American state borders are more square
At 2:32; this was front page news when it happened. I do not remember the story very well, but I do remember it. It may have been the inspiration for an episode of "The Six Million Dollar Man"-- "The Last Kamikaze". At 4:12; the horrible aspect of crucifixion is that hanging from outstretched arms makes it impossible to breathe. The only way to take a breath is to support the weight of the body on the nails through the feet. Eventually, fatigue, lack of food or water, or lack of sleep, robs the victim of the strength needed to support their weight on their feet, so they slump, suffocate and die. A victim might suffer for a few days, before collapsing and dying. The Jews were an easily offended group, prone to riots, so the Romans were careful to not trample on the religious taboos of the Jews. One of the things that the Romans had learned not to do was carry out executions on the Sabbath. This meant that anyone crucified on the day before the Sabbath (Friday, in today's parlance) had to be dead by sunset. Before the Sun began to set, the soldiers would break the legs of the condemned, so they could not support their weight, ensuring their death in minutes. In the accounts of Jesus' crucifixion, we are told that Jesus had not been seen to move for about three hours, making him obviously dead. Lancing his side with a spear and seeing a mixture of pleural fluid and clotted blood (what the Gospel describes as 'a mixture of blood and water') satisfied the soldiers that Jesus had already been dead for some time, so they did not bother to break his legs. A 6:04; indentured servitude is not, legally speaking, slavery. The indentured servants were not chattel. Their labor was contracted for a specific term and when that term was over, they were under no further obligation to their employer. While indentured servitude had many aspects of slavery, it was specifically set up to be legally distinct from slavery. At 7:22; the first use of poison gas was an epic failure. It was a kind of tear gas, a liquid really, that had to be aerosolized that was first used in winter. In the cold, the bursting charge failed to break up the chemical into small enough droplets, so you basically had small puddles that would cause a nasty stinging sensation if you tried to wash your face with it. Why did the Germans experiment with chemical warfare? For the same reason that WWI very nearly did end by Christmas-- a critical shortage of high explosives. Chemical weapon fillers for artillery shells extended the supplies of high explosives. Sadly, the Haber-Bosch process allowed Germany to produce the necessary feedstock chemicals for high explosive production, despite being cut off from the vast reserves of nitrates from South America, so the Great War continued for another four years. At 9:50; this is the difference between plug bayonets and socket bayonets. The plug bayonet fit into the muzzle of the gun, turning it into a spear, but the plug bayonet blocked the muzzle, so you could not load and fire the gun, while the plug bayonet was mounted. Socket bayonets fit around the muzzle, so the gun could still be loaded and fired while the bayonet was mounted. At 11:28; strictly speaking, it only counts as 'dropping the sun' if it is a fusion weapon.
