History of Astrology (ASMR relaxing story and sleep aid for bedtime)

In this soft spoken ASMR bedtime story, I tell you about the History of Astrology: how it appeared as a discipline that was not formally separated from Astronomy across different cultures (Babylon, China, India, Egypt, Greece, the Islamic World, the Maya...), and how it evolved. Western Astrology with its zodiac signs, birth charts, horoscopes and individualized predictions is a tradition that began to form more than 2,000 years ago in the Eastern Mediterranean. Even though critiques to the practice are probably as ancient as Astrology itself (some Roman authors, Muslim scholars and various religious traditions were vocal about their rejection of it), Astrology survived its separation from Astronomy and even thrived in the West since the 20th Century.

An acquaintance of mine is a believer in astrology. In a stroke of irony, she named her son Sagan because she thinks Carl Sagan was an astrologer. For real. As it turns out, her son has high-functioning Asperger’s and is studying Theoretical Physics at university. More than once, he’s thanked her for being a lovable idiot and setting him on a path to actual science. 😊

Lovely historical synopsis. Some things are not subject to the mechanistic confines of scientific proof but rather anecdotal experience, like that of the existence of soul...cannot explain why it works but it offers a roadmap to navigate this journey...one that is deeply complex and always unfolding...for those willing to learn the deeper wisdom and observe....I got into it about 15 years ago for fun and curiosity.....wasn't yet convinced....over the years it has demonstrated it's relevance and reality to me and I find it a necessary tool...perhaps why it has survived for thousands of years. Everything is frequency based, the Earth has it's Schumann Resonance, the planets and stars no doubt have theirs, and we interact with them via our consciousness and quantum entanglements with the light...which is all science...matter is composed of atomic structures which are geometric relationships with positive and negative charges swirling about...planets are forming geometric dynamics and generating harmonic patterns in relationship to Earth and eachother....Venus in particular forms a very beautiful geometric structure....so it's all math...which is all music...which is all frequency...which is all we are and all life is....a miraculous mystery :D

This was really interesting, thoughtful, and well researched. As someone who's always enjoyed playing around with the profile/identity aspect of astrology but found the horoscope aspect silly, it's so cool to hear the full history of astrology as a "science" and see that the prediction part is what was historically most popular! I think the modern resurgence has a lot to do with people's interest in knowing themselves and aligning with identities, like personality tests and pop psychology, as well as finding vaguely spiritual authorities outside of an explicitly religious setting. I've always known astrology must be silly/not real, even if the profile stuff does feel really accurate sometimes, and seeing how it's based on an outdated understanding of astronomy and the cosmos is really fascinating. Thanks also for including non-European astrology!
