History of the iPod Classic

Ғылым және технология

The beginning of the iPod Classic line actually dates back to the original iPod released in 2001. Now at this time, Apple was still enjoying the success of their iMac and was looking to follow it up with another hit product, and they put their money on the iPod. A device that was miles ahead of any other music player on the market.
And that's part of the reason why Apple decided to release a portable music player, they saw a huge gap in the industry and recognized it was ripe for disruption. Now I should mention that the first generation iPod wasn’t actually called the iPod classic. It wasn’t until the last generation when Apple finally gave the iPod line the Classic suffix. Now there are a total of six generations of iPod Classic, including several special edition models. And despite the design and functionality differences of every generation, they all had one thing in common - a 1.8 inch hard drive that was incredibly thin and compact. And it was this component that allowed for the first iPod model to be created, because up to that point, there hadn’t been a high-capacity hard drive small enough to fit inside a pocketable device. So the original iPod’s hard drive had a capacity of 5GB, or about 1,000 songs. And we’re going to find out how the iPod went from 1,000 songs in your pocket in 2001, to 32,000 songs in your pocket by 2007.

For all my disappointment with apple over recent years, the iPod classic will stand as probably my favourite apple device. Simple and direct music listening, with plenty of space. Was a real shame it was discontinued. I was lucky enough to find one someone had thrown out in great condition recently and it was so refreshing to go back to a much more basic device where I could really just be with my music and my entire music catalogue at that. On that note, iTunes will stand for me as the greatest music organiser ever. Other programs don't come close and trying to get your muddled up library on to an Android device is so difficult. I'm glad I still have my iPod to rely on.

I miss the day you could just press a button to get to the next song without having to get a huge phone, unlock, open a app and touch the screen. I mean, even the music app in the new iPod is gargabe because is basically the Apple Music app with ads asking you for subscriptions.

I bought my classic in 07. I still have it till this day but it can barely last more than an hour but god this thing got me through some tough times. I moved to another state on my own, went from living in my parents house to living in a studio apartment in a new town with no family or friends. My ipod and my ps2 (no tv for 6 months) were the only things I owned. Now I have house, kids, married and several devices that play music...still the classic will always hold a special place in my memory.

I remember when I bought my first iPod in 2004, I was totally stunned by it, it was unbelievable how I could “have” all my CDs with me, make the playlists and quickly change between albums and artists. Then I got a video iPod in 2007 and, again, it was a blast! I remember transferring my South Park episodes to the iPod and being able to watch them while on bus and train rides. Just like the iPhone changed the mobile phones forever, the iPod changed how we listen to music since it was launched. What an amazing device!

Promezio you do realize that even with the high quality DAC chip if you use Bluetooth, the quality will be highly reduced. However...in my glove box was my entire music collection. My music got me though the toughest time in my life and it was a shame to have to put it in my current display case as the battery is now dead. I'm still listening to my 60GB 5th gen iPod nearly 20 years later. I've had MBP and other Apple hardware, but nothing compares to the 5th gen iPod. It is one of the absolute best hardware interfaces that Apple has ever produced. I'm terrified to plug it into a computer, but I had it maxed out on songs, so it will forever house that music and the many playlists from all my house parties. I have no idea why, but I used dates in my party playlist names, so I still know the exact parties and people I was around for each, and some of those friends are no longer here (RIP), which makes those memories a bit extra special.

Because streaming music doesn’t sound as good, and not to mention you have to always have an internet connection to listen to anything, while draining your phone battery and also having interruptions from text messages/ in coming calls/ notifications and what not, just because something is new doesn’t mean it’s better. The chips they used in these older iPods sound better than any iPod touch or any iPhone, these are facts, and that’s why these older iPods are sought after. And using these older iPods are not really any less convenient then streaming on your phone.

I got myself the 5th gen iPod Classic as a Christmas present to myself from myself December 2023. I had looked at iPod Classics on Ebay and couldn’t quite make up my mind on what model I wanted and I looked at prices so I held off for awhile. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon a black iPod classic 5th gen on Ebay and picked it. The iPod’s back says 30 gb but was not only upgraded to 128 gb but has a new battery in it so I got the iPod. It came on December 23rd, two days before Christmas thus making it perfect timing. I decorated my iPod with a bright pink skin and got four clear cases decorated in puffy Pusheen Cat stickers thus dubbing my iPod as the Pusheenpod.

You for got the 7th generation iPod. I've had 5 Classics and love them. I just ordered a new one thru eBay; it was brand new. I have a huge iTunes library with music but more important over 1500 podcasts which drop automatically. I had to call Apple as to how to get it to sync but the gal with whom I spoke took her time and all worked. We forgot to sync the music but I was able to figure that out. Plus the podcasts would not stop, i.e., another episode followed. Did research and found the answer from a teckie. There are people like me who think the Classic is the way to go. Plus the sound is outstanding.

I have the updated 6th gen version that has 160gb of storage. I bought it in Jan 2014, 8 months before Apple would discontinue the thing. If I had known at the time they would discontinue them, I would have bought 3 of them. They were 250 each and the only place I was able to get them was either apple.com or their store. Regular electronic stores stopped carrying them months ago. I still have my 160gb ipod, it still works and I still use it even after almost 5 years of owning it. My moms has one too and she still uses hers. I also have a 5th gen ipod touch 64gb and an ipad pro 10.5 with 256gb. If this ipod classic breaks I will try and replace the parts.

I have my last generation iPod Classic for almost 10 yrs now. It still works gloriously. It's been in a rubber iPod case and I only dropped it 2X, from pocket to floor. It's only coming up on 2/3 full. Nothing on the market after it was discontinued I think in 2015. A shame Apple did that. I have a 5th gen Nano too. The classic has richer sound than the flash based Nano and all smartphones. I love that lil iPod Classic so much I bought a back up, refurbished one. I also have a Bose docking speaker in the house and an 11 speaker Bose system in my car. Nothing beats the sound, no commercials or subscription fees for lesser sound.

Just recently bought one actually, 6th gen 80GB w/new battery. What led me to buy one is I noticed when I listen to music on my phone or laptop, I tend to get distracted with notifications or say "Oh I'll just real quick check my email" and it leads to a rabbit hole of checking social media, etc. most of the time. It's nice to have a dedicated music player again, one where you can just sit back, close your eyes and get lost in the music without any distractions. I think if Apple reintroduced the Classic with larger storage, an SSD or Flash memory, bluetooth support for wireless headphones/speakers and add streaming service support for Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, etc. I think it could potentially be a viable product in this day and age, I'd surely buy one.

I stumbled along with 4-16GB MP3 players from Sansa and Philips, until I found a 4G iPod (20GB) on eBay. I finally had a reason to use iTunes on the AlBook, ripping my CDs at 192KB/sec. My current unit is an iPod Touch (32GB), which does a bit more than the iPod Classic.

Perhaps the most expensive iPod product I've ever owned (aside from the iPod touch models I've owned which were pretty close to that price.) Granted I stream my music through Apple Music but I still have a backlog of over 3,000 songs from iTunes Store purchases over the last fifteen years. I may have Apple Music but for some artists, I want their entire album, sometimes even the actual physical CD itself (which involves hooking up another ancient piece of technology, an external CD drive). This iPod makes perfect sense then. I love my iPhone, I love my iPad, but I really loved the iPod line.
