When the first church was built in place of today's parish church, is not known exactly. It is believed that it was built between the 8th century and the year 820. A pastor was first mentioned in documents in 1182.
The tower and the eastern wall of the nave date from the late 12th and early 13th century, the choir was built in 1386.
The last major reconstruction began at the end of the 14th century and was completed according to the inscription on the west portal "Anno 1486" in its final form of a three-aisled pillared basilica. In this course, the church was gothicised.
From 1684 to 1687 the church was baroqueized. After a lightning strike in 1739, the spire was replaced by a bulbous dome.
In November 1862, neo-gothic choir windows by Ludwig Mittermaier were installed. These are unfortunately missing today.
From 1898 to 1901 the church was regothicised with a neo-Gothic decor.
The interior is dominated by the late-historic murals by Gebhard Fugel. Further paintings were removed in 1952.
