    Nice review. I’ve owned the outback ‘18 and ‘19. Now have the PA12 ‘20. I tried out the compass initially and loved it’s zip and maneuverability on the water but not the storage and feature set. That being said I’m disliking the PA12 in bad weather, frankly the outback was better on the water and had much better fishing gear storage… but I’m now considering the compass because of its better (seemingly) ability in big swell and wind which I’ve had to deal with much of this year. So very nice video, I have some thinking to do…!

    Hey Byron great video. Shame i didn't get to watch it in time for the giveaway, i love my 2018 compass. Also if you decide to keep it or just want to try it out, the pa sailing rudder fits the compass with a small chop to rudder for even more improved turning circle. cheers for the video loved it

    Thanks Byron, a really informative and attractive video as always. How can I not opt for the Compass after listening to your lucid appraisal?! With a few simple mods this kayak becomes a very capable workhorse with attributes that suit a slightly different fishing space than the heavier hobie battleships….just as select rods/reels/lures are used to target different fish species. Cheers.

    Great video! I've owned a 2018 Hobie Compass and recently upgraded to the 2020 Hobie Outback. One thing you didn't mention about the Hobie Compass is that if you plan on using the latest fish finders on the market, the transducers are too big for the Lowrance ready plates. The best, and probably only option, is to purchase a BerleyPro cover for it. And the cost for one as well as the inconvenience of now having a new lower point of the kayak bottom is a big deal breaker for me and potentially a lot of other folks. Having the new Hobie Guardian system is an amazing feature that should be mentioned.

    My wife has a compass and I just ordered 2022 in camo for myself. Weight was big concern for me. Was between outback and compass. Certainly cannot go wrong with either but for me just an easier kayak for me to handle and I want to car top it with my Jeep. Also when I use her compass it takes a small effort to hold consistent speed. I’m a little concerned about 2022 seat clips but shall see…

    I was going to purchase a compass but found a used outback for 2500 USD. I went that route mainly because of the dual steering handles. If the compass would have had those it would have been a no brainer because I thought everything you said about it. The only issues is all the little upgrades Hobie has you do. They need to have one set up like you had. If they did the guardian plate and dual handles it would be awesome.

    Great review. I'm trying to decide between the Compass and the Outback. My biggest concern with the Outback is that it weighs 20 more pounds. At 85 lbs, I think the Outback isn't going to be nearly as easy to handle and get into the water. I have a pickup truck, so either would fit fine, but I will be loading and unloading it (as well as storing it) by myself often, and that 20 lbs seems non-trivial. My concern with the Compass is the seat. I have heard the Compass seat isn't as good as the Outback. Do you have any comments on the comfort or design of the seat for the Compass versus Outback? I know this review is several months old, so I understand if you don't reply.

  • @ByronTeaHill

    @ByronTeaHill

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Kevin, thanks very much for the comment, The outback seat is better than the compass but only marginally. The thing to consider if you're a heavier gentleman is that there's a bar across the back of the seat on the compass that you may push against if as the seat compress's down. you'll see it when you look at photos, but thats probably why I say the outback is better

    Hi Byron, I've been watching a lot of kayak video reviews. I narrowed it down to three PDLs. Hobie Passport 12.0, Hobie Compass and Old Town Sportsman 12.0. I'd like your opinion on which one you think would be best for me. I'm a 5'11" 220 lb. reasonably fit soon to be 70 year old male. I'll be using the kayak for recreation as well as some fishing on smaller lakes and slow moving rivers. Your suggestion on one of these three (or any others you might recommend) is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. Ben in Pa.

    Gottan do the math here, and see how it would cost me to get the compass+ all the gear you upgraded, but counting taxes and maybe some shipping cost, i'm inclined to believe that the total price if not equal or more expensive, it would be very close to the outback. I honestly like the compass hull design more, and by your review it would perform better for sea fishing. You video was great, and gave me an option, so thank you for that!

    @@ByronTeaHill so i've been looking out to our retailers, math donne, the outback is 4k, the compass almost 3k, the retangular hatch is 200€. The full upgrade might not reach the 4k mark, but for just a few bucks, i could get the outback. So at least in my country it might not be worth the effort! :)

    I mainly fish saltwater and large open bays. Often it is choppy. How does the Compass compare to the Outback and PA in terms of stability? Thank you for this video.

    Compass is better in weather than the outback. It’s about the same in the PA, but you can stand up and stretch the legs a little easier in the PA

    I had a compass as well as an Oasis, idea being I could use the compass solo of course. It turns out I would rather use the Oasis solo because the compass chairs are so damn uncomfortable. I sold the compass after 4 months.

    As someone who owns a passport 12 and compass, I prefer the Passport 12. I have a fully rigged Passport 12 for the cost of my stock compass. The Passport seems a stable and as nimble in the water.

    Love my 2021 camp compass, can cruise at 6km and not notice, turns on a dime. I’ve made all the mods bar the handle. The rear space is crazy large with its fat butt. I’m not sure if you noticed the want to yaw when running with a choppy swell which is moving faster than you. You will sit up on the crest and the back will want to chase the front. I found running across the swell the compass handles it so much better. Roof topping and the price pushed me to the compass over the outback. Nice review, good to see the compass getting some love.
