I don't know why Henry the 8th thought Anne of Cleves was ugly. I think she has the sweetest face and such a kind-looking smile. However, maybe Henry's aversion was a good thing, as she was one of the few wives to survive.

Henry was insulted when Ann, not knowing it was Henry she was meeting for the first time, appeared repulsed by the overweight, aging king. His wounded pride and overdeveloped ego countered by telling all that Ann was ugly. He was a man-child.

Though after their divorce, Henry and Ann became such close friends up to his death, he would often confide with her about important state matters since he found she shares his same likes and habits and is his intellectual equal.

I think Anne of Cleves was Henry’s prettiest wife. I think he divorced her out of humiliation that he couldn’t “perform”. It couldn’t possibly be his fault, so he blamed her and said she was too ugly. She ended up being the luckiest out of all the wives though, so maybe it was worth being called ugly in the end.

No wonder Henry risked his kingdom, had to create a new Religion in England to marry her, and was ex-communicated from Rome by the Pope. They also had no processed food and sugar. So actually, this whole "bad teeth in the past" is a myth. The whole trope of the past not being hygenic is simply a myth that uneducated people like to peddle.
