History of San Luis Obispo, California |
The second Project Homecoming playlist: • Project Homecoming 2
San Luis Obispo, or SLO for short, is a small city near and dear to my heart, not only because it's one of my hometowns, but because I've done so much work on the history here. After all, my dissertation has a chapter on it and my entire masters thesis is about the place. And it goes much deeper than that, for my father was a museum director here. You could say SLO's history is in my veins.
My previous video this is derived from: • What makes something h...

It's so heartwarming to see you using your KZread fame to help other local historians make their mark and maybe jump start their careers. (Yes that was a joke)

He could end up on TV some day with that talent
I live in SLO, and I can’t believe that the beard of knowlege was so involved in the community. Crazy.
Finding out who your father is blew my mind. But it makes sense and explains your desire, indepth knowledge, and storytelling ability. It may take me a while to digest this one, I would never have guessed. This made my day. ❤
Great video. I'm local to the SLO area. Please do a video on San Juan Capistrano that's along the same vein. They are very much sister villages based on their earliest history.
I didn't know much about SLO, but both of your videos about the city's history are very informative and I learned a lot. It's also awesome how your dad narrated this one too. Hope you have a great weekend! Take care, Cypher.
Looking forward to playing through the whole playlist!
I was born there too, although I didn't have the income to go to Cal Poly. Thanks for helping to keep the history of this strange little town alive
Watching this video in San Luis Obispo. Great work!
It's a cool little city. I look forward to visiting one day.

You should downtown is always crowded though. Bike lanes can cause traffic but other than that it's beautiful
History runs through your veins (I bet you've never heard that one before). Wicked cool that you got your dad to narrate for you, I bet he was a helpful resource when doing your thesis on the local history too

Absolutely. I regularly called him with questions about local history when writing the thesis. He also proof read my dissertation
I have not yet had the opportunity/money to visit California, but perhaps some day. Thank you for hosting the collaboration playlist!
Born and raised in Soledad, my parents were caretakers of the Soledad mission before I left for the Air Force :)
Born in Morro Bay, glad you're representing our county!
As a Santa Barbarian, did not know that the tri-county area had any semi famous KZreadrs, but low and behold
Immensely enjoy your wide array of videos and by fact-checking your citing sources admire their accuracy. One issue I have is while I appreciate the fast pace of your videos, at times I struggle to fully read and digest the quotes and statements presented because of the fast pace. To point, I consider myself a fairly fast reader who can finish a couple average sized books a week and still have time to sustain a healthy lifestyle of eating, sleeping, and watching NFL football, although sometimes concurrently. Anyway, thanks for the very enlightening content.
Your dad is the genius who knew everything on Pawn Stars?!?!?!?!?!
Wtf another human who knows where SLO is??? Bro my moms gallery was across the creeek from the mission for like 15 years! She started at the old creamery when we were kids! I got my 2 AA's from cuesta last fall. Wild to see anyone let alone a big history tuber know the area. Also incredibly cool that you carried on the tradition in your family of studying and documenting the local history.
My grandpa was born in Paso Robles and my grandma was born in Templeton CA. U have long history maybe more than lots it was way different than it is now. Good video thank you.
Thanks for this history. My dad graduated from Cal Poly in the 50s.
Great video! Glad to see Mark being productive in retirement and on the Internet.
I love your dad's voice, please let him do some of the speeches and quotes, his vouce really sets the mood
would love to see more content from your dad on the channel, great stuff!
Well, that's a cool surprise. I've been watching your videos for a while but had no idea you were from SLO. I grew up in Los Osos.
its so funny to see the guy I remember from watching pawn stars as a kid is your dad. small world :)
Been waiting for this! Do Humboldt county please
I would like to go back to SLO some day.
This is so cool! I didnt know you were a fellow mustang! I really appreciated learning about more where I currently live
Holy crap your the son of the PawnStars History Guy
SLO is beautiful!!!
oh wow. i might have met your dad a couple of times while growing up in the area
Cool I went to colleged there
Great work Cypher, but as a Santa Marian I find it questionable that you’re claiming strawberries but especially tri-tip for SLO. Really? Tri-tip? It’s called Santa Maria style barbecue for a reason!
@CynicalHistorian

It's the entire central coast. Santa Maria didn't exist when all that started, so y'all definitely have no special claim to it

@@CynicalHistorian tri-tip wasn’t called such until the 1950’s, and Santa Maria existed then, and a Santa Maria Safeway owner started selling it as tri-tip. Others have made the same claim, again the 1950s, as far north as Oakland. Kind of like the two shops in LA that claim they invented the French Dip. In regards to tri-tip, If you’re talking about spit roasting, which was done by the vaqueros here for hundreds of years (some are my ancestors), then sure, you’re right, but that ain’t tri-tip. Santa Maria definitely has a special claim to tri-tip.

Do you recommend any good books for someone first getting into SLO history? 1800s- early 1900s SLO?

Dan's book, linked in the description, is still the best starting point
I ran track there in the late 60s, was pretty good, I tell people I was the fastest runner at SLO High. I rarely call the town SLO and prefer to call it San Luis Obispo as should you. It was tough job growing up there but somebody had to.
a dozen people from my high school, that I know of, went to SLO for Univ., from San Jose, I went to UCSD.
Your dad is the Beard of Knowledge???
The best strawberries are grown in quadalupe
Does your dad still work this job?

Do you mean a director of museums? He retired in 2021. If you meant SLO specifically, we moved in 1994
It’s slow in SLO 🐢🐢🐢
