In no way am I celebrating the evil ideology behind the Nazis, however, I wish the Reich's Chancellery was still in existence because of its unique design and history. It's sad that some of history's greatest buildings are destroyed in war.

Agree, also the bunker complex would be an awesome museum, perhaps the most visited one in Berlin.

Although Nazi Germany was very bad, but one thing must be left to it. They had amazing fantastic buildings that definitely fascinate me to this day. Those plans for Germania, when I saw the graphics so building buildings in such enclosures is practically impossible but the designs were really fascinating. It just takes your breath away.

I was fascinated by Albert Speer as a youth. When I actually looked at his architecture I found it abhorrent. And I say this as someone who actually enjoys brutalism.

@@redadmiralofvalyria867 I'm going to assume you meant _why do you hate his works?_ I dislike Speer's work because it lacked imagination. It's a neoclassical aesthetic in a monstrous scale. There's nothing new or groundbreaking in its execution, just a projection of the megalomania of the man whose taste it was meant to manifest. And I don't mean Speer himself, but rather, his boss. Speer's real talent lay not in architecture, but rather administration. He was a superb technocrat whose bad fortune (or the world's) was to serve the most heinous regime of the 20th century. To answer your question more succinctly, it was the artless work, not the man himself I disliked.

Such a pity that this architectural marvel was replaced with unsightly pre-fab apartments.

By the general look, it would be very natural to just substitute the swastika by the GDR symbol, keeping the building.

A restoration, assuming it could have been done, would have been worth hundreds of millions, perhaps even billions, in tourist dollars for Germany over these past 70 years...

Unfortunately you left out the Mosaic Room.

You can disagree with the politics, but I'm fairly sure most would agree that this would have been much better on that site than the disgusting prefab estate (though it's not as bad as the ones here in London) that they replaced it with. This is a bit like ISIS destroying ancient sites, artifacts and monuments. It's history, it teaches a lesson; it should remain intact. Frankly, the Soviets were idiotic brutes.

Germany has kept plenty of Nazi artifacts. I think we’ve learned of the lesson that we need to learn. You know as well as I that if this building still stood it would become a place of veneration for neo-Nazis. I mourn that the Nazis tore down the beautiful and historic building that stood in this place beforehand.

A brutal design for a brutal regime, but impressive none the less. I for one wished it had not been destroyed. As a latter day visit would have displayed the absolute megalomania of Hitler x the third reich to future generations. I understand that part of the marble from the building, was used in the repair on a nearby station of the underground railway system.

It remained as rubble till 1966? Is that what she said?

Some of the 3rd Reich architecture wasn't great (the Berghof), but some was outstanding. I saw Templehof airport a few years back, very impressive.

Tried to imitate Ancient Greek architecture, but did not have the finesse and the "keep of meter" that Ancient Greece had Rather approaching Spartan architecture ( the Doric rythm), but even Doric Rythm was elegant However, this was better than hating Ancient Greece
