awesome!! i really like your N3 series so far, I hope there are many more to come. you always provide soo much more extra info and examples than most other channels. i would say "死ぬほど心配した" literally translated is maybe more something like "my worry was to the degree of dying"

@@jaycee330 yes of course, but often times when learning a language so different from your own, it can be useful to really look at the precise way something is expressed, next to, of course, translating naturally. here this helps us understand the structure of how ほど works.

I think the literal translation would be closer to "About to die". This keeps the theme of ほど meaning about with both Time & Expression. "死ぬほど心配した" - I was so worried I was about to die

I've been trying to learn on my own for many years, so there's a good handful of Japanese words and phrases I know, but... it isn't at all the same as having a great teacher! Your lessons have taken about 5 years of self-learning and finally made it useable to me! For the first time, I actually understand some videos in Japanese. I would use the more polite おかげで, the second sentence is a bit awkward, as it reads 'I can speak to the extent that I'm a Japanese person'. I think you want to say 'I can speak as well as the Japanese', in which case, I would rewrite it without the 'de aru' and just make it: 私は日本人ほど日本語が話せる

The use of "ほど" as explained here expresses the degree of a thing by comparing it to something. It is natural for a Japanese person to be able to speak Japanese, and to be able to speak Japanese as well as a Japanese person is not a matter of degree anymore, but a perfect state. Therefore, I feel uncomfortable with the use of "ほど" in your sentence. For example, if there is still a little room for improvement, a phrase like this would make sense. "私は日本語を、日本に10年住んでいる外国人ほどに話すことができます。(I can speak Japanese as well as a foreigner who has lived in Japan for 10 years.)"　I use ほどに instead of ほど to make it clear that ほど is an adverb because ほど has another usage. And I think one of the following would be appropriate to describe your sentence in Japanese. みさ先生のビデオを見たおかげで、私は”日本人と変わらないくらい"日本語が話せる。　or "日本人と同程度に" or "日本人と同じくらいに" or "日本人並に"

@@danthomas4198 Oh! you know well about another usage of ほど. Let me correct your mistake on one point. That word doesn't read 並びに(ならびに), but it reads 並に(なみに). No び＝送り仮名 is necessary. This is a very useful and frequently used word. It is also used to evaluate things sometimes in an exaggerated way. ex) 彼はマイケルジャクソンなみに踊りがうまい。　彼はタイガーウッズなみにゴルフがうまい。　　彼女はミサ先生なみに教え方が上手だ。

What you are trying to say in Japanese is 数え切れない(countless)? There is no such a word as 数れない.

I read some japanese sentences that include ほど, but I can't really figure out what they mean. 1. 勉強すればするほど上手になる。 2. 食べれば食べるほど太くなります。 3. 書けば書くほど覚えられます。 4. 知れば知るほど好きになります。 5. 安ければ安いほどいいです。 6. 高ければ高いほど値段も高くなる。 Does it mean something like "If I do X as much as I can/ as much as possible, Y will happen"? Like, if I study as much as I can/as possible, I will become good. Or, if it's as cheap as possible/as cheap as it can be, it's good. But if that's the case, I still don't quite understand the meaning of 4. and 6. (I know the words, but...)

This pattern actually ば...ほど.. pattern. It means The more you do the more .... 1. The more you study the better you become 2.The more you eat the the fatter you'll get. 3. The more I write the more I can remember 4. The more i know about him the more I fall in love with him. I hope you get it sorry for my bad English. 安ければやすいほどいい- the cheaper the better 練習すればするほど上手になる。ー the more you practice the Better you get

This reminds me of a doujin i translated called "写真にも撮れないほどの近さで". I didn't translate the title for the translation, but i think it would be something like "so close that you can't even take a picture", right?

That's exactly correct. "So close (I) couldn't even take a photo.", literally "being close to the point of not able to photograph even a picture" 写真にも not even a photograph 撮れない not able to take a photograph ほどの to the extent (with "no" substituting for "ga" in the subordinate clause) 近さで is close (proximity)

You misread the hiragana "nu　ぬ" for "ne　ね". It's "shinu hodo shinpaishita" "Shinu" is the plain form of "to die".

"kashira" is the polite form of "ka na", which expresses wondering or conjecture... Ex: I wonder if it will rain? "Ame ga furu ka na/kashira?" "ka na" (or ka naa) is use far more often in speech.

~かな or ~かしら means I wonder~ . FYI... かな is spoken by both men and women. かしら is spoken by both women and gay men. lol

If there was a bag of chips served on a plane, and that bag of chips was already small but the amount of potato chips contained was so little, you could actually choke it down in one bite ... would the joke work like 口ほどにもなかった。 As the "mouths claims" as in "this huge bad will contain huge amounts of tasty potato chips" did not hold true to reality, and also the potato chips weren't even the "amount of the mouth"?

in duolingo, they teach us Goro for around with time. Is that ok too?

Her example of time is describing a "length" of time, not a point of time.　So, length of time + ほど(程) and a certain point of time + ごろ(頃) But interestingly, the term くらい(or ぐらい) can be used in both cases. ex) 12時くらいにそこに着きます　　　1時間くらい寝ていました She has explained about them in this video.

@Katherine H This is super good advice that I’ve used as well. Consistency is key in language learning but you should lower the volume based on where you’re at either mentally or in life. Remember, its a marathon not a sprint.
