Dear HMCS Harry DeWolf crew: Please affix a Go-Pro facing forward, up high and record a time lapse video of your transit of the Northwest Passage for those of us who will never get the chance to see it. You might even extend it to your complete circumnavigation of the North America (in the footsteps of St. Roch!)

The circumnav takes longer than an hour or a day. They can show tidbits and clips from everything around them. That way you guys are able to see more what they have done and what's happening around them. if its just a 3 hour long time-lapse, you will be missing so much more than just looking forward.

Pretty amazing ship. I hadn't realized they'd be built to be so flexible in operating conditions. A lot of engineering has go to into making such extremes work well. I'm glad we'll have ships that are flexible enough to go anywhere if need be.

@@doogleticker5183 Well, for starters, ice breaking. We have a Navy that is incapable of breaking ANY ice for the last 60 years. That’s hard to believe but true. A country as wealthy as Canada has not had the capability to send an armed vessel on or under the ice. We have the longest coastline in the world, much of it ice-covered for long periods of the year. We rely on the capabilities of the Coast Guard, a civilian, unionized organization that is chronically underfunded and is primarily responsible for the safe navigation of Canadian coastal waters. These ships have been designed to operate any where on the globe in a constabulary role. They are not front line combat vessels but will be used for patrol duties primarily, and that includes the Arctic. The government will have a greater presence in the Arctic to enforce our sovereignty over that vast space. They can carry sea containers to aid in disaster relief. They have extra berths on board to carry scientists, RCMP personnel or personnel involved in civil aid. They can carry and store a medium weight helicopter and the crew needed to fly and service it. When all of these capabilities are combined you end up with a very versatile vessel that can be utilized in countless ways. And since there will be 6 of them that means a least 2-3 will always be available for tasking. The HDW is in the Arctic now for the first time and Very soon the second vessel will be accepted into the RCN for trials. Things are beginning to move in the right direction.

It’s a patrol vessel it doesn’t need to be heavily armed that class is used mostly for utility. The type 26’s will be where the teeth are. Hopeful we see additional surface units in the 2030’s as it looks like the world is entering a much more distablized state. @@nate7079 Sorry But I don't buy that. We are not going to war with Russia. Nor is it true that they are our only armed vessels in the arctic. RCN frigates have served on what they call MARLANT missions in the Arctic for decades. The arctic even in summer is very hazardous for submerged submarines so they are not a major threat. And the Ships helicopter provides an ASW capability that is quite effective. Sure some sea sparrows or asroc would be nice but not necessary. Russia only has one carrier and it is not capable of operating in arctic waters. So aircraft as well are not much of a concern except for the opposition. In a pinch, however, the Canadian navy could bolt additional weapons onto the Arctic OPVs’ decks. The latest anti-ship missiles carry their own guidance radars and come in containers that workers can install on almost any reasonable-size warship.

Listen. The old obsolete AOR supply vessels Preserver and Protecteur had a superior self-defense suite & certainly no one expected them to be upon the sharp end either. Using this logic, there's no reason for it not to have one 20mm CIWS Phalanx somewhere midships or aft. Along with its present armaments. That should be it's minimum protection. In wartime one could add missiles of some sort for long range pop. And augmenting heavy machine guns in some kind of weather proof firing turret with NVG.

You figure they're going to be blasting away broadsides at each other like they're Nelson's Oaken Wall? It doesn't make sense for Canada to start an arms race in the Arctic. Whatever gun size we put on our ship, the next guy goes the next size up and so on. That 1" chain gun is perfectly capable of supporting a company of men operating on a shoreline in some tight Northwest Passage waterway. .. "littoral" kzread.info/dash/bejne/m66Elc6ihtDMc6g.html It will not be big enough for another Jutland. The British design for their :Offshore Patrol" ship is the River Class such as HMS Tamar. She is quite a bit smaller, not capable of operation in the Arctic. She can land an Merlin, which is the same size as a Cyclone but there is no hanger. The Canadian Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship and the Royal Navy Offshore Patrol ship have almost identical armament, though. The British ship is equipped with the VERY SLIGHTLY larger 30 mm Bushmaster chain gun and a couple of machine guns, a couple of mini guns. They are both in the same role (outside the Arctic) with almost identical firepower.. If the time ever comes that bigger armament is required on them, their design suggests that they can be "upgunned " to 57 mm without much fiddling. If you need to make them more powerful in a hurry, remember that really big flight deck back aft and put a helicopter on it that has some offensive capabilities..

I agree in part, but in reality it’s the 21st Century and that brings a lethality that requires a match in capability especially from peer adversaries, the 57 is good for patrol vessels and coast guards but in a contested maritime environment where vessels armed with 3 and 5 inch weapons plus their compliment of SSM ASW etc etc then a lightly armed frigate will struggle to survive, the LCD of the USN is a more capable platform than the Halifax frigate that the RCN have. The point is the RCN wants to play with the big boys but on a child’s budget and defense posture, how long is Canada going to rely on the US and allies for their major engagement needs, like carrier strike or amphibious assault capabilities! Can we agree that Canada’s liberal approach to the defense needs of Canada somewhat contribute to that?

I feel this is a great question & apparently Admiral Norman was not impressed either. If it is an artic patrol vessel, why does it have open to air & sea machine gun mounts circa 1941? Doesn't the RCN care about it's gun crew? This vessel rates a 20mm CIWS Phalanx over top its helicopter hangar. And a main deck gun with greater range-greater capabilities. It's only logical to protect costly assets not easily replaced. Inclusive it's worthy of better crew.

There is a very different perspective on experienced and inexperienced in CAF and RCN as well as naval power projections and class designations. This is not an ASW vessel nor an ASuW vessel, there is no reason for those kinds of weaponry on this platform. "Warships" will be armed for war, this is a patrol vessel which is armed to patrol. This ship has made a considerable contributing interdicting numerous real-world drug smugglers and gathering intelligence. They have also rescued SOLAS survivors. Which is exactly what they were designed to do.

hope you have about 40 billion for the nuclear subs and bases that would be required. Yeah you do not understand. Diesel boats are designed to end noisy nuclear subs. A little knowledge would help

Nice design BUT.... Is the HMCS Harry DeWolf a warship or lightly armed Coast Guard patrol vessel? Actually, by all accounts she looks more like an armed explorer yacht. Welcome to Trudeau's navy.

@@garywagner2466 Agreed but once you start looking into the RCN's new ships one wonders about the navy's mission statement. It appears we are again regressing into a humanitarian policing force aka- the 1965 green uniform unification adventure. I would love to better understand the DeWolf's mission. A forward mounted 25mm weapon is hardly offensive by any standard, Her stern and rear quarters appear completely defenceless. This is not a ship one would deliberately put in harms way.Years in design and construction, granted but Justin is at the helm so let him wear it.

@@douglasker9770, these vessels are apparently designed for light patrol duties in moderate ice. I doubt they would be tasked to fight a battle, and I agree they would not survive one. But when was the last naval battle fought in Canadian waters? Naval procurement has been a running joke for many years, as the bureaucrats appear to be in charge and they would have trouble managing a piss up in a brewery. On the positive side, we now have the limited ability to put a vessel or two in the arctic to help control access to the Northwest Passage. That’s long overdue, especially as the Coast Guard has been under-equipped for decades. At least King Justin the Embarrassing didn’t cancel military procurement or disband the navy. Yet.

are they gonna add missles on the ship for defense ???? are they gonna have torpedo on the ship to hunt submarine, its a beautiful shit for coast guard but until they beef up the weapons , its just a search and rescue ship made to patrol the artic , but common russia will laugh at this ship in the north , they will be abile to do circles around this ship, no defense missles or anything wat a waste of tax payers money man, we need destroyes and the new type 26 frigete like the government promised , so we can defend our waters and a few more new nucler submarines would be nice too justin trudeo , our prime minster acts like every other counrty is using fisher price toys lol.

seems to be an excellent ship for the coast guard, but as a Navy ship she is toothless and useless. No offense to the sailors who serve on it but if a shooting war were to break out and you had to defend the country with that, your odds of winning any naval engagement would be 0%

To be fair it is an arctic based vessel so the likelihood of it coming up against an aircraft carrier or a cruiser or something is next to zero, It's role isn't to fight in a naval battle.
