Nina von Stauffenberg and her children survived initially because either she or her husband was related to the most famous female test pilot in the Reich (Hanna Reitsch) who took them under her wing. After some months however the police came and took Nina and the children in a truck to the Nordhof train station for transference to a concentration camp. When they arrived the station was completely bombed out where upon they were returned to their residence where somehow they survived to the end of the war.

@Kätzchen Kaktus I think you've got a lot of understanding. You've contemplated Stauffenberg's position with the military perspective of him being sworn in. I was in the army and remember the Oath Of Allegiance quite well. It wears hard with you, you basically abide by it and to the death if needs be. Stauffenberg was a traitor to Hitler but not to his country, there the 50/50 stands correct as you state. Good call on this whole affair.

I’ve always wondered what Von Stauffenberg and his fellow conspirators’ actions would have been had Germany’s military fortunes remained favorable; would there have been a July 20, 1944 assassination attempt on Hitler if Germany had won or was winning the war? It seems that only when Von Stauffenberg and his entourage were convinced Germany was doomed that they fully implemented their plot to kill Hitler, take over the military apparatus, and sue for peace with the allies.

I have seen this part more than 10 times and cried all the time... How human fellows try to get their dignity back and others disregard them... So difficult to watch this amazing movie... One of the few masterpieces with no big lies... My heart cries for all people who died, are dying and will die for being good people... My sincere salute to their soles and their families... Whenever I watch this movie I take a minute of silence to respect the soles we humans lost till now in war... We (Not God) may show ourselves the path of salvation... Amin.

July 20, 1944 That's the date of this fail attempt on Hitler. Month after Allies landing in Normandy, and with Russians in full speed in eastern front. Anyone with braincells left was aware that Germany is going to lose. What those "heroes" as You called them, wanted to achive, was a favorable peace that could have spared Germany unconditional surrender, so they could save some territories they occupied. In that clip is a phrase "we can negotiate a truce with Allies and save Europe from total destruction". That was as I mentioned, 1944, I think we all agree it was way pass "total destruction". Unless You claim this term only applies when land in Germany are included. My point is, they are no heroes, just oportunists, and the fact this movie portray them as some sort of "heroes", doesn't change history facts.

I rather enjoyed this film - very much!!!!! And one of the main reasons was that I was not having to translate from so goofy Hollywood German accent by each actor!!!!!!! I think that anyone that doesn't know that everybody that was portrayed in the entire film was German - a German accent was not really necessary!!!!!! And my only criticism of Tom Cruise is that Staffenberg was actually 6'3" tall - about a foot taller than Cruise!!!!!! Can't be helped - GREAT job!!!!!!!!!!

I thought the accents were all right, given what I read about them trying out German accents. If the actors would have sounded ridiculous trying to speak with German accents (apart from the actor who played von Quirnheim, who was German), it makes sense to me for everyone to stick with their natural accents, so that the dialogue can be easily understood, and the story conveyed. Think of it this way: when Branagh played Hamlet, he didn't use a Danish accent, because we expect to hear Branagh.

Chris lel Beck wounded and blinded himself, then a sergeant in the room was ordered to finish him off with a shot to the back of the neck. He wasn't nursed back to health and then executed, although that may have happened to others involved in the plot (there were at least one or two other officers who tried to shoot themselves when the SS showed up at the door, but botched it and were arrested anyway). In any case, Fromm went against orders and executed the top conspirators as quickly as possible to cover up his own connection with the plot, so he wouldn't have wanted to keep Beck alive any longer than he had to. For all the good it did him.

I think it'd be silly for them to have German accents, might as well just have them speaking German then. They sound a little British but thats just because they're supposed to sound like proper gentlemen.

Most actors who play consipirators in this movie, have almost unbelievable facial similarities to people they play. Virtually, the sole exception is Kenneth Branagh, who bares no reseblance whatsoever to real Henning Von Treskow, who was small and bolding man. Plus, at 42 years of age, Tresckow was almost 20 years younger then Branagh.

It’s not so much that they were anti nazis. They were anti Hitler nazis who wanted to not only make peace with the allies but join forces with the allies to push the soviets back. The belief was that if Germany could concentrate her resources on the eastern front they could beat the Russians. While the German military resistance was partially inspired out of disgust of the final solution, it was mostly out of strategic necessity.

"Anti-Nazi" "resistance" "hero" von Stauffenberg (from 1939 letter to wife): "Locals are unbelievable rabble, so many Jews and cross-breeds. One can smell extraordinary misery around. It's a nation, which needs a lash to feel comfortable, visibly it needs a lash. Thousands of prisoners will help to develop our agriculture. Germans might benefit, because they [Poles and Jews] are attentive, hard-working and undemanding."

+Krister Andersson Not really; it's true there was an anti-hitler sentiment within the Wehrmacht , starting from Field Marshal Rommel down to Von Tresckow; not everyone was a staunch nazi, moaning about fuhrer-prinzip wasn't exactly recommended. Rommel for instance wanted Hitler to be arrested and brought on trial. Von Stauffenberg nevertheless was a conservative yet couldn't stomach Hitler, sure thing he wasn't a communist :)
