Hockey Explained (Rosters, Positions, Officials, Stadiums, Ice & More!) [2020]
Спорт
Are you new to hockey? If you want to start watching hockey, but you don’t exactly understand what’s happening on the ice, or what everything even is, then this video is for you! Hockey is an amazing sport, but without some context, it’s easy to get lost in the speed of the game. In this video we’ll talk about everything you need to know before you watch your first game.
In this video we’ll be talking about all the things that you see when you turn on the tv, or first sit down in the stands. First we’ll go over the arena, then we’ll talk about the personnel running the game, and finally we’ll go over the composition of a hockey team.

@ansioh Thanks so much for the kind words! I tried to create a female character, but I just couldn't get it quite right. I'll keep trying though. As for more diversity with the players, that is a fantastic idea! For this video, I just copied and pasted the same player model, but in the next ones, I'll take time to make sure that we have a more accurate representation. Thanks again for the feedback :)

It would be cool if you could do a series on Volleyball, both on the court and on the beach. There are many tactics that are hard to understand with the positions switching in and out and strategies.

This was an amazing tutorial. Really. I've been watching hockey for a little less than a year and picked up on a lot of the in-game stuff, but I didn't really know what a defenseman was (I basically thought they were players more skilled at defense instead of offense, but they're an actual position), or what most of the zones meant. Most of the stuff I knew was from The Mighty Ducks, but other than line change, it didn't really explain the rules all that well. It doesn't seem like "fighting" is really enforced in the NHL, though.

Brand new fan here, did like hockey years and years ago. Just getting into it properly now, thanks for the video
This is really helpful. My wife recently started playing hockey and I’m at the point where I have lots of questions about the game while spectating. Your videos explain everything so clearly and take away a lot of the confusion. It’s such a fun and exciting sport and it’s the first time in my life I’ve actually cared about the rules of a sport I wasn’t actively playing 😂

I’m canadian…I’m 28 but I’ve been watching hockey for over 20 years and it, along with soccer, is one of the easiest sports to understand lol….the only thing that might be hard to sometimes understand are the penalties and offsides (which is when the player crosses the offensive blue line before the puck does) but other than that, it’s a really easy sport to understand lol
Also (if you didn’t mention it) the blue lines are used for ‘off sides’ or ‘on side’. To be off side that means that a player is in the offensive area before the puck. That means that the player is in the zone then he or she touches the puck. They will then use the other face off points in the neutral zone.

I just watched all of your videos, they’re great! The graphics along with the clear explanation really helped me understand. Please do more. I’d like to see other sports explained: golf, american football, soccer, etc. I loved the hockey ones, and wouldn’t mind more that explain the draft process, fighting rules, penalty calls, history, anything, just more. Great job.

Hey thanks so much! I was thinking about doing one on salary caps - but I like your ideas as well!
An offside is basically where your skating really fast, and you get into the other offensive or neutral zone before the puck is going and gets there. Also, it can also be when you move out of the zone the puck is in, and go back in in a short amount of time. That will cause the refs to call an offsides play and a new draw will be done.
I've been watching hockey for at least 15 years now and I still watched this whole video for some reason
Are you planning on doing anything to explain easy rules like icing and offsides? That's what my new fan friends really need, though this was great!

This video is fantastic. I’m just getting into playing/watching hockey and this explains a lot. Thank you very much.
An interest in watching ice hockey can strike at any age. I saw my first ice hockey game in person less than two weeks ago. Now I am a fan; I would qualify for senior tickets if they are offered. Last year I moved to where the SPHL team Rail Yard Dawgs resides, but I didn't even know there was a hockey team until the Dawgs won their league's championship, the President's Cup. Our neighbors offered guest tickets and transportation to the last home game this year. My husband didn't have a bad time, but I had a great time! I attended my next game solo, and he has agreed to accompany me to the first game of Round 2 in this year's playoffs.
Going to my first game on the 26th so I really needed this. Thanks 🙏🏼.

Australian rules football does interchange whilst the ball is in play. The only time a ref stops play is if a player is injured and has to be taken off on a stretcher.

I miss the enforcer days. Probert dropping gloves was always entertaining. Hockey isn't big in Australia but I trained under a coach who played for Calgary. The league isnt as fast paced as the NHL and checking rarely happens.

@@BenchWormSports to be honest, it was more entertaining than I thought it will, I really loved it! I used to underestimate the fact that they do these things on ice skates, but it's harder than it looks on TV, and I think it takes years to master. The event was sold-out, with 7600 people attending, even though Nuremberg lost 4-2 in DEL play-offs!
Now when I think about it, its kinda unusual for hockey to have separate bench for players who are expelled for 2 minutes or more bcs in all other sports expelled players go to their teams bench
I would have also pointed out how to tell the deference between the Referees and Linesmen. The Referees uniforns have an Orange Disk on the sleeve.
As someone who tries to get into a lot of the offseason moves, do you think you could do a video explaining salary caps, trades, etc?

Awesome question! The lines aren't set in stone, but if the team is having a good game, it's not likely that the coach will switch up the line combinations. If a team is struggling, you may see the coach make adjustments and move around players, forming new line combinations. Sometimes you'll hear a commentator refer to this as "putting lines through a blender". I also didn't touch on special teams in this video - teams have different lines when they're on the powerplay and penalty kill. I'll make sure to get to that in a future video.
