Hodgdon 777 BP Substitute And Homemade Lubrication Wads

Фильм және анимация

Note: latest info is that bacon grease contains salt - forget the bacon grease. Michael McCumber likes the 45 Colt...Hello to Michael McCumber..!! This video goes into the merits of Hodgdon 777 black powder substitute powder. When shooting black powder or black powder substitutes, wads are often used between the powder charge and the base of the bullet. With black powder, lubed felt wads are often used. Here is a good and inexpensive way to make our own homemade lube wads...And there are no other videos on KZread with this particular information...

Great idea. Could you drill out the primer pocket with a 3/16" bit and use a 1/8" dowel to push wads back out. Maybe more wads could be cut before having to get them out. Shooting black powder that also smells like bacon, doesn't get any better than that.

Jeff Young - The PC is a fine way to go. We might still want to test shooting those with the wads as well - reason is that BP and subs have an early and steep pressure curve that is hard on the bases of bullets...The wad protects the bullet base from that - this is not necessary on smokeless loads as the pressure curves are later and progressive... Made a similar set up for a mate who does competes in SASS. Cut out 2 metal disks, slightly smaller than the case diameter. Drilled out the primer pocket, then welded and dremeled clean a stem to the first disk. Pushed the stem and disk though the case so the stem was out side of the case and welded the second disk to the top to make a little push button wad cutter. Cost les tha $1 AUD to make at the time. Not sure how you'd go about making it hitable with a hammer for thicker/harder materials, but it works if you just pushed down from the sides with enough pressure.

triple 7 is a really good, i use it in my 45-70 trap door with 57 grains of FFG and a wad. has way way less fouling, however i noticed that it does have more pressure, and i haven't used it in my toggle link 1873, or 1866 rifles yet, scared it might cause issues down the road. my guess is that it will be fine with a wad, i would just rather use Goex in my lever guns because of faster loading, and less prepping, and no chance of a pressure spike, but more cleaning haha ! good video !

If you reduce the load to match Goex velocity, it works out that it is no more expensive per shot than the regular Goex, but is much less fouling. In my percussion revolvers, it cleans a bit easier than 777 - I think you'd like it.

Anthony Ruberti - AYK, there are a number of Lee powder measures that directly attach to the Lee powder thru expand dies. But the problem is that with the 4HTP,, the measure would be subject to the rotation of the die head and thereby get inconsistent packing of the powder. This suspension of the RCBS UniFlow obviates all of that... of course, testing of the die mounted measure might show no problemo, and a good thing... A very fine Memorial Day to you, Steve

I've been switching over the last few years to 777 3f for my cap and ball revolvers, due to ease of availability and to save the real black powder for my caplocks, and flintlocks. Crisco is a slight mistake in many cases, it work it not the best. Strain the bacon grease and mix it 50/50 with beeswax. Crisco tends to react weird. It actually makes it a little harder to clean. it keeps the foweling very soft, true, but I've found it soaks more patches when cleaning. If your going to run a steady diet of BP, if suggest you season your barrel like a cast iron skillet for it. Takes time, but once your done, the barrel cleans up a ton faster and it's more resistant to the corrosive fouling.

Lots of people say its very clean, but it tends to produce low muzzle velocities. I though of picking some up, but hesitated because I can make BP for $5/lb with the Skylighter BP kit - I like real BP (especially Old Eynsford, which is very clean, high velocity similar to 777, and performs like Swiss) but I'm happy with 777, its pretty clean, and relatively inexpensive when you load by velocity.

@@FortuneCookie45LC Free is always the best price like you say Cookie! LOL. For .36 cal BP Uberti 1851 Colt navy repro, to make wads I bought a punch from KMS tools here in Canada ( 3/8ths dia.) from their discount table for $2.50cdn. No muss no fuss. Sometimes you just gotta be lucky too and in the right place. With the punch, no need to wrestle the wads out from inside a case as the punch has an opening where they come out as you keep punching. But having said that I don't know if anyone makes a punch for .45 cal. that will suit the purpose. For those that want to know I use the F-1 SAE industrial wool felt. You can buy the felt by the roll like 6 ft long and 12 inches wide in a lot of cases. Not expensive either and churn out a couple thousand wads easily! Wool is the key here and lube it up with a little bore butter and it works like a charm. It sure beats smearing that crisco/beeswax mix all over the top of the cylinder as many BP users do to prevent chainfire. Also the crisco method is messy as hell and also turns the BP fouling into a sticky mess where biodegradeable bore butter does not chemically react with BP and makes the powder fouling super soft and amazingly easy to clean out. It also seasons the bore of your BP firearms much the same as an iron skillet. Hope this helps for those interested. Thumbs up to you Cookie for all your input and great knowledge that you share. Smokeless, any wads are basically undamaged. Since I'm getting good results with the little wad, I'll probably keep doing that - the Hodgdon tech said that if we wish to use a wad with 777, use only a thin one.
