TotalBoat supporting some great channels that I follow.

I really like how you just get into a project without overthinking the work and when you execute, you make adjustments as needed and get the job done. The products created by Total Boat are amazing! This is the essence of Sam Holmes Sailing.

Lets all agree this episode is a total boat commercial. But, Sam has earned the credibility needed to test the product. Sam can be counted on to do the right thing. He’s put his life on the line through a few oceans. Enjoy your effort Sam.

Lol, I'm losing my shit watching how he does that stuff but he's such a likeable guy and I love the channel. But when they painted the name on the boat I literally just had to look away for a moment haha

The great American pass time-- drilling holes in boat. Simple: buy a boat, drill a hole.

When your other hobby is also sailing.

Hey, cool projects. I've made amas (floats) out of that pink insulation foam. Twice now. I'd made some very skinny kayaks that were unstable (I expected them to be - I was after speed). I just put a layer of glass over the pink foam floats - worked great, they're holding up now for years. I buried some wood in them to attach aluminum tubing to. No problems. To bolt them securely at the top of your mast (but I'm sure by now you've already done whatever it is you were going to do) I might epoxy on or embed circles of plywood as big washers. And if you ever worry about your epoxy mix ratios. I've gone to using weight instead of volume. Small digital scale, or a 5 kg kitchen scale. Plastic over the top against drips. Then I just make a spreadsheet. They're all ratios so if you use grams or ounces it doesn't matter. (if you have 0 to 10 in 0.2 increments you can cover anything you do. Also weight ratios will be different than volume ratios so you have make your chart accordingly.) I zero it out with the empty container, pour in some resin. Say it's 21.5 grams, look at the chart. 22 grams needs X hardener - but I just look at the total weight calc - maybe it's 29.5 g. I get anywhere between 28 to 31 and I'm good.

What conditions are acceptable for the Hobie crossing? The Bahamas video is likely to draw significant interest (similar to your California-Hawaii adventure).

Flat calm waves with winds from the west or south if headed east to the Bahamas, and winds from the east or south if headed west to Florida. Also, must be sunny and warm. Otherwise it is insane.

Most up size to a bigger boat. Sam gets a hobie. Thats why his channel is my favorite.

Love Sam, but every hole drilled into a Hobie float breaks a piece of my soul.

Nice work! I recommend that you make sure your mast doesn't leak. If for some reason you flip and it fills with water you'll never be able to get the boat upright without help from another boat.

Can confirm even in the smallest of dinghies a leaky mast makes it impossible

Another awesome video Sam, you have become must watch content for me. Never sailed a day in my life but have learned so much watching you, wife thinks I'm nuts because I am googling terms you throw out there, reading about sailing has become a whole thing now. lol

Hey Sam - Love the videos! I’ve been watching since you went to HI. Some of the best times I’ve had sailing were on a Hobie 16 that I restored. One word of caution for your longer trips - make sure you bring spare rudder(s). I’ve snapped those white ones a couple times, and you’re left dead in the water. Have fun in the Bahamas!

@@kwaaaa I think they just get old and brittle. UV doesn't help. EPO 3 are really great rudders, but spendy. I always have just made sure to keep the plastic ones covered from the sun, and if I restore an old Hobie, to just replace old ones. If I don't know the history of any important sail boat part, I usually try to replace or restore it (if possible). I also always carry a spare rudder on a Hobie 16.

I still find it amazing how (not just you, but anyone) people spend more "customizing" their boat than what it originally cost. But I suppose that's why one tends to spend as less as possible getting said boat first! Love watching your repair AND sailing videos.

if you are sailing to the Bahamas you need a mast float, and a boom tent with some mosquito screen. You also should put ports in the hulls for storage of light items. Purists will be horrified, but I cut four inches off my rudders for sailing in the very shallow Outer banks and NEVER regretted it. It works a treat.

Fun Fun Fun. Love this, such a counterpoint to your Scandi cruising. Less=more.

An idea for your anchor placement could be to fit a plank of wood between the mast and a wire connecting both hulls at the bow. The anchor could sit out on that at the centerline.

Hi Sam- Great seeing you restoring the Hobbie! I have a 16 that's probably the same age. A tip for anyone out there do something a little more extensive- I had shallow, small gouges to fill and fare in the sides and bottom of my hulls so I took each hull off of the trampoline posts (not that hard to do) and set them upside down on saw horses. Thanks for posting- love these videos Sam- and good luck on the passage to the Bahamas! I hope you can 'buddy' with someone else doing the crossing. Dean

This videeo was very interesting for me, since I'm also fixing up a H16. This is my 8th boat, so wanted to comment, on the things your doing. I never thought of attaching the anchor like you tried, I would just attach it to the striker bar, or someplace different. Mainly tho, because I use a jib, which I wouldn't want to get snagged on the anchor. Also, I would put a piece of mesh on front, the same size or almost, as the trampoline. You would have to make a frame work, put it on stilts of some kind, to raise it off the pontoons. (I'll give you the mesh, if you contact me.) And you don't need bottom paint, it's only for boats that sit in the water all the time, tho maybe your will. I use epoxy and clothe on the bottoms of all my boats. It is then as hard as concrete. With catamarans like yours, and you are often is shallow water, if you hit a piece of coral or debris of some kind, you can easily put a hole in the pontoons. You would sink, or be unable to sail it then. I use only West System epoxy, and it is similar to what your using, maybe more expensive, but still, worth it. And I put it on the edges of the rudders also, because they often hit the bottom, or could hit some obstruction or other. And I was thinking when you were sailing up near Scotland and Norway, that your in a different sailing world than me, catamaran sailing in Miami. And now your here ! So I'm learning a lot from how you sail and set up your boat. Also contact me, if you need a bigger boat, or trailer.

My Hobie is a little bigger, but my Cape Dory is a little smaller. I sail Penobscot Bay and a lake in Maine. I enjoy your adventures. Camp cruised an open dory once for seven weeks down the New England coast. Simple coastal voyaging is awesome.

Hi Sam , another great video, the Hobie is really coming along. Its a really great project. Although I cant help thinking that where you have mounted the anchor makes me worry that you could posibly land on it if you loose balance or hit a wave when you out on the trapeeze. I think I would have mounted it under the front of the tramp. or maybe cover it with a padded cover.

cool you have a dedicated spot for the anchor - maybe a bungee cord of the correct length would be fast and take one hand great boat - keep on sailin'

Ya gotta love the "MacGyver" approach of Sam's upgrades. Work with what you've got; don't over think it; and get the boat back on the water as soon as possible. Love it!

I love your YT channel Sam and am a devout subscriber. But my OCD makes it hard to watch your repairs and mods... Not even getting into safety items... That being said, YOU are out there doing it!!! Respect. Happy seeing Zoey again and seeing her be more engaged with the fans out here in YT land. Watching your tracker I see you already made it to Grand Bahama. Keep that puppy switched on. Keep it up guys...

Looking forward to see a crossing to the Bahamas. Really thinking about doing it with my small boat and it would be great for research purposes. My boat is a monohull and not all that fast but very sea worthy. I tore it apart and built it like someone was going to sail it around the world. I know one day I'm going to push it.

Now do it with a Sunfish.... lol. I wanted to do the same trip in a 20'er day sailor, but I spent most of last winter in the hospital in Fort Myers , fighting a bone infection that ended up having me come back to North Carolina and caused me to lose my big toe last week... I just happened to find a Hobie Cat on market place, .... now I am thinking.. or more like plotting.. a cruise around Florida and possibly a Bahamas trip.. lol

Foam brushes allow you to get a thinner coat. He used bristle brushes for the epoxy basecoat.

This is a lot of work to be doing on this little boat. And I’m wondering where is your cape dory all this time? I’ve skipped a bunch of your videos so I’m sure there’s some plan that you have in mind for all of this, but I can’t follow the plot right now. Might be nice if you occasionally did a recap on what’s going on, for those of us who haven’t watched every one of your videos. Just an idea, look forward to what you’re going to do with this one tho, cheers 👍🏻

Hi love your content and your contagious and constant smile! I sailed a hobie 16 for many years... I think it was a 1983 from its original sail color. She leaked tho. 12 hrs on the water and waterlogged, had to pull out and drain. Always dreamed of sailing her to Rio. Loved hiking out and hauling a$$... so fast. I sailed on gusty Midwestern glacial lakes... lots of pitchpoles! But with a hobie you're not doing it right if you're not pulling it out of the water. do you have a self righting system? I like the Hawaiian rig, its just a bungee under the trap. Good luck!

Sam, Check your rudder attachment screws, sold a Hobie 16 after a few years on the racing circuit & the new owner said the rudders fell off, some how that was my fault.

Please get some caps on the ends of that anchor. Maybe some PVC tube with round end caps. Secure with bungee like scope covers. I was going to mention in the previous video. You fall on that and it won’t be good.

Cut the anchor. I did on mine and works just fine with shorter arms…

Sam - sounds crazy but maybe 3D print an extension to the anchor. I liked you idea of grinding it off as it got in the way. So the 3D print cylinder would slip onto the “bitter end” so to speak. I think that’d work nicely

Some questions? Why was there water ingress into the hulls? Why are you not using a jib? I know that Hobies usually have a full suit of saill including a spinnaker.

Why did you register it? Hobie 16 does not need to be registered. 16 and under non powered boat does not require it. Also in hind site I guess you should have reinforced the rudders with some fiberglass.

Love the video been following since Swedish fish I was wondering as I want to do this in Sweden for example did you get your boat insurance if so which one as it would be my home

Hobie Cruising is the best. Love all the mods, except the bottom paint. The paint makes the boat heavier and it gets on you whenever you climb around, launching or swimming.
