Hockey Backhand Shot Tutorial

The backhand shot in hockey: deadly when executed properly, but difficult to do well and definitely not practiced often enough!
In this video I show you the correct backhand shot technique, the common mistakes that a lot of beginning hockey players make, and how to correct them. We start practicing standing still, then gradually add speed, coming at the the from different angles and out of the crossover!

@@kantstenchonthemel5641 that’s great to hear! Try filming yourself; I find looking at video of yourself shooting helps a ton!

Hi Coach Marcel! You mentioned braking on the backhand shot. My concern is a high-stick penalty with full follow thru. I think there is no high-sticking if you're taking a shot or passing, thanks for the schooling!

Hi Tom. Yes I also mentioned you can’t follow through if there is a defender in front of you. But if you have room- always follow through!

Great video, Coach Marcel! 🍻 I’m wondering what flex stick you’re using, as the slo-mo shots (6:37) show a decent amount of bowing. I presume this is mostly from the resistance of the ice and the weight of the puck, and not a conscious action on your part, correct?

Thanks a lot! I use a pretty whippy stick, 70 flex. It’s mostly the resistance of the puck, because on the backhand you don’t push your blade into the ice as much as on the forehand.
