Has anyone tried playing with the pieces face down? Keep all pieces face down except the queen bee. set up the first 4 pieces as normal (without looking at them except the bee) Then turn them over and begin the game. During your turn you may either move one piece, or randomly draw another piece, turn it face up and place it according to the usal rules. Not knowing what bugs are gonna turn up makes for an exiting new way to play!

It would be cool if they did a glow in the dark edition (with new glowworm and firefly pieces!) Or get the starcraft licens from blizzard and make a zerg hive ;-)

I'd like to see Colony pieces added in, if they would manufacture them.

My brother introduced me to this game around the December holidays. My mom just ordered it for me as a surprise I wasn't expecting. I can't wait to have my own set now in a few days. I have a couple of friends that might want to play it with me.

The bee can enter on turn 4 or earlier.

@jamstrat: In tournaments placing the queen bee at the first turn isn’t allowed. That prevents a lot of draws.

@loomingshade39 No... The shapes of the bugs already make it fairly easy to differentiate the pieces one from the other.

You have to play your Queen BY turn 4. The video says before turn 4, which is incorrect, unless then rules changed on me

Just got Hive carbon myself! I thought it would be hard to get a clear strategic view when playing with just black and white pieces, but it works just fine. Had some great games with my brothers, its a steep price, but really worth it, tons of fun!

If anyone wants to try the game before buying a physical copy, it is also available on the apple app store. It's a pretty good port, and includes all the rules except for the ladybug piece.

"The Queen bee must be placed before the fourth turn of the game" The Queen bee can be placed any time from the first to the fourth turn and must be placed on the fourth if not placed earlier.

Hive is a perfect-10 game IMO. I really love the looks of Hive Carbon, but I already have the original and the two expansion pieces. Nice video and good review.

@loomingshade39 nah after you played for a while its easy to tell. but some ppl might prefer a more colorful game, others might like more "chess-like" carbon scheme

Honest naming mix-up @ 10:20 - "so when we move the *beetle..." (ladybug). Otherwise, excellent explanation of an excellent game. I'd totally use this video to show friends/family how to play rather than one of my typical jumble-worded explanations.

Ladybugs are beetles; maybe that's how he got them mixed up. (See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coccinellidae)

7:40 unless the beetle came in from directly above the black spider, black would have won by moving the spider in for the kill :P Hive is a great gateway game into abstract strategy games, but don't stop there! There is a whole micro world of interesting and amazing modern abstracts!

so u cant touch the other color only during the first 4 turns?

  • @michaelbauers8800

You can never place a piece such that it touches the opposite color. A beatle can stack changing the color, an exception of sorts. It's a problem to place too few pieces for this reason. I have seen games lost due to too many moves, you need to balance placing vs. moving

The rule its after the bee comes into play (max at four turn), it remains with the pieces you put into play, but not with the pieces you move

Well, at least i don't need a rulebook now :) When i first saw this on my rss i thought "Wow. Tom decided to review Hive?!". Good review. I'm often thinking about getting this game. Looks like good quick abstract game.

The carbon version has better looks, that's for sure, but doesn't the two colored scheme make the different bugs difficult to discern from each other?

I just randomly found this game on Steam and thought it sounded fun! 10 bucks? 15 for 2 copies? Nice! DLCs that only add very simple additions that brings each game up to 25 dollars each? Nope. Total loss of interest for the digital version... I'm willing to pay a lot more for a nice looking physical version of the game like shown here.

I'm a little disappointed to find out that Carbon has the two expansions. I am currently waiting on my order of the base game. I knew about Carbon before purchasing it, but I only skimmed over the description and thought it was simply a recoloring. The expansions are about $10 each, from what I've seen, and the base game seems to only be about $10 cheaper than Carbon is currently, meaning I lost $10 if I ever decide to get the expansions at their current price.

This game is definitely a keeper. People who are strategists may get frustrated because this game is based on tactics, not strategy. For this reason I think that this game is better described as an abstract tactics game. Also, women always seem to do better at this game and I have no clue why. Carbon is far better than the original because it contains the ladybug and mosquito which both drastically improve gameplay.
