History of Christianity/First Century/
A local movement around a self-styled teacher Jesus turned into an empire-wide phenomenon in the first century. Born out of Jewish communities, it shared their belief in one God and practices such as prayer, fasting, sabbath, alms-giving, and hymn-singing. Jesus' movement also shared the Jewish scriptures.
The followers of Jesus differed from their contemporary Jewish neighbors in three respects: first, they believed that the crucified Christ rose again on the third day and that he is the lord of all; second, considering Jesus as the Son of God, they understood God as one but in three persons.
With the debate about who could the heirs of God’s covenant with Abraham and Moses at Jerusalem Council in 45 AD and the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, this movement altered significantly in many ways: 1. A rural community became an urban phenomenon; 2. With the scattering of the Jews and the missionary outreach of the apostles, the Jesus movement reached the ends of the Roman Empire; 3. After the destruction of Jerusalem, there were multiple centers of faith; 4. People of many ethnic backgrounds joined the community; 5. Those in the movement gathered in houses to worship; 6. All languages were considered sacred through which the divine communicates: 7. People of all genders-women, men, and eunuchs-led the church through preaching, service, teaching, and caring for others.
Countercultural to the imperial values, the Jesus movement emphasized the values of love, solidarity, sharing of assets, and equality.

When asked to recommend books, I usually prefer Justo Gonzalez’s books 📚 and the seven volume People’s History of Christianity series. Of course, my rendering of the history is slightly different from theirs. I highly respect these two

Thank you Sir for this class, it clearly ruled out many doubts regarding faith, language, Physical churches and so on...How about martyrs in 1st century in Church history? Did it happen in this period? Wanted to know about it
@JamesTanetiPhD

Yes, in deed! The second half of the first century witnessed scattered persecutions and more organised in the second century. In the broader sense, Jews, Christians, and those who refused to worship Romans risked and lost their lives. The Book of Revelation speaks of the martyrdoms at the end of the century. In my lectures, I have been focusing on issues either not talked about or grossly misunderstood. Thanks for watching and asking this question
