This video is a remake of my old(er) colonialism video. This video does NOT seek to glorify, justify or advance colonialism or colonialist principles/worldviews. It is solely meant as historical documentation. Any hateful comments will be deleted. I also feel like I need to point something out about how to read the map If a nation simply claims a land, then it is shown in the palest color. If a country claims some land, those boundaries are recognized 'internationally' and it is treated as a province rather than a claim, but the native peoples do not recognize that claim/have not ceded that land/have not been subdued, then the region will be shown with colored borders. That means that the European nation in question considers that her land and that claim is recognized in a strictly legal sense, but is not actually colonized (or, in the case of Canada and the US, ceded). The reason this is important is because we often treat tribal lands as completely occupied, rather than simply claimed.

You should have shown the USSR as a colonial empire - the different parts definitely did not want to be part of that evil shithole of a country.

Great work, thanks for uploading this. However the video tells the history of European colonialism between the 15th and 20th centuries, not the history of colonialism since the dawn of times. Colonizations happened long before the Renaissance in Europe. I would recommend to change the title as it is slightly missleading (something such as 'History of European Colonial Empires').

First of all, thank you for the feedback! Second of all, I did not forget about those, I chose not to represent them. Sure, colonies existed in many places and technically they would fit as 'colonial empires'(as in empires whose most territory is made up of colonies). Look past the technicalities and labels and you'll realize that Athenian colonies in Ionia were very different from New Spain. Colonial empires specifically are a thing associated with the modern era. Ancient colonies were a totally different breed from modern colonies. ColonialISM is a tricky term to define(and could be understood as an ideology which the ancient era did not have) and there are debates about where to draw the line. However, everyone can agree that European overseas empires between 1500-1945 were colonial first and foremost. I feel like including ancient colonies would obfuscate the larger point, which is representing the expansion of colonial empires as understood in the modern era. Equating ancient empires to modern ones would also paint a dishonest picture.

I know the maker probably isn't implying this but the common wealth of nations isn't comparable to the French Afrique. The French Afrique is basically France's network of vassal states while the common wealth is basically Britain creating a smaller UN. Countries don't join the French Afrique willingly while countries like rwanda have joint the common wealth of nations of their own accord.

Completely true. The label is simply 'colonial legacy'. It simply talks about institutions that were born from a colonial structure. What you're saying is true, the Commonwealth is indeed way more democratic than the French Afrique

This video shows the progression of colonialism as understood in the modern era. I am not too sure what you mean. Japan was included and it is part of East Asia. The Arab world was more similar to the colonized rather than the colonizers. The only Arab country which would come close to a colonizing power was the Ottoman Empire. But the Ottomans did not engage in colonialism in the way we understand it

  • @mintviper5213

@animalpolitic6925 Oman had colonies in Africa (Zanzibar etc), research the Yarubid dynasty. You could indeed interpret Ottoman possessions outside of Anatolia as colonies, although the Ottoman empire is a Turkic country not Arab. Outside of the 1400's start date you could view the Arab expansions of the 600-700s as a colonial expansion with a lasting arabization effort. Also the ancient world was rife with colonialism but they are not directly comparable to the early modern colonial empires.

@@mintviper5213 I do agree with your point about the ancient world, as I explained in another reply. However, if you stretch a definition far enough, you could make it say anything. If you interpret things in a certain way, you can argue that Alexander's empire, New Kingdom of Egypt, Holy Roman Empire, Kingdom of Hungary, Barbarian Kingdoms and post-independence Brazil were all colonial empires. Ethnocentrism is a feature of all empires(sometimes just for practical reasons, as cynical as that sounds). The Ottoman Empire ruled over many peoples and had a Turkic elite, but this does not mean colonialism automatically. Similarly, maritime empires are not necessarily always colonial. I am not sure if Oman counts as a colonial state. I might be wrong, but to me it seems more like a feudal society(for the lack of a better term), Omani Zanzibar being a vassal state. The same reason for which I did not include ancient empires(I explained it in more detail in another reply) applies here.
