A small technical issue. There is something wrong with audio/video synchronization when you talk. It's quite prominent in the segment around 15:0 mark. The desync is very small, but I think that audio is coming ahead of the video. This makes it more noticeable. Since the speed of sound is relatively low, our brains are less sensitive when the audio is lagging behind video. Well, maybe I'm wrong...

When I watched the Netflix doc I said every few seconds, "yeah, I already knew that." Yours was still better. The Netflix one didn't even have anyone in costume!

I figured if I butter him up enough, he'll eventually show me his Bob Ross tribute painting. Not that he doesn't deserve the accolades. He's amazing in his chosen medium. But I wanna see his "collage" work. I want to see the other things that his mind holds dear... Look, Scott is bae and I'd take a bullet for him. 😂

A few years ago I was lucky enough to get to see an exhibition of Kirby's art at Cal State University Northridge and as incredible as his drawn pages were, the collages were stunning. Forget hi res scans, seeing them in person truly puts them on another level.

My late wife, prior to her death from cancer, did a great number of collages. The sheer output was impressive, and its own kind of artistic statement.

I’ll take your videos over Netflix everyday Scott! Thanks for showing me a phase of my fave comic artist I’ve never knew before ☺️ Man not even halfway but I’m just so angry with Marvel and Stan Lee! Like this is not exclusive to them but artists’ not getting their due either in recognition or compensation makes my blood boil, no wonder Kirby left, he most definitely deserved better!

I haven't done collages since middle School, but this video (and Kirby's great art) inspired me to do some again.

That final collage was genuinely breathtaking. Fantastic work, let alone for a first try.

The amount of work, time and passion that you put into your work makes you an artist my friend, own it

One of my most vivid memories of my childhood is reading Fantastic Four, and turning the page to see one of these incredible artworks (I use the word very deliberately). The FF in deep space, part photograph, part traditional Kirby comicbook pencil work. It was as though the characters had crossed into the "real world", it's hard to explain how a 10 year old me felt, but I was so excited by this. Stan and Jack expanded on this, calling the Marvel comics "Pop Art", which I never really understood. Steve Ditko went in a slightly different direction, with psychedelic "other realms". The Doctor Strange movie did a fairly good job in recreating Ditko's almost trippy visions. Put me off ever trying drugs! 😇

It's definitely art, I subscribed to this channel when I was on a bit of a comic/superhero kick, and even though I don't consume as much comic related content these days I'm always excited to immediately watch whatever art this channel creates

Scott, the videos you make are always emotionally resonant and make me feel things beyond “that’s interesting.” Your dedication to the credit of artists and exploration of their visions is an art in itself, and you are an artist.

I really hoped the screaming human face would say "unionize", but you got me smiling anyway

Okay, that collage at the end? Genuinely really cool. I even said “that’s really cool” out loud while watching.

Yes! It has been an interesting paradigm shift for this genre over the last twenty years. From print to screen an entire generation was raised on these characters, their ‘content’ and ‘Intellectual Property’. “Nostalgia never goes out of fashion” -City Slickers

While he was the best at one thing at the time, drawing, the gentle respect you pay by helping all to understand his other intellectual artistic avenues sheds light on ideas and value for all artists whether drawing, painting, collages, or numerous other techniques. Sometimes in combining techniques even if challenging, leads to the marvelous world we have by creating something cherished and full of awe. Thanks for a very kind contribution. As an artist who draws and is more usually considered an artist, I say yes Scott, you ARE an artist and your videos are art. I love how much you put of yourself in your text and how open you are to expose your feelings in it. Really inspiring :)

i might have commented this before but i'll say it again: years ago when i discovered your work it was already good, but now it is fantastic

What you create is very much art Scott, and I love experiencing it all the time. Also your collage at the end was legit beautiful and one hundred percent convened the message you were going for, I would honestly hang something like that on my wall.

I'm such a huge Kirby fan that I've been working with a really great tattoo artist to do a Kirby-inspired sci-fi sleeve for my entire right arm. We've actually gone through a lot of the traditional inspiration and have been looking for some different options for the fills and a few open spots. I think we're going to have to talk about Collage Art and Fumetti elements in some smaller areas. Thanks so much for this deep and unique insight into Kirby and his lesser paid attention to work!

This was fascinating. I first became acquainted with Kirby when he started at DC in 1970; these comics had quite an influence on my imagination. And I loved the collage you did; don't stop.

Thank you for being so passionate about his work. The King's artwork changed my life since i first saw his art when i was 4. Im sure Jack would be very proud of what you said & made.

I loved these pictures. The issue of the Fantastic Four allying with Namor to battle Attuma was a classic, in my opinion.

I loved the collages in Fantastic 4 as a kid. Then again I was the kind of kid who fell in love with hip hop for the creative sampling. The concept of making art by recontextualization was always very beautiful to me.

I always love your content, but this final collage you made/revealed is absolutely amazing! Thanks for shining a light on this part of Kirby's life

Collage to me means Monty Python Segues. That being said I saw one of these in a comic book reader app and it gave me pause. I had to take a screen capture as I'd never seen anything like this on the page before.

I love the art of collages and i’ve never know someone (especially kirby) used them in comics! In contrast to people who dislike the style, i’m imensly interested now. Thanks for making such a great video about it!!

I'll be honest, this was a fascinating look into collages and through the lens of Jack Kirby understanding what can work and not so work in comics but in art in general. I wish I had this video a few years ago in college when I was taking a digital arts class which used alot of collaging though Photoshop, and I used to be constantly stunted on what to use and why to use it.

First reaction on seeing the title: “Yeah, well, we ALL draw some crazy stuff in college.” Second reaction after starting video: “Oh.”

I had never seen Kirby's collage art but it is now some of my favorite art I've ever seen by him (which is really saying something because this is frickin' Jack Kirby we're talking about). Your collage at the end of the video was also awesome and really ended the video on a powerful note in my opinion!

I believe the reason the videos on Scooby-doo do so well is the amount of passion they bring you. You have a lot of fun and that is infectious. Leave your bothers behind the camera and your passion will propel you.

Amazing video, Scott, and happy birthday! As someone who loves, in the purest sense of the word, writing, philosophy, theatre, and many other things that people would tell me to just not bother with, this feeling that you captured perfectly with your art was amazing, thank you.

Since I was a kid, I've always loved his collages. It seemed a bold move from him in his medium - comics. Adorable, simply adorable. That's what authentic artists do: they try new ideas and approaches in their work.

I think what I love most about these pieces is that in comparison to his regular pencil art, there's often this stark, cold eeriness in Kirby's collages. They're often unsettling and invoke feelings of discomfort and uneasiness - I can imagine if I were to see them as a young child that some sort of primal fear would instinctually kick in due to the juxtaposition with the safe, familiar space of Kirby's art and I would want to glue the pages together so as not see them again. But they're so fascinating to examine as an adult and to look at what Kirby was trying to accomplish and push as an artist in the comics medium. Thank you very much for devoting a video to this topic!

I really appreciate what you have created in your collage. For the better part of 50 years, maybe even a little more, so much media was consumed through television, but the number of creators and the stories able to be told has exploded away from what standard television could once give with the advent of the Internet and places like KZread. Imagine the things people of the mid 20th Century would be interested in today that was not on television at that time. However, we also have spent 50+ years just staring at boxes, and while so much of what we view is now outside the box, they also find new boxes to inhabit and we still sit and look at them. There's chaos in the boxes that try to grab our attention, and we forget to go forth and create works with our imagination that have no need for the boxes and are more active, interactive, and tactile, or even just personal and something not needing to be broadcast to the masses. We could do more to go out and create and experiment rather than consume. You've made a very compelling piece, Scott. It's a true work of art, and you are indeed an artist.

Damn, my heart felt that... Another good analysis for you, Scott. Jack Kirby is always ahead of his time. Long live "The King"!!! And also, I would totally pick your video always over documentaries on Netflix. They don't have Scooby-Doo sneak in their scenes...

Yes, Scott, Yes, You Are. I took over a decade of being a Professional Artist to accept myself as an Artist to even use the "A" Word. And We Artists in this world of Creative Commerce are actually often Trapped between "vision" and being "productive" we are often not sure to call us artidsts, and put us even in proximity to our heroes. But to many, WE ARE THERE. And to me the Less is more approach - that KZread seems to hate - but that leads to awesome Essays like this one... I am grateful you went there, to elevate the kind of Entertainment and Infotainmain you create, from "Content" to "Art" So Yes. You are an Artist. And Do not dare to doubt it ;)

wow I'm not into marvel/dc comics and also not into collages. But seening Jack Kirbis collages really impressed me, I didnt know you could do such vivid images with collages and I think I should rethink this art form.

absolutely love the videos and how good the quality has been recently. been watching for years and seeing your art evolve from fun couple minute stories about a weird comic to absolutely amazing video essays that delve deeper then ever before into your favorite pieces of media is absolutely beautiful. i cannot wait to see how it evolves further (although i am very glad that i will have to wait anyways for such amazing videos). and im glad your accepting your videos as being art rather then just content (even if they were never content in the first place, no content, only context). also the collage art was beautiful and i really hope you have the wallspace to keep it somewhere

I feel like that issue of Fantastic Four made me a fan of Fantastic Four. It truly was something I had not seen in a comic before . It was something that I had never been able to put succinctly put into words before and this video really helped with that so thank you.
