    Ashok Leyland Vehicles are the Emperors on Indian roads. The main features of leyland vehicles are It is super for rough driving Condition (rough use) It is better for hill climbing than other trucks. We use only leyland on ghatt areas very less maintanance for engine of leyland trucks and the sound of the engine is excelent All these reason Ashok leyland vehicles became very close relatives of Indian people We Indians Salute you ASHOK LEYLAND for the great service yo have given Thank you Thank you Thank you A leyland lover from Arpookara Kottayam - kerala - India

    In the mid 80's, I was driving a Leyland T45 , 4x2 sleeper cab with a 365 Cummins and a 13 speed fuller. It was a brilliant truck, loved it. I was as sick as a dog when my then boss , sold it and bought a 111 Scania, what a bloody let down. The scania wasn't a patch on the T45.

    The brand British Leyland has become a history in UK, but its legacy will live on in India for many years to come. It stills controls 70% of India's bus market demands till date. New concepts like power stirring, multi axel trucks, double decker and vestibule buses were all introduced for the first time by Leyland in India.

    Thank you. Wonderful History. I remember going to school in a small town in south india in a ashok leyland bus. Their engine sound is so unique even to this day.

    I am from India. Comet used to be a workhorse throughout the 1980s . These were excellent trucks with their cowl chassis. Viking used to be another illustrative model used by state transport organization for double decker buses. The engine sound was superb. Though lelyand launched multi axle trailers, in 1980s however they were late to capture the heavy coal mining overburden haulage, combined mode market through the rigid dump trucks, where volvo and scania pitched in. To recapture the market the company has launched its hhp rigid dump trucks in that segment.

    Very good rundown. Leyland's main rival for decades was AEC, which they took over in 1962 and you briefly mentioned with the roadtrain. They were a very important British manufacturer who acquired other truck makers themselves and developed the famous London Routemaster red double decker bus that remained in service from 1956 until 2005. The TL 12 engine used in the 1980s Leyland T45 truck for three years into it's production, was a turbo charged version of AEC's AV 760 diesel engine, so it's engineering lived on a short time after the AEC nameplate's 1977 demise and it's Southall London factory closure in 1979.

    Let us not forget the famous engines built by Leyland and used under licence in the Pegaso, Sisu and DAF trucks well before the merger. And their Canadian operation albeit for a short time. Leyland Beavers, Super Beavers and Hippos were assembled in Israel by Leyland-Ashdod, Ltd and sometimes fitted with locally produced cabs of fiberglass.

    Partial truth, partial bullshit. The main problem was *inept management* which designed and approved hopeless products already outdated when released, and with loads of built-in faults. The proof is to be found in the subsequent incarnations of British Leyland: they all failed long after the absurdly militant Unions were tamed and brought back to reason. The Phoenix fraudsters were the last nail in the coffin: they raked in millions and then left everyone else high and dry.

There were Leyland trolley 🚎 buses exported,and some actually wound up in Montreal,and a couplevof Canadian cities,another sideline,not always noted! Thank you for making this video. A couple of points. The Factory in Surrey was at Kingston on THAMES, not pronouced THINES. Major error, there is mention of the Egonomic cab design, designed by AEC at Southall. AEC was part of ACV group Associated Commercial Vehicles, which included Crossely Motors of Manchester & Park Royal bodyworks in West London. Leyland brought the ACV group in 1964. 1968 saw Leyland buying a 50% stake in both Bristol Commercial Vehicles & the Eastern Coach Works (ECW) which had been STATE owned from 1948. The other 50% share was owned by The Transport Holding company, which took overt the Tilling & British Electric Traction bus companies which then formed the STATE owned National Bus Company.

  • @tonybarfield5148

    @tonybarfield5148

    Small error on my part ACV group was brought by Leyland in 1962. This included the bodyworks in Leeds of Charles H Roe. Another error by me, no one is perfect. Leyland brought a 25% holding in Bristol Commercial Vehicles (BCV) and Eastern Coach Works (ECW) in 1965, both being before this time STATE owned and unable to sell their products on the open market. Leyland Marathon was the last lorry type built at the former AEC works at Southall, West London. The factory was also still building the AEC Reliance coach chassis too, but Leyland closed the factory in 1979.

    Leyland motors built the Centurion main battle tank, one of the most successful tanks, the IDF will attest to it as the Tank that won the 1973 Golan Heights battles against the invading Syrian army T-55, T-62 Tanks in the Golan Heights...

    Great video, I am a big leyland fan. Please tell the narrator to try to change intonation to raise voice less at the end of the sentence. Despite British leyland’s bad reputation, they made some good motors.

    I started driving heavy trucks with T45's they were never as good as other brands I also drove, M-B, MAN, Daf and for me the best, Volvo & Scania. However the little Roadrunner was a great drive with Cummins power.

    Thank you. Super Film... Leyland lorries from Leyland Lancashire were exported to all corners of the world....At Leyland now is just a Daf cab interior fitting out line... The vehicles arrive from Holland on specially made De Rooy transport lorries... Then ship back to Holland or sold in England.. Sad as The UK do not make any lorries... Let's All Keep On Trucking Along The Highway of Life.... Bravo for Super Jack's Chrome Shop...44 Tonnes of Thanks..... Douglas Vick. Old School(very) International Lorry Driver. Cheltenham Spa U. Leyland trucks currently fully assemble all DAF models 5 days a weeks, Eindhoven (Holland) do not produce the LF model range which are made at Leyland Assembly Plant and shipped around the world, De Rooy do however ship the cabs from Holland for the CF and XF model ranges and Renault France for the LF model to LAP.

    No mention of the big Leyland long bonnet body trucks in Australia the 1950s and 1960s, which hauled proper road trains of around 3 or 4 trailers. They, and the 8 wheel Foden body trucks were the big rigs of the day until the B61 Mack’s started to make inroads in the 1960s. The American derived trucks, with their greater horsepower and hauling ability led to the phasing out of the British models. Idiosyncratic British trucks needed a lot of expertise to keep on the road, and the American trucks proved to be more simpler and more reliable. There is a book called ‘Road Trains of Australia’ which is well worth reading.
