Hitting A Hot Market With 70 Year Old Fir - Oregon Logging

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Some footage here from a recent patch. Beautiful wood, beautiful ground. Very tall fir and the day I moved in it was blowing hard. I was able to backcut my way up the line and tuck out of the wind to get started but the following day it was blowing even harder. I gave it a shot but packed it in early, didn't want the Bull Buck to get growly with me for unnecessary breakage. Give it a watch, let me know what you think. Be safe!

There's really no substitute for good timber that's for sure. Now if it was 70 acres instead of 7 I would have been right in heaven! Are you in the snow now? Good cutting to ya!

Great video! How often do you have to sharpen the blade on that cutter ?

  • @thedailylogger

The teeth are not sharpened but are replaceable and can be rotated so I can use three of the four faces on each tooth as they get dull. One face gets dulled from exposure. It varies a lot on conditions, rocky ground, sandy soil, operator error or the burned units are really hard on teeth. I like to get around 400 hours out of a set as they run between 18 and close to 30 dollars per tooth. 20 teeth on the disc. Sometimes it's considerably less. The set I'm using in this video are some of the speedy ones but I have over 400 hours on and I'm still on the second face so I'm getting good life out of them. Thanks for the question, it's a good one. Appreciate you're interest, be safe!

@@thedailylogger Carpenter by trade but love logging and have a lot of bark beetles kill on my property in the Sierras. I have been heating my home with a woodstove for decades. New law in California won’t allow the sales of chainsaws after June 2022 … I hear Oregon calling me - lol

@@wardmontgomery9259 Copy that! We need you carpenters building for us loggers to keep busy! I heated with wood too for years, it sure is a nice heat. I hadn't heard that California had come up with a bill like that, really makes you wonder what world our duly elected officials are inhabiting. I've always thought that if the end of the world comes I will have at least 5 gallons of mixed gas and enough bar and chain oil to keep the saw going. It's an irreplaceable tool, especially when the going gets tough. Good talking with you, thanks for the interest!

They are building a pine sawmill 90 miles west of us that is supposed to start buying logs sometime this year. They are going to saw 1 million feet of pine lumber daily. Hopefully this market will stay stable.

Holy smokes, that is a big mill! That should put some upward pressure on gatewood prices and demand for you I would think. Peterbilt 89 mentioned that a big pulp mill in your guys area had just scaled way back so I'm glad to hear there is some positive news for you in terms of markets. @@bryans5339 That sounds like a good haul. Did they build a new facility or was it an existing mill? Out here there used to be a mill in almost every town, now we're down to a handful in the whole state. Good luck to you when you get to putting wood in there. Have a good week.
