After 4 years my Hitachi also burned a soft start. I ordered a new one from Amazon, delivered next day, quick and easy installation. The part was about $10. Thanks for the video!!

For anyone seeing this in Feb 2022, DO NOT BUY THE C10JR! The C10JR was completely cheapened when Hitachi was bought by Metabo, and then sold to Venture Capitalists. Non Adjustable Riving knife is a HUGE issue on the Metabo C10 as well as general QC issues all around such as the table flatness, fence flatness, casting errors etc. The soft start feature is amazing, but the failure rate has been high. If you read all the reviews and not just look at the stars you'll find these issues all over. I will miss the soft start and wider legs, but that is all I will miss (I hope)

What is so good about the soft start, does the dewalt trip out power boards or something?

@@ian9toes no the dewalt doesn’t trip any boards for me. It would have a slightly higher chance or tripping on a circuit with higher loads, or it you started the saw and a shop vac at the same time though. Main benefit to me is that it’s a bit quieter, and not as jarring. So let’s say you have a push stick on the other side of the fence to use halfway though your cut, it would have a better chance of staying in place vs jumping off. I’d buy the DeWalt version over and over again. Unfortunately I now own both. My DeWalt came with bad brush guides and brushes. One email to DeWalt and the parts were in my hands two days later. I had multiple problems with my Metabo, and let’s just say instead of them sending me the parts to fix it myself, or just replacing the saw, they asked I drop it at a service center. That service center can’t get Metabo to replace it, and Metabo has been sending them a couple of parts at a time for almost 3 months now. All of my handheld power tools and outdoor power tools are DeWalt and have been for over ten years. Through a complete tear down of a 4 bedroom ranch, to a 1600sqft basement finish, 3 decks, and countless automotive, woodworking, and other DIY projects I’ve had three failures. I also have their 60v line of yard tools. Two they made right within a week, and one I didn’t bother with warranty work because I didn’t use the tool as intended. I got some 10 dollar Chinese knockoff parts to fix it (since amazon would deliver them within 24 hours) and it’s been running for 5+ years. The really amazing thing? Not one battery failure in all of that time. Honestly, I’m amazed.

@@gagegr That is impressive, I’ve got Makita 18v and 40v, and Bosch. Out of 2 40v impact drivers I’ve had 2 failures and needed repair, I don’t know if each failed or one failed twice. I’ve burnt out a grinder in the 18v and a Bosch one. On several occasions tool shop employees have told me that Bosch is the most reliable with very little returns, but for me they’ve been the only one with multiple battery failures.

@@gagegr I ended up getting a sawstop jobsite pro. It’s a good saw and it’s super easy to adjust the height and angle of the blade, compared to the Dewalt which takes 40 turns for full blade height movement. The Dewalt however would be way easier to get an accurate height for a dado for example. For jobsite stuff the sawstop would be easier with one turn but for cabinet type work it’s harder to be accurate. I don’t know why they don’t just gear it to be 2 or 3 turns for full movement. The other main difference is the Sawstop is quite massive, which is both good and bad.

I bought the Metabo as it was on sale for $349.00 and the Dewalt would have been double that with the mobile stand. Since I am fairly new to wood working I could not justify the extra cash just yet...... Oh and I am very happy with the Metabo!

Like everyone else, I bought the Mastercraft/Metabo/Hitachi for an excellent price that there was no way I would ever get on the Dewalt. My first cut on the stock blade that came with it was so smooth, it looked like it came out of my three blade planer. The closest Dewalt in price was the DWE7485 with no stand.

I flipped my riving knife upside down since i dont use the safety guard. I found it to work well. Also, if you weren't aware, there is an access panel that makes it easy to get to the riving knife mount and adjustment screws.

An update about the Metabo / Hitachi - they have changed the gears to metal ones now.

The Hitachi is a great saw. Its only flaw is the removal of the riffing knife. If you are going to use a dado blade. It's a close second to the Dewalt saw. The Dewalt is an all round better saw. I got mine for $70 less than the Hitachi I just lucked out. In my video I explain how to make the riffing knife removable. Hope this helps.

I chose the hitachi because, though I loved the dewalt, over time it had a flaw in the raising/lowering mechanism that was difficult to maintenance

Thanks for your review. It was a toss up between the two saws for me. After watching your video, for the little extra money I am going with the dewalt.

I like the soft start of the Hitachi and I love the brake. For that reason I favour the Hitachi but I'm little concerned about the plastic locking cam assembly.

The riffing knife is easily removable. If you do what I did and you can still use it. I had my saw apart because I had the motor out to troubleshoot the soft start controller. That only cost $10. This saw cost me $600 when I bought it from Mississauga hardware. The Dewalt cost $550. Both saws are still working flawlessly.

Any body who wants to use a dado on there saw. Must get the DWE 7491. Comes with the stand. All other Dewalts wont accept a dado, or the Hitachi c-j10jr comes with a stand as well. Both saws are equal in features.

Don't get me wrong I love this table saw. my biggest complaint is the ripping knife can't be removed. The soft start is cool. But it is what fails on this saw. it costs about $10 for the part. take a picture where all the wires go if you replace it your self. The fence lock is a plastic cam. Don't over adjust it and be gentle with it. I haven't used the Dewalt enough to have any problems yet with it yet. But it doesn't have a soft start to break. the lock on the fence looks better made. the ripping knife is removable. I also paid $500 for the Dewalt. As I paid $599 CDN for the Hitachi.

I have the Metabo saw and there is a way to remove it you just have to remove the plastic panel that is on the right side of the riving knife. The issue I find with it is the lack of adjustment, I think I am going to try arbor shims before I decide to get rid of it.

@@miguelcereceres6977 Never tried. I cut the end out with a cut off wheel on a grinder. You will have to angle the end to catch the ball bearing.

DW7491 is out of stock everywhere.

Hello Hector, Thank you for your video. Ordered mine yesterday, is my first table saw and I am very excited about it! I went for the 36 Volt model, that chan be also plugged to the mains. I am curious about how you troubleshooted the problem with your saw to the soft start component. There was any clear damage to it you could visually identify?

I like the Dewalt better but I can't believe it does not have the feed out support. Seems like a big miss to me.

Thanks for the review Hector. I'm currently trying to decide between these 2 saws. The Hitachi is on sale which makes it over $300- less than the Dewalt. Would you say that the Dewalt is $300- better? I'm a fairly advanced DIY with a house in need of extensive remodeling and repair. Thanks 👍

Hello, Why do the miter gauge slots have their top edges beveled? It seems it is not possible to remove miter guage play using nylon expansion discs due to the beveled edge. Is there any good quality miter guage that can work effectively with the beveled slots?

I don't know but I never had an issue the miter gage with this saw, it is good quality and for fine jobs I use my miter saw. Feather boards fit snug in them so I never had a problem. I don't think the slots are an issue.

Is the DeWalt model DW745, but ypthe DWE7491 mean that it's the combo with the stand? What model is printed on the body of the saw? Also. Can you put a dado in the DeWalt?

This is the only video to have ever made me dizzy...

The Metabo (Hitachi) has a lot of features I want as a non contractor. Just got one for $414.00. If I couldn’t find this deal I would go with the Dewalt.
