The § symbol is a variant of the ampersand (&) and on Bedrock (at least from what I know) is for colouring text, making them bold and also corrupt. I remember using it years before the glow squid came out for glowing signs.

I don't remember what version, but it coincided with the early days of the Xbox 360 edition and worked on Java and 360 at the time. If you had a cobblestone generator like that and placed a redstone dust in the space where it should generate a cobblestone, it would replace the dust with an obsidian block instead.

I know that weird symbol. As a veteran of console edition, § was used on signs with another digit or character after it (I don't remember the specifics, I haven't used it in a really long time) to make the text on signs colored, and to get that weird text that cycles through a bunch of characters really fast. I remember discovering that on a random youtube video several years ago. Only ended up trying it out to see if it worked though, never really had a need for it in my builds.

1:49 § is the symbol used to effectively format text, using colors, bold, italics, etc. It is more prevalent in Bedrock edition, where the symbol is present in the mojangles font, can be seen when typed out, will more effectively show you what you have changed about the following text, and works basically universally across the game. One of the few features Bedrock has better than Java.
