Welsh is actually far more straightforward and phonetic compared to both English and French. Problem is that Welsh is an old language and has a myriad of sounds that you don't hear in far more commonly spoken languages. The hardest part is being able to make some of the unique sounds in welsh; once you know the sounds of each 'Letter', sounding out words and places becomes a lot easier. Where y can occasionally act like a vowel in english, both W and Y are vowels and extremely commonly used in Welsh. On top of that 'Ll' 'Ph' 'Ng' 'Ch' 'Dd' 'Ff' 'Rh' 'Th' are individual 'letters' with distinct sounds. We also don't use the following letters unless it's something modern and can't be translated properly; K, Q, V, X and Z. A bit of an info dump, but that's why Welsh looks so weird to those unaccustomed to seeing it.
