History of Soulsborne Games

Ойындар

To celebrate the launch of From Software's Elden Ring, we chart the history of the Soulsborne games, from the early success of Demon's Souls and breakout hit Dark Souls, as well as its sequels, to Bloodborne, a spin-off that is regarded as one of the best games ever made, and Elden Ring, a collaboration between Hidetaka Miyakazi and George R. R. Martin. #eldenring
It’s hard to overstate the impact From Software has had on gaming. From birthing its own genre to acting as the inspiration for countless developers, the studio’s games have not only left their mark on how games are designed but also how players interact with them. To celebrate the release of the studio’s latest title, Elden Ring, here’s the history of Soulsborne games.
In the above video, we chart the history of From Software, and how Hidetaka Miyazaki took its games in bold new directions. Beginning with King's Field, the spiritual predecessor to the Souls games and then charting the course of the series from there. We also take an in-depth look at the creation of Demon's Souls and the daring ideas that Miyakazi brought to the game, which Sony deemed too difficult, and bombed at release, before coming a cult hit in the West. From there, we take a look at the enormous success of Dark Souls, Dark Souls II, and Dark Souls III, and the communities that sprung up to mine every last secret from the games. While we don't linger too long on Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, as it's not typically considered a Soulsborne game, we do delve into Bloodborne, and chart the evolution of From Software's approach to game design and how it's changed over the years in the lead up to Elden Ring.
Elden Ring launches on February 25, 2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. For more on the game, including our review, make sure to subscribe to GameSpot.

I still remember beating Genichiro after hours of trying and how the game clicked for me after that. Ishin, the fire demon, lady butterfly, Owl... all of them were great bosses in their own right too. I'd go so far as to say that no Dark Souls boss, not even Artorias or Dancer or Sulyvhan, had as great an impact on me as Genichiro.

It is 100% a souls game, it shares a huge amount of the series’ DNA and should have definitely been included in this list. Many souls purists found it too hard and don’t want to include as a “souls” title, but I think that’s a ridiculous take. There’s so much in common it’s unreal.

I completely understand if they are your faves, and yeah dark souls 3 has the best bosses but Demon's souls has the best level design, music, lore, and story easily.

I can see both sides to the Sekiro argument - it doesn't have a deep RPG system but in most other ways it is souls through and through. The level designs, meditation points, respawning enemies, vague story, incredibly stunning and difficult but fair boss fights. It is literally a bunch of the things that make their previous games so good with extra things added in like stealth and posture bar. It is a great game, and absolutely a soulsborne. Also, Elden Ring is 10/10 a masterpiece and the culmination and evolution of all Fromsoft's previous experience.

What people don't realize about Sekiro is that it was as much of an evolution of the Souls series as Bloodbourne was. From can't put out the same game over and over and expect to be praised for it. Games need to keep what is good and go into new, creative explorations. Sekiro did this and was a huge success. Most souls fans who played it and disliked it thought that you had to play it like a Souls game instead of actually learning how to play the actual game and - to take a page out of their own notes - GET GUD. Sekiro has the best combat out of any of the games, and the art direction was incredible. I hope we can get a Sekiro 2 one day. I look forward to a Sekiro sequel or some other even more different soulsbourne evolution than I do a new Souls or bloodbourne sequel.

One thing that I feel soul fans don’t realize is the first thing to define the dark fantasy genre. That being the berserk manga. If it wasn’t for berserk, dark souls probably wouldn’t even be a thing. Like there’s a lot of berserk references from the soulsborne games. Now berserk isn’t just a great dark fantasy story it’s one of the greatest stories of all time. For me, it’s my favorite thing ever. On the outside, it’s a really gory and very edgy story with some of the nightmarish imagery you can find anywhere. But deep down, berserk is about life, it’s about overcoming your obstacles in life. Guts was able to find beauty in a world that he really shouldn’t have. I can’t think of any other way to describe this tale other than… Beautiful. So please PLEASE read berserk.

It is definitely not a soulsborne game. It is a fun action game, but it is no RPG like the souls games. There is no customization or character building in Sekiro, which are very important elements for a soulsborne game. You basically play as a Samurai, and stays as a Samurai throughout the whole game. The whole point of a Soulsborne game is to customize your character and play with different builds. Miyazaki himself said multiple times back in 2019 that Sekiro is not a sucessor to the Soulsborne , it is just a different game. Comparing Sekiro with a soulsborne game is like comparing a Mario game to a Zelda game: same studio, same love, even some people work on both games, but completely different genres.
