grabbed right onto it! Guess it's just feeling antisocial👍

These wolf spiders do get much bigger then this. I'm from Northern Kentucky. We have these guys everywhere

Ive never had a miami much bigger than this one ?, the caralinensis gets much bigger and I have those also 👍

There are many species of wolf, You can't really generalise them. They can differ in looks size behaviours etc....

I have a big female lycosa, very similar than yours from this video. Yesterday I had an idea to drop a small lizard on its shelter, surprisingly, the spider ate the whole lizard. I'm now just afraid of its abdomen.

Yes they all are to differing degrees 👍❤️

From Florida, these wolf spiders are everywhere and eat damn near anything. Roaches, ants, beetles, even the feared recluse and widow. they don't care. Never seen one eat a mantis though.
