Born and brought up in Howrah. A graduate of the Scottish Church College, in Calcutta. Pulak Bandyopadhyay was a lyricist and songwriter of Bengali cinema. His family had close links with drama, literature, and music. He experimented with various genres and in the process contributed richly to the evolution of musical compositions in Bengali cinema during the 1960s and 1970s. Many of his songs were written for Bangla movies, tailored to suit “situations” outlined by screenplay writers and directors. The sheer spontaneity of his compositions made him a much sought-after lyricist. some of his songs described as “Bengali Modern Songs” remain as mementoes of a time past in thought and music. His writing style adapted quite naturally to the new ways of expression in the Bengali Music arena. Words tumbled out of Bandyopadhyay’s pen that never thought to be seated at the same table dropped into place just as if they had always belonged. Hemanta Mukherjee and Manna Dey have sung many of Bandyopadhyay’s most popular songs. Pulak Bandyopadhyay’s songs are wrapped in nostalgia for generations of Bangla music lovers.
