“Vulnerable to plunging fire… Maybe I should close the distance” That is *literally* why Admiral Holland ordered _Hood_ and _Prince of Wales_ to attack bow on with the _Bismarck_ and _Prinz Eugen_ at the Battle of the Denmark Strait and part of the reason instead of taking his ships into a battle line and using they're vastly heavier broadside firepower to their advantage. Instead only having a marginal advantage bow on that dropped fast because _Wales_ was being sent into battle before she had a proper shakedown.

Hood and PoW meet Bismarck and Prinz Eugen with their bows facing her only because Royal Navy screew ups and too late deployment of both heavy ships which allowed Germans to cross the T first. However, in moment of the Hood explosion both British ships were in process of turning broadside toward German ships when Bismarck fatal shoot struck Hood. Looking now from historical perspective neither Hood noir PoW should be deployed against Bismarck and to be honest if Lutiens would be more agressive during very first minutes of the battle instead turning Bisco in to "practice target" (which later on bite him pretty hard) then this battle would end very possible with both British ships sunk...

@@bobbyrayofthefamilysmith24 Don't forget that Prince of Wales survived this battle mostly thanks to Lutiens ineptitude and far too strict following orders to avoid any confrontation with Royal Navy (which of course in the very moment they started to clash with Holland's squadron should be ignored) and because of that he allowed damaged PoW to disengage and live to fight another this time deadly for her battle at Kuantan around a year later. Yes, you are correct that Hood wasn't made from "tissue paper" but still since the introduction of the battlecruiser class one thing was clear because of the specification set for this class by the Royal Navy... " *they should UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES engage in direct combat against Battleship due to designed thin armor necessary to survive such encounter* " Has Hood instead of being "Royal Navy's Propaganda cruise ship" sailing literally around the world at late 30th undergo full refits like Renown and Repulse then perhaps she might have a chance against Bismarck (and I'm not talking about Japanese style refit for their Kongou class which turned them into pretty durable Battleships despite being 'born" as Battlecruisers (based on British Tiger class)) but in her state from May 1941... even large part of British Admiralty said that she should NEVER be deployed in first place... and the most tragic irony in this entire history is that Hood's refit was in fact scheduled... *at the time she returns from mission against Bismarck* ... which of course never happen...

@@asheer9114 it's Almost as if your saying the battle was a forgone conclusion, that the outcome was the ONLY possible outcome. This type of deterministic argument gets thrown around a lot. The fatal hit had to land within an area a coupe of square meters to detonate the ship the way it did. That's an extremely unlikely event. The hit was at the exact right place at the exact right time, a split second earlier or later and it wouldn't have happened. A few feet either side it wouldn't have happened. As the range closed hoods odds improved as her exposed weakness reduced. The Germans faced 2 ships that combined outgunned them, one exploded after an extremely improbable miracle hit and the other suffered complete mechanical breakdown. You can't deny that was a pretty lucky encounter on their part. The victory was more due to luck and circumstance than any tactical or technological superiority.

Benito Mussolini: Ironically I was graced with a conversation with a Cold War admiral Bryson and there was a plan put forward after Vanguard for a Modern battleship. Instead of main armament it would Feature battle cruiser characteristics with Missiles and torpedos. Designed to deter the Russian Behemoths such as the Kirov with Harpoons and the typhoon class with Nuclear Depth Bombs. That would have Been the next Flagship labelled Hood. But it was the 80’s, britain was fucked and the BAOR had all the funds and the Government was getting rid of ships, not building them. The cost and necessity for a Flagship or new Era of warship is non existent. Hence why the RN just wasted £10 billion on a carrier capability that can barely handle a third world nation.

I used a max size BC with underwater torpedo tubes, and flew in there at 49 knots. Basically circled it while launching torps, and only barely survived to win the mission. I tried several different gun-duel type BCs, but you can't really trade with a BB like that, you don't have the weight to have the combination of firepower and protection that the BB can.

Hood was not sunk by plunging fire - she was too close for that. At c. 16-18,000 yards Bismarck's fire would arrive at about 11-14 degrees. A simple belt penetration is the likely answer.

I don't understand the attitudes that seem to exist around the Hood - Bismarck engagement. People seem to either act like it's some kind of humiliating result for the RN, or like the Bismarck got insanely lucky in finding one little weakness in the armour or something. Bismarck *did* get horrendously lucky with the shot that destroyed Hood (just down to how it hit directly into ammunition), but it's not like Hood should have been able to stand toe to toe with Bismarck. We're talking about ships that were built like twenty years apart. I wouldn't expect a Tiger 2 (even significantly modernised) to be able to stand up to a Chieftain and that's the time gap we're talking about. Hood was armoured like a battleship of her era, and Bismarck had modern 15 inch guns - one should expect Bismarck to be able to completely negate Hood's armour. I think it's quite possible that if Bismarck hadn't directly hit the area that she did hit the battle could have gone significantly differently, but that's purely because Bismarck was outnumbered

Lol... 18 inches on Hood's Hull = capsizing after first salvo. 😅 Heck evev HMS Furious in her days as Battlecruiser carried only TWO 410mm guns (single barrel in two towers) due overall Battlecruiser specifications which limits general size of the main guns and armor in favor of high speed. Because of that BC's "design flaw" many historians are pointed that Hood should NEVER be sent against Bismarck not only because of her overall age but such lack of armor (especially deck one) to be proper adversary for brand new German BB... Heck, even David Beatty known that you should never send Battlecruiser to face Battleship because BC would not stand Ant chance against BB. 😏

My guns were maybe landing a hit every 3rd or 4th salvo, while his were getting at least 2 overpens per salvo. I only managed to bring him down to 77%, while he just gradually whittled down my HP to nothing. Instead of going out in a catastrophic explosion from a single “golden bullet”, it was a humiliating death by a thousand cuts.
