History and Culture of San Andres and Providencia, Colombia's Caribbean

It's a great pleasure to have a true expert in their field on the Colombia Calling podcast and discussing one of the lesser known cultures in Colombia, that of the Raizal people of San Andres and Providencia.
To most Colombians these Caribbean islands represent only a vacation escape but the truth is that there is so much more. Sharika D. Crawford is associate professor of history at the United States Naval Academy and she joins us to talk about her extensive research on slave routes to the Caribbean from Africa, the culture and society of San Andres and Providencia and the issues facing these islands.
We also discuss her book: The Last Turtlemen of the Caribbean. Crawford describes the colonial Caribbean as an Atlantic commons where all could compete to control the region’s diverse peoples, lands, and waters and exploit the region’s raw materials.
Focusing on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Crawford traces and connects the expansion and decline of turtle hunting to matters of race, labor, political and economic change, and the natural environment. Like the turtles they chased, the boundary-flouting laborers exposed the limits of states’ sovereignty for a time but ultimately they lost their livelihoods, having played a significant role in legislation delimiting maritime boundaries. Still, former turtlemen have found their deep knowledge valued today in efforts to protect sea turtles and recover the region’s ecological sustainability.

I can say she has seen the real changes. We are beyond populated and our culture is being more more and more sh*t on by the government and making the island more colombianismo. Colombia has been sh*thing more on the advantages of having an English speaking population. The corruption is beyond and we are in an disadvantage. Love the podcast and love the fact that you guys had this conversation. I wish you could add more to one of our leaders with the author

San Andrés sounds like Puerto Rico but with the language and culture reversed. San Andrès should get their independence from Colombian colonialism.

As someone from the former Mosquito Coast, I strongly believe that San Andres should be part of the Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region in Nicaragua.

@@ColombiaCalling of course it could because it's rightfully ours, but there is a manipulation of the central government over the regional government in Nicaragua, therefore many lands, natural resources and other decisions making are not fully controlled by the autonomous region government. The same way the San Andres and Providence people feels isolated from Colombia is the same way many people of the Mosquito Coast feels isolated from Nicaragua and Honduras. But I do believe that someday it will happen.

They are still Colombians. Some countries and cultures have this thing about dividing and creating chaos… It will be nice to see Latin Americans more United but is never gonna happen. This world is a fallen imperfect world
