    My Grandfather served in the Danish Army in Southern Jutland on 9 April 1940 during the German invasion. "Luckily" for him and his company, they had been forbidden to prepare defensive positions or even hold maneuvers near the border, so they were completely blind. They were a motorized company and apparently they got lost, so the commanding officer halted the column, ordered a five minute break to smoke, while he went across the road to ask a farmer for directions. It would just so happen that the farmer's pretty daughter was out, too, so 150 soldiers left the trucks and crossed the road to admire the female specimen, leaving all their weapons in the trucks. Of course, when they were smoking away, the vanguard of the German advance column showed up, a pair of motorcycles with Mg34 sidecars. They just halted, charged their guns and smiled. Not one moved and an entire company was captured without a single shot fired. Which was wise. Had one been stupid and done the Hollywood thing and made a dash for the weapons, the casualty list for that day would have been many times bigger. So, "luckily" for my grandfather, the neutrality policy meant he never got to fight that day, he would do that later in the resistance. But he carried a Krag Jørgensen carbine during his service. Like this one. Thank you for showing it.

    So Mae gave the long rifle the softest of yeses, while Othais fell in love with the carbine. I wonder what kind of review the Norwegian 1912 is going to get - it's shorter and handier than the long rifle, has a thicker barrel than the 1894, nice tangent sights, a turned-down bolt handle, a full-length stock with finger grooves and a semi-pistol grip, its loading gate opens to the side and it's chambered for the lovely 6.5x55 rimless... Plus it has the signature buttery smoothness of a Krag action. Really looking forward to that episode.

    After WW2 the Krag-Jørgensen M/1889/10 was more or less only used by the Kongelige Livgarde (Royal Household Lifeguard). Most Krag-Jørgensen pattern rifles & carbines had been stolen by the Germans for second line duties of all sorts. To get going again Danmark used Gevær M/45/96S (Swedish Mauser 6.5x55mm) brought home by the Danish Brigade in Sweden and Gevær M/45E (Lee Enfield No4 .303 British) either dropped by parachute during the war or bought from Britsh surplus. All was replaced by Gevær M/50 (M1 Garand) when we joined NATO as one of the original members. Danmark did not adobt another carbine before we got the Karabin M/96 (Diemarco (Colt Canada) C7) - basically an M4.

    Sweet rifles! I have a weakness for the US Krag carbines ( nothing competes with my appreciation of Winchester 1895 carbines, though!). I can’t help but speculate that the Krag magazine would have been a valuable feature for scoped military rifles, particularly if used with chargers. No more concerns with obstructing the charger or clip guides by center line of the scope, and easy topping off the magazine with individual loose rounds as the sharpshooter or sniper plies his trade.

    Oh, my. I thought it was comical that the guards in Hogan's Heros carried Krags. And now Othias says the Germans confiscated them for second line duty - like a POW camp?

  • @sidekickbob7227

    @sidekickbob7227

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes. Second line duty forces often used non German weapons. There's even pictures of German SS guard troops using Mosin-Nagants rifle in theire slavecamps in Poland. In Norway they often equipped the guards with the M94 Krag Jørgensen. It all makes sense, since you could arm a lot of more soldiers, and still avoid the logistic problem of having different sort of ammunition at the front. All they had to do, was to give some rounds with each rifle, and the guard could fullfill his duty for years...

    dont forget we already where poor when we lost Slesvig-Holstein/ Slesvig-Holsten. We had lost Norway in 1814 50 years earlyer. and our entire navy a few years before that.

    @@stalker1983 Being poor is relative thing indeed. Danes history is little like Dutch. Merchantile minded regional superpowers in times past. Rise of nationalism in bigger countries overcame eventually. Among Fennoscandian countries Danes were/are exceedingly wealthy. All the butter and bacon imaginable, compared to rocky soil only good for rye here in north. And one cow which was dry 9 months of year.

    I really like the Krags. Believe it or not, my local Cabelas had one in the gun library last year. I got to handle it and I thought the loading gate was sweet- it had the more traditional fold down gate rather than the forward folding wacky one like the Danes.
