I always love that image with the death korp in the beginning. Kind of humanize them a bit. Deep down the death korp is an army of regret and penitence.

Given a uniform a gun told they signed up for 15 years and they'll probably never see home again regardless of whether or not they survive those 15 years. The regiment is the only thing they have left.
