    A few years before I started at Glasgow University, the Games Society occasionally ran a Talisman themed pub crawl. Essentially, players split into teams and gain 'xp' by defeating monsters (pints of beer or cider) or spirits, and lose lives by vomiting. The goal towards the end of the night being to enter the 'Dragon's Tower' (the Strathclyde University Union on John Street, which had obtained an extra 5 mazzanine levels by chicanery when the adjoining James Weir building was expanded in the 70's), and conqeur some more booze. At this point, many of the mechanisms by which some characters gained extra points for the team are... questionable. Orcs and goblins maybe aren't so bad (befriend a wolf/rescue a shopping trolley from the Kelvin); the Barbarian, being fearless, was always obliged ordered a pint and a chaser every round, which doesn't seem like it would be encouraged these days; the troll could score points by vomiting; in theory, anyone could gain points by acquiring 'the princess' as a follower (don't think that needs explaining, but it does say a lot about the assumptions that were made about their membership); the assassin had to acquire a packet of Smarties and attempt to 'poison' other players... you can imagine that would go down like a lead ballon.

    The dangerous and inebriating games of a miss-spent university education - I know that well. Sounds like it was quite a time, glad that some of the dodgier stuff has since been rethought, but the rest sounds pretty inventive!

    I have Relic and 4th edition Talisman with the Dragon and 4 "corner" expansions aswell as Harbinger, Bloodmoon and Firelands. It certainly can be random: During our first playtrough we had one player draw the Magic stream card and Fountain of wisdom on his next turn and spent his turns going between the two of them gaining strenght and craft every turn.

    @@jordansorcery My guess is that untill then Talisman had been primarily fantasy based and Talisman fans didn't care for the grim dark sci-fi, of 40K and 40k players need all their money for their armies and codexes and paint and... Either that or, as the two games were in production at the same time they sorta cannibalised each other and people didn't think they needed to own both. What I found interesting was the Adepta Sororita bust was the first new Sisters of Battle model released in decades.

    @@jordansorcery The closest game is probably Fantasy AGE mechanically as both are 3d6 with one die being special. The cool thing about Talisman Adventures is that it's mostly player facing. NPCs never roll to attack. Players roll to attack and if they fail they are hit by the enemy and if they get a basic success (hitting the enemy's threat rating, but not rolling any doubles) they hit the enemy, but the enemy hits them for a weak hit. Any enemies that were not engaged attack and the player makes a defense roll which works the same as the player's attack, bit the player can't do damage on a success. The coolest thing is that an enemy who is engaged multiple times a turn by different players gets multiple chances to counter attack so players are disincentivized from dog piling monsters like in other TTRPGs, allowing for each PC to have their cinimatic one on one with a monster, or a single boss to not be screwed into uselessness by action economy.

    Great video. I first played 2nd edition with a friend and memories of that prompted me to buy the 3rd edition and expansions back in the day. I still have it (except for the Tower - BGG has a 2d substitute) I also got all the expansions for the digitial edition of 4th edition Talisman a few years back. You may not be aware, but there were a number of diigital exclusive expansions for 4th edition including The Clockwork Kingdom Expansion combine elements to make super weapons The Ancient Beasts Expansion Rules for 8 gigantic monsters (some stalking) that have different powers and end of game conditions. The Realm of Souls Expansion If killed enter the realm of souls to recover with new followers, items and end conditions. I think the problem of too long games can be solved for the physical game at least by starting with double craft and strength and gold. My two coins.

    Fun story: Back in the 90's my buddy had the second edition with an expansion or two that we played all the time here in the US. He lost a few pieces, reached out to Games Workshop to see if they could replace them, and they said of course, no problem. What my friend got instead was an entire box full of expansions and other insane goodies, many of which he has gifted to me and all live in a heavily-used original set of boxes. The fact that they did all of that for free has always put them in a high place in my memory so not only did they crank out fun stuff, but they were pretty damn good to their fans.

    The RPG is currently available for free on Drivethru and Pegasus Digital (essentially the same, since it's "Powered by OneBookShelf"). Comments there also clarify that while Pegasus has lost the rights for the boardgame, they will still continue the RPG. I have somewhat mixed feelings about Talisman. On hand one, I want to like it, but it seems to have too much RNG and sessions can drag on forever, making it kinda like a fantasy Monopoly. But I've only played the game solo on Steam, it might be better with other people.

  • @jordansorcery

    @jordansorcery

    I didn’t know that about the RPG, thanks for sharing! I share some of those feelings about the board game, the Monopoly comparison seems apt. Though like Monopoly the game can be a great way to get people together in a way that levels the playing field - it removes too much mental load or strategic play in favour of an excuse to laugh and chat along with friends! So I like it for that at least!

    Picked up the 3e cheap from a local sale missing a few insignificant parts (sorry Wood Elf) with the Dungeon and City expansions. I think I have a few of the characters from the Dragon Tower, another I bought went MIA in the mail.... Originally just bought it to steal the minis for HQ or Advanced Heroquest homebrews but ended up playing it with the kiddos. It's a fun game, but I think it's funny you say 3e is meant to be streamlined and NOT take hours, maybe we were playing wrong but I don't think we have ever properly finished a game because they have always dragged on way beyond the limits of everyone's ADHD lol, maybe I need to ditch the expansions next time. I've tried to print my own dragon tower but can never get the dimensions right, and end up with one sides dimensions bigger than the others and nothing fits together correctly haha, I'll try again one day, I already have the oldhammer Azhag the Slaughter Wyvern rider, which is pretty much the same dragon once I give Azhag the flick (although all my poor oldhammer is in dire need of repair right now after being neglected through a few house moves, I opened them up last week and saw a bunch of sad loose metal heads and arms looking up at me)

  • @jordansorcery

    Azhag is a great proxy! They re-used the Talisman for Arsanil the Dogs of War elf lord as well, though that's not much easier to get hold of than the original now! I think even with the 3rd ed streamlining the game was still very much a Talisman game, i.e. one in which an unlucky combination of rolls and choices could just grant the game eternal life with no winner!

    This two parter was great and crazy to think how it keeps getting a fresh life with the different settings. So just to understand, (and I was building model while watching) GW still own the game and just license it out after all this time? I only knew about the 3rd edition with the minis and so didn't know about its past and what it has become. A friend years ago said did I use to play it and I said no, but when I described the 3rd edition she looked at me like I had just come from another world. I love the references to the other videos and it feels like it is all coming together!

  • @jordansorcery

    @jordansorcery

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks! That's right, the Talisman game is still owned by GW, but they have licensed it out to FFG and Pegasus Spiele in recent years for them to produce the most recent versions. I'm guessing it was because GW don't really publish traditional board games these days so didn't want to do it themselves. That said, I didn't realise it when recording the video, but apparently the deal with Pegasus Spiele came to an end in late 2021, but hasn't been talked about much or replaced. That's why the Revised 4th ed base game is increasingly difficult to get hold of now. I'd expect GW to find another publishing partner sooner or later though, they won't want Talisman off the shelves for long!

    Pegasus Spiele lost the license for Talisman the board game, that is why expansions can be difficult to find (at least in Europe) . But I have not seen any official news about it. Great "history of" videos 👍👏

It always felt too random and just, I dunno... almost Monopoly-like. Oddly enough, I tried and absolutely loved Relic, to the point that I ended up buying the game itself and both expansions. The dice mitigation mechanics, amazing production values, and the overall flow of the adventure just felt a lot more natural.
