Historic train exhibit at the New York State Fairgrounds | April 9, 2024

An unfortunate traffic jam on the way home from the solar eclipse turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I spent the night in the Syracuse area, then ventured out to the New York State Fairgrounds the next morning.
The Central New York Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society (cnynrhs.org/web/) maintains the Historic Train Display at the fairgrounds. On display are two locomotives, three coaches, two combine cars, and two cabooses.
The star of the show is Amtrak GG1 #926, formerly Pennsylvania Railroad #4933. I have a goal of seeing every surviving GG1, and this road trip gave me the chance to check this one off my list.
Join me as I check out that GG1 and all of the other restored and preserved units on display. I even caught two freight trains on the CSX mainline while I was there! I'll show a preview of one in this video, but the full clips of both will be in my upcoming April Railfanning Roundup video.

The GG1's also ran to Potomac Yard in Virginia, as well as from Harrisburg to Perryville, Md. 4926 never wore Tuscan in her PRR days, all were delivered in DGLE ( Brunswick Green).

Thanks so much Kevin! I actually caught two trains out there; both will be in my April recap video. Glad you enjoyed that D&H car too. It was nice for me to explore and railfan some different stuff. I'd travel more often if gas wasn't so darned expensive!

It's definitely neat to see in person if you're in the area. It's gated off most the time, but I asked the guard at Gate 2 if I could go back and he said yes.

Hello Jamie! Road trip! I know you love the GG1's! I haven't been to Syracuse in about 40 years. Good times Jamie! "From 1839 on, Syracuse life for many years revolved around Vanderbilt Square, the magnet was the railroad station, and the hostelries that grew up around it. In the old station Henry Clay was welcomed on his visit to the New York State Fair in 1849. Daniel Webster, General Winfield Scott, Louis Kossuth, John Brown, Stephen A. Douglas, and other notables were greeted there."

Hey there Dennis! So glad you enjoyed my road trip. I needed it more than I realized, and I know you get how a change of scenery can do wonders for us. That's some very cool info you share, especially the mention of Henry Clay considering there's a little steam engine that once bore his name that will be the subject of two upcoming videos.

I was at the last run of the GG-1 Oct. 31, 1983 at Matawan NJ. I was working that day as a Signal Maintainer for NJ Transit. I still have the poster and a tee shirt, well the shirts now a dust rag. I got to ride on GG-1's in my 38 years with Penn Central, Conrail and NJ Transit. I once hitched a ride on old rivets the prototype G, that was in 1975. They ride like tanks, hard ride. Over 50 years of service, that never happens today.
